About Theatre for the Deaf

It was founded in 1967 and supported by government grants. First it was group and has developed into theatre. They have had over 10,000 performances world-wide.

When deaf theatre began, it was deaf people performing for deaf audiences today it is deaf and hearing together. It usually takes place two or three performances in a theatre season. The hearing people also may buy the tickets if they interested in seeing theatre interpreters at work.

Rehearse

Every actors in the play practice his or her lines for four weeks.

They have to learn the whole play. The workload increases 2

times because they also must practise the musicals rhythm and

harmonies. It is a very large project for the interpreters.

Location of the Interpreter

Placed style

Interpreters are located outside the acting space in a specific area of the theatre. They interpret the dialogue from this location and they practically don’t move.

Zoned style

Interpreters usually move during a change of scene or act.

Shadowed style

Interpreters move freely. This is the most inclusive style. Interpreters must follow the actors or actresses directly within the

action.
