Dear Friends,

It has been our pleasure to serve our community together this year. It was most exciting to celebrate the 90th anniversary of United Way of Kenosha County with all of you.

Ninety years ago, Kenoshans gathered together to change the lives of the most vulnerable men, women and children in our community. This year, we not only celebrated the last 90 years, we looked into the future and began the work of the next 90 years: working to ensure our youth achieve academically and are positively engaged in the community; helping local families acquire and manage their assets to become more financially stable; and making sure that everyone in our community has access to resources to keep them healthy and safe.

As you will see in this report, we have accomplished a lot in the past year, but our work is just beginning. Too many children still need our help and support, and many families in our community are still experiencing poverty.

We are, however, optimistic and resolute that every individual and family has the opportunity to succeed. We know that this will require us to work collectively. United Way pledges to continue to work with our donors, volunteers, advocates, partner service providers, parents, policy makers, corporations, foundations, and community members to create better opportunities for us all.

Thank you for your support and commitment during the first 90 years. Please join us as we begin the next 90 years.

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS

GET CONNECTED

DAY OF CARING DAY OF ACTION

United Way of Kenosha County launched Get Connected in May 2013. Get Connected is an easy-to-use web-based platform that matches the right volunteers with the right opportunities.

The site allows any local organization (nonprofits, churches, schools, etc.) to create a profile and share ongoing and one-time volunteer opportunities, employment opportunities or in-kind needs.

In turn, volunteers create a profile that then links their time and interests with corresponding needs. Get Connected interfaces with many types of social media. There is truly no easier way to check out how you can make a difference in your community! Visit getconnected.kenoshaunitedway.org today!

Two hundred people made a big difference in Kenosha County. On September 21, 2013 United Way of Kenosha County partnered with Journey Church to host the eighth annual Day of Caring event.

Volunteers did everything from painting, weeding, mulching and garbage clean-up to baking healthy cookies at the Racine Kenosha Community Action Agency for WIC families and packing diaper bags for the Celebrating Healthy Babies event hosted by Kenosha Lifecourse Initiative for Healthy Families. A total of 23 project sites provided something for everyone.

Special thanks to our Day of Caring Sponsor!

Across the country, United Ways celebrate June 21, the longest day of the year, as Day of Action. This year, United Way of Kenosha County helped connect people in our community with Bare Necessities they need, including new socks, underwear, pajamas and undershirts.

The result?• 45 businesses across Kenosha County hosted

workplace collections.• Volunteers sorted the donations and • 3,500 items were distributed to • 15 local agencies that serve those in need!

In 2013, the fifth year of the program:• 175 local leaders volunteered their time to read • in 168 elementary classrooms • at 22 schools across Kenosha County,• reaching 4,200 students.

Achieving a 185 percent increase over 2012!!!

Through a volunteer-led review process, United Way of Kenosha County invests in education programs such as:

• Boys and Girls Club: Youth Empowerment• ELCA Outreach Center: ELCA Outreach Center Summer Camp• Girl Scouts of Wisconsin SE: Urban Outreach Initiatives• Kenosha Achievement Center: HANEN• Kenosha YMCA: Frank Neighborhood Project• Shalom Center: Emergency Family Shelter• Women and Children’s Horizons: Children’s Services

Kenosha County Youth As Resources (YAR) is a grant-giving program which funds youth-designed, youth-led community service projects in Kenosha County. Youth, with guidance from adults, determine the project they believe will address a need in their community. Youth groups may apply to Kenosha County YAR for grants of up to $500 which may be used to purchase supplies for the project, but may not be used to pay for volunteer time. The YAR Board reads all applications and invites youth groups to present their proposals directly to the board.

Kenosha County YAR was developed out of a need – a need to make the youth of Kenosha County feel more connected to their community. According to results from a 2010 Search Institute Survey of Kenosha County youth, only 27 percent feel that they are given useful roles in the community. An even lower 25 percent of youth feel that adults value them.

YAR is a program of United Way of Kenosha County in partnership with Kenosha County University of Wisconsin-Extension.

VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE (VITA) PROGRAM

In an effort to promote financial stability and asset building in our community, the Kenosha VITA Coalition (United Way of Kenosha County, the Kenosha County Job Center, Gateway Technical College and Carthage College) together with IRS-certified volunteers are providing free income tax preparation assistance to low-to-moderate-income families.

Program Goals:To help low-to-moderate-income families (up to $51,000) with tax preparation, taxpayers are assisted with receiving tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a commonly overlooked credit that may add more than a month’s worth of salary to the individual or family’s annual income. According to the IRS, 25 percent of taxpayers who qualify for the credit do not apply for it.

Therefore, a program goal is to provide financial literacy education to Kenosha County residents to promote self-sufficiency through wealth building and debt-reduction outreach programs for those outside the financial mainstream. Assets give people a stake in their future and in their community.

Find more information about VITA at www.kenoshaunitedway.org/VITA.

In the 2012Tax Season:

• 81 individuals participated as volunteers assisting in tax preparation

• 1,862 state and federal tax returns were filed

• More than $1.368 million in refunds were returned

In the past four years, the VITA Program has brought back $4,900,000 in refunds to Kenosha County!

HEALTH

FAMILY WELLNESS AND INFANT MORTALITY

Infant mortality is said to be a measure of the well-being of a community and a leading health indicator of the quality of life for its residents. Disparities in racial and ethnic birth outcomes between African American and Caucasian families in Wisconsin and throughout the nation can be attributed to multiple factors that transcend any one sector of society.

United Way of Kenosha County is proud to maintain partnership with the Kenosha Lifecourse Initiative for Healthy Families (KLIHF) to address the important issue of infant mortality in our community.

In 2013, United Way received grants from the Kenosha Community Foundation - Dr. Raymond Walsch Endowment approved by the Medical Society Fund, the Kenosha West Rotary Club, and Rotary Club District #6270 to host an event for the Kenosha Community. By partnering with Leadership Kenosha, the Oh Baby! Family Wellness Fair was held on Saturday, May 4, 2013.

PRESENTATIONSParticipants attended presentations relevant to family wellness topics, including: Active Early, Healthy Bites from Prevention Services Network, Safe Sleeping/SIDS Information and Prevention from Goodwill Industries and Car Seat Safety from the Kenosha County Division of Health.

Twenty-five attendees received vouchers for Pack N Play units and 15 received car seat vouchers to be redeemed at the Kenosha County Division of Health.
