Activity 1

Read the following text and answer the multiple choice questions by

circling the correct answer:

Adriana is a farmacist in Ploiesti, Romania and in her free time she enjoys

meeting her friends and spending the time chatting in a cafe or in a pub. She

considers that it’s very important to share with her close friends all her feelings

and thoughts. Sometimes she likes going to the theatre or visiting an art gallery

because art has always been her passion and from time to time she paints

landscapes from her country.

Ines is a lab technician from Tarragona, Catalonia and in her free time she

enjoys meeting her friends and going dancing together. Dance has always been

her hobby and therefore, she learned flamenco, salsa, tango, but also modern

dances from clubs. When she was a teenager, she took part in dancing

competinions and she won several prizes. She also likes reading books and her

favourite author is Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

Mustafa is an engineer from Istanbul and in his free time he enjoys meeting his

friends and chatting with them in a restaurant while drinking black Turkish tea or

coffee. Moreover, he likes swimming and he goes to the beach twice a month

Alessandro is a family doctor from Arezzo and in his free time he prefers

he enjoys the atmosphere and the songs people sing there during the football

Antonio dreams about visiting Istanbul because not only it is situated on 2

continents, but it also represents hundreds of years of history, culture, art and

religion. He wants to visit the Topkapi palace (from where the sultans ruled the

Ottoman Empire), the Blue Mosque (with the wonderful Arabic handwriting in

blue colour which covers the walls and ceiling) and Hagia Sofia (the church

turned into a mosque). His intention is also to take a Bosphorous tour and

admire the palaces built on the shore and the 2 imposing bridges which connect

Europe and Asia.

Ricardo saves money to organise a trip to Romania where he wants to visit

Valea Prahovei with its numerous mountain resorts. On top of his list there is

Peles castle with its amazing architecture and numerous detailed ornaments,

the summer residence of the Romanian kings. He also wants to visit Bran

castle, also known as Dracula’s castle, the place famous for the vampire who

lived there hundreds of years ago and inspired many horror stories.

Omer is going this summer to Barcelona, where he wants to visit Sagrada

Familia, the most wonderful cathedral in the world, and the other buildings

designed and constructed by Gaudi, along with the unique park he offered to

the community. He plans to walk in the pedestrian area in the historical centre

of the city and admire the old buildings, the narrow streets and the shops

displaying souvenirs. He also wants to go to the beach and spend time there

enjoying the sun, getting some suntan and swimming in the blue clear water.

Florin has some friends who live and work in Rome and he’s planning to visit

them and admire the beauties that made the eternal city famous all over the

world. He wants to walk through the ancient part of the city and see the Roman

Forum, the Pantheon, Trajan's Column and the Colosseum, places with so

much history. He also wants to make a wish at the Trevi Fountain and see if it

will ever turn into reality and also visit the Vatican City with the St. Peter’s

Basilica and Sistine Chapel, pilgrimage places of outstanding artistic beauty.
