LESSON #3: THE OUTBREAK OF WAR

I. 28 June 1914: The Archduke Franz Ferdinand visits Sarajevo, Bosnia.

A. This is poorly planned for several reasons.1. Day of Serbian National celebration within Bosnia.2. Wedding Anniversary

B. A Serbian Nationalist “Group” (Terrorist Cell) has infiltrated into Bosnia and they are planning to assassinate the Archduke as striking a blow against Austrian Imperialism. They are called “The Black Hand.”

1. They all have a terminal illness and wish to die doing something for the cause of Serbia.

2. Gavrilo Princip, a nineteen year old tuberculosis patient, is among them.

LESSON #3: THE OUTBREAK OF WAR

I. 28 June 1914: The Archduke Franz Ferdinand visits Sarajevo, Bosnia.C. The Plan: Since they all know he is visiting and where he will be.

1. They each have a pistol, small bombs and poison capsules so they cannot be captured alive. 2. Each will stand along the route and attempt assassination as the Archduke goes by, and then

commit suicide. The assassins will remain anonymous.

D. As the cars move from the train station, the first assassin simply fails to draw his revolver and fire. He chickens out.E. The Second Assassin see the Archdukes’ wife in the car and decides against bombing them.F. The third Assassin throws his bomb runs across the road and throws himself into the river, biting down on his poison capsule as he jumps.

1. The bomb bounces off the Archdukes car and explodes under the car behind them, several people are wounded by it.

2. The cars continue on to City hall. The Mayor in the first car doesn’t even realize it has happened.

3. The Assassin miscalculates and is captured. The plot is uncovered within the next hour.

LESSON #3: THE OUTBREAK OF WAR

I. 28 June 1914: The Archduke Franz Ferdinand visits Sarajevo, Bosnia.G. At City Hall the Archduke gives his speech and yells at the Mayor, who is completely confused. H. The Archduke and Sophie move back to the cars to return to the train station. They will not stay in Sarajevo, too dangerous.I. On the way back the Archduke decides he wants to show his compassion by stopping to visit those who were injured by the bomb in the hospital, so they have to turn the car around. J. The driver attempts to turn the car around by backing into a side street and turning to go the other way.K. Gavrilo, who had been too nervous to fire as the Duke went past the first time, decided to quit and had turned and was walking away from the crowd when the Archdukes’ car pulled up and stopped in front of him.L. He drew his pistol and fired into the back seat of the car hitting both Franz and his wife.M. He bites down on his poison capsule and it fails to work. He is arrested.N. The Archduke and Sophie die before they get to the hospital.
