WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF
ABUSE?
SMALL GROUP ACTIVITY
You will be given a type of abuse ,as a
group think what this means and
produce a graffiti board with words
and/or pictures that explain the term and
give examples of the indicators.
A child may be physically hurt or injured.
Hitting, kicking, beaten with objects,
thrown, shook.
A vulnerable adult might be handled
roughly, pushed or hit.
Indicators: Broken bones, burns, bruises
or bites
- Fear of physical contact
- Depression
- Bald patches of hair
PHYSICAL ABUSE
A child may not be given love, approval or acceptance. This will make them feel upset and bad about themselves.
A vulnerable adult might have hurtful words said to them. They may be shouted at or threatened.
Indicators: Depression
- sleep or speech problems
- Aggressive behaviour
- Drug or alcohol misuse
- Delayed childhood development
EMOTIONAL ABUSE
Neglect is when a parent/carer does not provide a
persons basic emotional or physical needs.
When a child does not have proper food,
warmth, shelter, clothing, care and protection.
A vulnerable adult may feel neglected or lonely if
no one visits them. Ignores their needs such as
keeping them clean and giving them their
medicines.
Indicators: Bed sores
- unwashed clothes
- not being given prescribed medicines
- Poor diet/ constant hunger
NEGLECT
Is when a child is forced or persuaded into sexual acts or situations by others. Children may be encouraged to look at pornography, be harassed by sexual suggestions or comments, be touched sexually or forced to have sex.
A vulnerable adult may be forced into a sexual activity or made to look at sexual images.
Indicators: Urine infections
- sleep problems or nightmares
- A child has too much knowledge about sex
- bed wetting
