We extend a special welcome to those who are crying new-borns, skinny as a rail or could afford to lose a few pounds. We welcome you if you can sing like Andrea Bocelli or like our pastor who can’t carry a note in a bucket. You’re welcome here if you’re “just browsing,” just woke up or just got out of jail. We don’t care if you’re more Catholic than the Pope, or haven’t been in church since little Joey’s Baptism. Or ever. We extend a special welcome to those who are over 60 but not grown up yet, and to teenagers who are growing up too fast. We welcome soccer moms, NASCAR dads, starving artists, tree-huggers, latte-sippers, vegetarians, junk-food eaters. We welcome those who are in recovery or still addicted. We welcome you if you’re having problems or you’re down in the dumps or if you don’t like “organized religion.” We’ve been there too. We endorse all people but we make it a point not to promote any particular politician. If you need a church that does or a minister who screams and yells from the pulpit about how everybody who doesn’t believe as he believes (or, she believes) is going to hell... well, you’re probably not going to like this church. Here, you can be Democrat, Republican, Independent... heck, even a Socialist. You’ll understand, we’re sort of struck with Jesus and, especially, his teachings. The way we figure it if we follow the only thing he commanded us to do (love each other), the world will be a happier and healthier place for everybody. Healthier and happier, too, for those not interested in religion, not even ours. If you blew all your offering money last night, tough luck for us. You’re still welcome here. We offer a special welcome to those who think the earth is flat, work too hard, don’t work, can’t spell, or because grandma is in town and wanted to go to church. We welcome those who are inked, pierced, both, or neither. We offer a special welcome to those who could use a prayer right now, had religion shoved down your throat as a kid or got lost in traffic and wound up here by mistake. We welcome tourists, seekers and doubters, tough-lovers, bleeding hearts ... In short, in Jesus’ name, we welcome you! You know, I think Highland Park is that kind of church. Parking Lot Ministries is on February 3rd at 7:45 am. We are collecting toothbrushes, toothpaste and soap during the month of January. For more info, please contact Kim Bonnoitt at 843-661-5346, [email protected].

Children’s Corner: It’s a new year, so it’s time to update current participation waivers. These were mailed out with January mailings and are also available on the bulletin board across from Mrs. Jeannette’s office. We must have these on file for your child to participate in church activities without a parent present. Your child’s safety is our top priority! InMotion Jr. will meet today, January 14th from 3:00-4:00PM in the Sanctuary. For more information about InMotion Jr., please contact Ms. Jennifer Price or Mrs. Jeannette Braswell. Our next Kidz Quest is today, January 14th from 4:00-6:00PM in the Fields Center. Thomas Coleman will be coming to do a magic show for us! We’ll also have a meal and time for fellowship and devotion. Our confirmands will be going on our White Oak Mountain retreat January 19-21. Please keep our 15 kids and 4 chaperones in your prayers for safe travels.

HPUMC Africa team has t-shirts for sale. Navy or grey for $15. There will be a table set up in the Narthex to place your order.

Women’s Ministries: Highland Park’s Women’s Ministry asks your help in refurbishing our supply of table cloths used for hosting events. A donation of $50 will provide a monogrammed table cloth with the name of an honored or memorialized individual stitched on the hem. Forms are located on the women’s ministry table. Highland Park Women Beth Moore Conference in Boone, NC on March 9th and 10th. The tickets will be $59 per person. If you’d like to go with a group from our church, you can get your check to Beth Behling or to Kathy Hutchinson in the church office by January 15th. Contact Beth Behling if you have any questions. Highland Park Women (and Friends) will study “Finding I AM.” Interested ladies will have 2 days offered a week, only needing to attend once a week. We will meet at 6:00 PM on Sunday evenings and Wednesday nights at 6:00 PM. If something comes up in your schedule you can choose the other meeting time. We will kick off this study January 14th, Sunday and January 17th, Wednesday with both meeting at the church. This is a six week study format and should last about an hour.

The 2018 Flower Calendar is up in the hallway across from the Children’s Ministry Office. The next available date is January 28th.

Compassion Experience: Thanks to all who helped with the Compassion Experience last weekend! Despite the terrible weather, we had 3,389 people go through the Experience. Including the children who were sponsored in our church, we had over 100 children sponsored around the world, which means 100 families stories are right now being changed in to stories of hope, love, and grace in Jesus’ name! There are a few sponsorship packets in the narthex if you did not get the chance to rescue a child last week. To God be the glory!
