Greeting Members! This is my first Presidential newsletter
message to you all and I want to say how happy I am to be
here!
There is so much I want to touch on in this small space, first
of all I want to Welcome all of our new members and I'm so
excited to see more Youth joining our Club! We even have a
couple of articles in this newsletter written by our Youth
members and I'm simply overjoyed to see that kind of
participation, hopefully this is just the beginning of a
beautiful thing for UARC.
If you are an Adult member who has children who show an interest in the rabbit fancy, we urge
you to have them apply for Youth membership or change your membership to a Family one.
They're never too young to start either. My youngest daughter has been a ARBA and NARBC
member since she was 3 years old! Remember, our youth are the future of our hobby and
definitely something to promote and protect!
The news of a Angora taking Best in Show at ARBA Convention this year was amazing and I
know we all say a big Congrats to Linda Casella on a job well done! Any Angora taking BIS at
that level is a win for all of us!! I know we have several members here on UARC who took their
Angoras to Convention and also did exceptional. I know everyone brought out their big guns and
I'm so proud of everyone!! You can all see the Convention results for yourselves here in this
newsletter! On another note in the same vein; I urge those of you who are planning to attend the
ARBA Convention 2013 in PA to book your hotel accommodations ASAP as these things can
and do fill up considerably in advance. Let the count-down begin!
I'm sure some of you have noticed that our new Secretary and Web mistress Melissa Deitrich has
been quite the busy bee in reorganizing our club matters including the daunting task of refreshing
our entire membership and now, editing our newsletter! She has quickly become a major asset to
our club and I know we are all extremely appreciative of her tireless efforts to make our club the
well-oiled machine that any successful club needs to be. I'm also thrilled that she seems to have
revived the Photo of the Month idea for our Club. Thank you so much for your time and effort
Melissa!
In closing, I hope everyone has a fabulous Holiday Season and New Year. Stay safe and have
fun! I personally wish for snow! This is to be only my second Ohio winter and I am a born and
raised New Englander. It was so mild last winter that some of our Annual plants and herbs kept
outdoors never died... I know my kids would love to play in the snow this year so I really hope
Jack Frost visits us! I'm also very excited over a couple of up-coming litters due mid-December
and I wish you all bountiful breeding as well! May our nest boxes over flow! Sincerely, Jenna
Leonard

The weather here in Delaware has been a little
unpredictable the last few months…rain, heat,
snow flurries and the Hurricane Sandy. I know the
big question we are all wondering is “What is the
coming winter going to be like?” With the great
weather extremes we have seen across the nation,
all we can really do is keep our fingers crossed and prepare. If anyone has any cold weather tips
feel free to share them on the UARC Yahoo Group. I’m happy to say we currently have 16
youth members in our club! The goal of our officers is to move this organization into a future
filled with exciting new amenities for our members some examples include the Angora of the
Month Photo Contest, Youth Corner, Youth Sweepstakes, updated website and breeder listings
just to name a few. We are also talking about the possibility of having a Youth Representative
for our club. If anyone has any changes that need to be made to their membership please let me
know ASAP. I like to keep things as current as possible. If you have any questions or concerns
please let me or another officer know. Something to think about as the new show season is upon
us…please think about Hosting a UARC Specialty Show in your neck of the woods. Many of us
like to travel great distances where we can show our angoras up to 3 and 4 times in a day.
On a different note I’m now an Official Rabbit Registrar! I’m currently working towards my
requirements for my Cavy Registrar license. I was just recently asked by Dr. Heriz to be the
Delaware State Rabbit Representative for District 9.

I was asked to write a short article about how I got started into the wonderful world of Angora
rabbits which has been a most rewarding adventure that I hope will continue for a long while.
I started into rabbits like most with my children in 4H and the ride began. I had no idea what an
Angora rabbit was nor that there were different varieties of them. We acquired our first “French
Angora” from a local breeder proceeded to our first ARBA show where we met our first judge
Cheryl Eng-Link in the spring of 2001. She was very informative and directed us to contact Joan
Hastings where I acquired my first two real French Angora's and since then things have been
very blessed. Many shows went by and I continued to learn and acquire stock but I was the new
kid on the block and had a lot of very good breeders in my area which really helped in getting me
started on the right foot.
After about three years, I had my first litter of what would be the start of everything and I was
never so excited when I won my first BOB with the late Kathy Patrick as the judge. Since then I
have had the support from the NY Angora family and I've had the honor and privilege to own
some extremely nice animals. I could not do this article justice without mentioning my SUSU
rabbit that really changed my Angora career, she had many wins including numerous BIS's and
both National and Convention BOB's.
I attended my first ARBA convention in Providence, R.I., and was amazed at the size and
number of animals there. Being my first convention, I made many rookie mistakes such as bring
far to many animals to the show. Our van was loaded with over 30 animals, some were Jersey
Woolies, all of our gear, two daughters and off we went. I learned a lot at that first convention
such as don't take so many animals and don't over pack! (As the late Judge Roger Cota would
say “Relax it's just a rabbit show”).
My first love is the French Angora's and they have given me numerous BOS's/BOB's and
Open/Specialty and National BIS's but not only that but the opportunity to meet to both old and
new breeders and I have developed many long lasting friendships.
I currently have the privilege of working with the group in developing the Broken Satin Angora
and will be ready for the first presentation at the 2014 ARBA Convention.
I look back at the miles driven in the late night through all the different weather conditions and
getting lost on roads not even on the map and numerous hours of lost sleep to do
GROOMING,GROOMING and more GROOMING, thinking would I be crazy enough to do this
again? I say “YES” Hope all is well and look forward to seeing you at the next show.

Welcome new members & winter greetings to all!
With Jack Frost gradually embracing many of our
rabbitries and barns in the upcoming months please
be ever mindful of the extra precautions necessary
to ensure your own safety as you endeavor to
protect & provide for your herd(s). “We” so often
are consumed with the “task/chore” at hand that
simple precaution for ourselves such as ensuring
clear or ice free paths to our animals is over-
looked. Remember a slip can result with you being laid up & relinquishing the care of the
animals to someone else that may not do the same job as you would do.
I eagerly look forward to meeting many more members at fiber fests/fairs & bun shows in the
upcoming months; may your buns be warm & your nest-boxes full. Respectfully with Blessings
to you; UARC BOD chair/member, Tina Vance

Being asked to be the club’s newsletter editor for both the
regular newsletter and the Fiber Edition Newsletter has been a
huge honor as well as undertaking. First off, I’d like to thank
my daughter Jessica for her expertise in helping me design this
newsletter. It always amazes me how quick the younger
generation picks up on things. At one time I thought I knew a
great deal about designing webpages for myself and others, but
I guess the older I get the more willing I am to accept help from
the younger ones! So with that said, if there is any mistakes in
either newsletter please forgive me. As I am typing this I am
surrounded by rabbits happily munching on hay and enjoying
the cool environment and so am I. With that said, I can’t wait to start gathering material for the
next newsletter. I’m counting on all of you to submit articles and or photos for the next
newsletter (All information will need to be submitted no later than February 28, 2013 for the
Spring Newsletter)! I can take articles and photos at any time for the 2013 Fiber Edition.

I bounded out of the nest box fiercely. “I want to be just like you mom,” I said. “I don’t think
so,” said mama. Then Lilly came over as well. “Yeah, we want to eat pellets and get stronger.”
“Well you girls aren’t old enough and besides you aren’t ready for pellets”. I sat alone until Sari
came over. She sat next to me and started talking but I wasn’t listening. I thought about what
mama said how we weren’t old enough for pellets. “We are two weeks old!” I cried. “We are old
enough for pellets. We eat everything else you give us.” Then mama came over and scolded me.
“Your sisters are trying to sleep and so is the whole rabbitry. So I suggest you apologize to
everyone and sleep in the corner tonight.” So I apologized and went to the timeout corner. One
more night like this and I was grounded. All my other sisters went to curl up next to mama while
I slept next to the few pieces of hay that were still in the timeout corner.
The next morning, I was jolted awake by the sound of a crying kit. I jumped right up and yelled,”
Lilly, Sari, Daisy; where are you?” Then I jumped over and realized mama was having another
kit! I went over to mama and said, “What is it?” “It’s a boy.” I felt as if my heart had skipped a
beat. It was hard enough being first-born. But this was truly dreadful. “It’s a boy,” I yelped. “His

name is Chai Latte”. I jumped away when mama asked who wanted to help feed him first. I
hoped she wouldn’t pick me to feed him. I remember when my sisters were born and how hard it
was to feed them. I’m sure boys are twice the trouble. Of course Sari went first. She always
wanted to be my little helper no matter what I was doing. My mama always said since I was the
oldest I had to be partial responsibility for everyone. I couldn’t wait to be weaned from all of
this. Mama was so proud of all the help Sari gave when she helped feed Chai Latte. Chai soon
fell fast asleep against mama’s belly. Then everyone snuggled up to mama except me. I guess
mama was still mad at me. I drank a few drops of water (from the water bottle) and went back to
the timeout corner.
Later that day, I was bouncing around when my cage flew open; a hand pinched my hindquarters
and dragged me out of the cage. I yelled for mama but it was too late. I was already outside. I
was so frantic so I started squealing hoping that some bunny will hear me. I was dropped on a
rug that’s on a wheelie trashcan. Then the humans tried to pose me up like a show bunny. Of
course! Today was picture day. I hated picture day. They expected you to sit still in your pose
while their machine with bright light on top went click, click, click. They must’ve taken a
thousand pictures of me because my neck hurt from keeping my head up. Eventually, I got back
to my mama’s pen. “It’s picture day” I told mama. She had gone through picture day many times
before. I always seem to forget that mama was a kit like me. She also took care of her sisters and
brother too. I wanted to be like my mom. She had nothing to worry about. A few minutes later
mama called me over to her. I asked her if anything was wrong but she said she just wanted to
talk. I sat down next to her. Then she started talking. “Rosa I don’t know why, but you have been
acting really strange since Chai Latte was born. But I think I have an answer to my own question.
I noticed that you’ve been acting the way I was when I was a first-born kit. I was restless and
pretended I was queen of the cage, until my sisters came along. They weren’t trouble, just a lot
of work! Then a few days later my one brother came along. That’s when I really started acting
like you. Not being involved in a sibling’s life isn’t’ fair to him. You haven’t even said “Hello”
to him yet. Your sisters are caring for him more than I am! I’m only going to ask you one
question. Are you jealous because I’m not spending time with you, like your other siblings?”
“Yes,” I said in an almost whisper. “Well don’t think that” my mother said “I will always love
and care for you no matter what.” I hopped away and looked at my new baby brother. He was a
pure, crisp black. I looked at him and said, “Welcome to the family.”

Hi, my name is Jarrett Keys. I
am a youth breeder and new to
English Angoras. I am a 4-H
member and have been the
President of my rabbit club for 2
years. I have been raising and
showing rabbits since 2009, my
first show rabbit being a light
grey Flemish Giant. I compete in
both ARBA and 4-H shows. My
current breeds are Lilacs,
Cinnamons, English Angoras,
Tans & Lionheads. I also have
been working with my Tans to
compete in Hopping. I have to admit I was intimidated by the Angoras. I have always admired
the English Angoras but thought that their grooming was too much for me. Then I started with
Lionheads earlier this year and realized I enjoyed grooming time and it wasn't as intense as I
thought. I then began researching what was needed for proper grooming and the amount of time
needed. I realized if you take a short time each week then the grooming time is very
limited. My Mom purchased a blower for me so I could properly groom my EAs. I contacted a
longtime breeder friend of mine to ask him if he had any EA's and our little jr REW doe was
transported back to Maryland, thanks to more great people. Then came my first show the
Baltimore & Howard, MD Show both youth and open. I was quite nervous entering my first
show with my EA. I had some help from some breeders I had met the previous weekend at
Carroll Co, MD Show and really tried to remember all that they had taught me. I even had help
grooming my REW jr doe and I'm so grateful for that help. I am so lucky to have found such
wonderful and helpful breeders within the EA group and I'm very grateful for your time, help
and knowledge. I was the only entry in the EA Youth show but in Open is where I really learned
a lot. There were 5 total whites shown in Open. I learned how the length of the wool is checked,
how the density is checked on the wool, what they meant by crimp in the wool, whether the
animal had any fur mites and how to check for them and many others. I learned that the first
coat is the best coat for showing. I now have 3 EAs and look forward to the showing season of

I stepped out of the van. Finally! I thought wearily to myself. Twenty two hours in the car with
fussy siblings and a van load of rabbits was almost more than I could bear. I stacked up a bunch
of rabbit cages on our cart and headed into the convention center. WOW! Was the first word
that came to mind? Rabbits, rabbits rabbits everywhere! Twenty one thousand rabbits packed
into one convention center!
Before I had a chance to really look around I had to go to practice for the youth competitions
that I was compete in tomorrow. For practice I got to follow a judge around the open room. I
saw many rabbits big and small, but I hadn't seen one fluffy bunny yet. My mom came up to me
later and said she couldn't find where they had put the Angoras. After practice I set out to find
my mom and where the Angoras coups were.
Following my friends directions I found both my mom and my Angoras. Both of my French
Angora bucks where sitting comfortably in their coups. I fed and watered them and headed off
to bed, anxious for tomorrow. After a goodnights sleep I was all ready to start my day. I spent
the morning competing in the youth competitions. It was a lot of fun. I got to hang out with my

friends and make some new friends from around the country.
The following day the show started. I cleaned my angora cages and gave them treats before I
begun grooming. The angora grooming room was filled with grooming tables, supplies, and
what seemed like hundreds of cords. It was below zero in the grooming room most of the time,
but unlike the owners, the rabbits didn't seem to mind the cold much. This was the one of the
first times my junior French Angora bucks had ever been exposed to a blower. Needless to say,
they weren't thrilled with me or my blower. They didn't seem to like being brushed either.
Once I finally finished grooming I realized the youth show didn't start for another hour or so. I
was NOT going to put my boys back in their cages to get themselves messy again. For almost a
whole hour I lugged around Sky, my blue French Angora buck and Dov, my Lilac Tortoiseshell
buck around the show hall. My arms and back began to ache after about an hour. I gave in and
put them back into their cages to wait for the
youth show to start.
After lunch time the youth show finally
started. I went to get my boys out of their
cages. I looked down at Sky. Good! He looks
pretty clean. I thought happily to myself.
Then I looked up at Dov. Not good! Dov was
cover head to foot with hay. Where he found
the hay, I have no idea. I quickly took him to
the grooming area to fix him up before show
time.
It was the moment that I had waited for. Show time! Both Dov and Sky placed well in their
class. The judge loved both juniors, but said they needed time to mature. I was so excited.
Kansas ARBA Convention was a lot of fun. I got to hang out with my friends and play with a
bunch of bunnies. I can't wait for convention this year. It will be held at the Farm Show
Complex in Harrisburg PA, which is only an hour a way for me and my family. It was a great
experience and I hope I see everyone this year at convention!

Consider Sponsoring a UARC Specialty Show in Your Area! Why not arrange for a UARC
Specialty Show in your area?
Our shows showcase and promote our beautiful Angora breeds, provide additional opportunities
to show our breeds at the host shows and additional opportunities to earn legs, and provide
income for our club that allows us to forego charging dues to our members.
The procedures for proposing a UARC show are straightforward: Contact any member of the
Board of Directors with your request, including the proposed show date, location, sanction fees
(other than ARBA and NARBC, which are standard) any other anticipated fees, entry fees,
proposed show Secretary and Superintendent. The BOD will vote on your proposal.
Upon approval, procure required sanctions, finalize arrangements with the host show, arrange for
any special awards and promote your show. Secretaries are reimbursed for approved costs, net
profits support the club. The club has a license for The Show Program (Grand Champion
Software) that makes this tool available to all UARC Show secretaries, and makes producing
show reports a breeze

I am very excited to see that the Angora Photo of the Month contest has as taken off with flying
colors. It was my hope when introducing the idea to the membership, that we would have more
