II. Listening

Activity 1 Text audio: The Cathedral from Tarragonna is a Roman catholic church located in a site previously occupied by a Roman temple, a Visigothic cathedral and a Moorish mosque. During the works of restorations carried out around 2000, traces of a temple dedicated to the Roman emperor Augustus were found under the nave. The building is in a transitional style from the Romanesque to the Gothic one. The length of the main axle is 101 metres and the nave has a height of 26 metres at the dome. The windows have stained glasses and the tower-dome, which has an octagonal shape, was built in the 13th century. The Cathedral has 19 chapels built throughout the history containing numerous and valuable sculptures. The main gate has above a large rose window with a diameter of 11 metres. The capitals of the columns from the cloister are sculpted with religious scenes from the Genesis and the New Testament. The bell tower has a total height of 70 meters. Activity 2 Text audio: The Palace of the Parlament from Bucharest is the second largest administrative building in the world after the Pentagon in the United States. It was designed by a 28-year old lady architect and it was nearly completed by the Ceausescu regime as the seat of political and administrative power, through wiping out a large section of the historical centre of the city. The building houses today the Romanian Chamber of Deputies and Senate, the Constitutional Court, the Legislative council, the National Museum of Contemporary Art etc. The construction started in 1984 and its halls and galleries are generously decorated

with monumental sculptures, golden plaster, laced ceilings, brocharts, tapestries and heavy carpert. Divided into 21 parts, the building has 84 metres high (above point 0 of the ground floor), 275 m long, 235 m wide and 365,000 sqm. The style of the palace brings together elements of Romanian traditional architecture (where the Brancovenian style prevails), of Romanian folk ornamental art (such as the rosette, the symbol of the sun and typical woodcarvings), but also Renaissance, Germanic and Baroque influences. This architectural ensemble puts together not only impressive quantities of marble, steel, concrete and wood essences, but also a huge amount of work. Genuine Romanian materials have been used and one can say that the entire country has contributed with something to the construction and decoration of the halls. The Conference Centre opened inside the Palace of the Parliament has 10 huge halls with marble floors and columns and it can host different major international events, such as the 20th NATO summit which took place in 2008. Activity 3 Text audio: The Main Square from Arezzo is the heart of the town where, aside from the apse of the church, there are other important landmarks of the city: the Court House, the Episcopal palace and other palaces. Arezzo was one of the 12 most important Etruscan cities, which was built on Arno river and it was conquered by Romans in the 4th century BC. The Main Square is in the medieval part of the city and it was built in the 13th century as the main marketplace of the city. It is currently the site of the city festival called Joust of the Saracen which is held annualy and tourists come from many places to admire the locals dressed in medieval costumes taking part in tournaments. During the festival, "knights" on horseback representing different areas of the town charge at a wooden target attached to a carving of a Saracen king and score points according to accuracy. Virtually all the town's people dress up in medieval costume and enthusiastically cheer on the competitors. Arezzo has a starring role in Roberto Benigni's film Life Is Beautiful (La vita bella, 1997). It is the town in which the main
