Mitzi’s Kitty ChatKitty Corner

Two Special Cats Make a Great PairSir Thaddeus Triscuits III, aka Sir Lovesalot, aka Teddy, came to us at four months old with a hole the size of a quarter in his left upper thigh. Being the resourceful cat he is, he had learned to walk with his leg tucked under him, while using his long tail to help keep his balance. The doctors and sta at Kachina Animal Hospital immediately fell in love with him. Dr. Bellew came in on her day o to do the amputation and Dr. Bason requested naming rights in exchange for assisting with the surgery. Teddy came through with ying colors and then went to our Cat Coordinator’s house to recuperate. On the second day there, he bonded with JimBob, who you may remember from our last newsletter. JimBob’s skull had been fractured when he was a tiny kitten. Suzy and Sara, another volunteer, had designed and crocheted a custom helmet to protect his head while it healed. They did a great job too, sinceJimBob now has a callous on his skull cap that makes his head harder than most. (Although, if you remember the original story, JimBob was pretty hard-headed to begin with. The skull fracture was a result of him trying to steal a large dog’s dinner.)When Teddy arrived at Suzy’s house to recuperate, JimBob welcomed him with open arms. Neither of them had a very good kittenhood, so they instantly started playing, sleeping, eating and rough housing together. Where one was lacking in life skills, the other showed the way. JimBob taught Teddy thatdogs are OK, while Teddy encouraged JimBob to explore heights. Together, they made a great team and are now a bonded pair.Teddy has recovered from his surgery, but after using his right leg to compensate for the injury to his left leg for so much his young life, he now has arthritis in his right hip. He will need to start taking joint supplements when he turns a year old.Teddy and JimBob are both considered special needs cats; Teddy because of his arthritis and JimBobbecause of his poor vision. They are available foradoption to the right homes, but since they are so bonded, we are hoping that they can be adopted to a very special home together.

Dear Mitzi, My beloved kitty, Boots, is 9 years old and putting on weight. I want to help him slim down, but he loves his food and his snacks. When I cut back on them, he acts like he is starving. Help!Signed, At Wits End

Dear At Wits,You are right that Boots needs to lose weight. Excess weight is as bad for cats (and dogs) as it is for people. It is hard to cut back enough on food so that a kitty loses weight and remains good tempered. I recommend asking your veterinarian or pet store expert about a high quality low calorie food for Boots. You may have to try a couple to nd one Boots likes. You can also nd low calorie, nutritious snacks or make your own by boiling white chicken meat and cutting it into small cubes. I like that myself, and I am a sleek kitty.Mitzi, The Most Beautiful Calico on the Planet

Petco Helps Stock the Community Pet Food BankThanks to our generous donors and our hard-working volunteers, UAF’s Community Pet Food Bank distributes more than 2,500 pounds of dog food and 1,400 pounds of cat food to low income families each month. That’s a lot of food! And that’s why we are so grateful when local businesses call us and say “Hey, do you want some pet food?” So when Aimee, the manager of the Prescott Petco, said “Hey, do you want over $1,300 in pet food?” we said “We’ll beright over!”

Thank you, Petco, for yourconsistent generosity toUAF, from providing thespace for Kitty City to giving us a great location for weekend adoption events, and now for helping us provide nutritious food to hungry pets.

Dear Oni,My dog will not lie down when asked. I have given up. Help.Signed, A Downer

Dear Downer,I suspect that you are allowing Fido to get away without lying down, thus inadvertently rewarding him. Down can be a vulnerable request and it is important to always follow through. Be conscious not to nag. Simply say down, place a treat to your dog’s nose and once Fido is focused, lower it slowly straight down and then out, like an L shape. Once down, say YEAH! GOOD DOWN! You may wish to mold Fido into a down and then say YEAH! GOOD DOWN! If you are consistent and present yourself well, Fido will respond. Think about a good Positive Reinforcement Reward-Based training class.Sincerely, Oni (Contact Oni at [email protected].)

From Pitiful to Playful PupIn our cover story, we talked about transforming the lives of reservation dogs. Here’s just one example of why we go the extra mile to rescue dogs from an area with few resources.

At just 10 weeks old, Peanut was living in a New Mexico shelter when an accident broke three bones in his foot. When the shelter sent this sad photo and asked if we could take him, our answer was “How soon can we get him?”

He headed our way on the next transport and went to stay with one of our star fosters, Anita, who has devised an ingenious way of keeping splints on skinny puppy legs. When the veterinary clinic wraps the leg, she has them make two holes at the top, through which she attaches loops that hook to the dog’s harness.

Under Anita’s care, Peanut was soon able to lose the splint (on purpose this time), allowing himrun and play like the puppy he is. He has been transformed from a sad pound puppy to a loved member of his new forever family.
