Thematic Unit 1
Unit Rationale
My thematic unit is designed to teach an English language arts lesson, the language art lesson that I will teach with
my unit is a fact and opinion lesson. The title of my nit is Lets learn fact and opinion! Through my unit the students
will understand the definitions of the words fact and opinion, they will also be able to understand that authors write
informational books to provide facts about a topic. In addition, students will learn how to identify words and phrases
in stories or poems that suggest feelings or appeal to the senses. During my unit I will use a variety of activities and
materials to support the learning styles and strengths of all my students.
It is my philosophy that students should lean in engaging environments that provide many meaningful opportunities
for learning. It is also my belief that teachers should provide students with diverse activities that support different
learning styles, for this reason I have included activities that support the different learning styles of students.
To make this unit meaningful to my students, I will use a variety of activities, videos, books, poems, and an
engaging game. Every day of the unit the students will participate in a thirty minute minilesson, the teacher will use
videos, songs, books, and poems to teach the minilesson. After the minilesson the students will participate in a
fifteen minute independent practice or group activity, these independent practice and group activities are designed so
that student can practice the newly learned material. As part of the independent and group work activities the
students will use poems and books to identify fact and opinion statements, the students will also complete a
vocabulary foldable, writing activities and a fact and opinion sort.
At the end of the unit my students will be able to locate facts in an informational text and will be able to identify
words and phrases in stories or poems that suggest feelings or appeal to the senses.

Poem for day seven
The Little Plant
Emilie Poulsson
In my little garden bed
Rak'd so nicely over,
First the tiny seeds I sow,
Then with soft earth cover.
Shining down, the great round sun
Smiles upon it often;
Little raindrops, patt'ring down,
Help the seeds to soften.
Poem for day eight A Worm In My Pocket
Jodee Samano
One rainy day on my way home from school,
I found a big worm and thought it was cool.
I picked up the worm with my bare hand,
held it up high thinking how grand!
The worm was so cute and wiggled a lot,
I put him in my pocket to show Mom what I'd caught.
What will she say when I show her my find?
Will she let me keep it? I hope she won't mind.
Mom was in the kitchen when I showed her what I'd found.
She screamed, "No, way! Put it back in the ground!"
Now I'm so angry, she always says "No",
Luz Maria Fugon
Thematic Unit 27
If she won't let me keep it, then I will just go!
So me and my worm packed a sandwich or two,
ran out the door and down the street we both flew.
We walked to the park and sat on a bench,
I pulled out my worm and noticed a stench.
He looked kind of floppy, but wiggled a bit,
I thought, "Oh my Gosh, my worm is not fit!"
I laid him in the dirt and let him go free.
I guess that my pocket was not the best place to be.
