UNIT 9 PHOTOGRAPHY

Page 2: Unit 9 Evaluation

TASK OVERVIEW

• You can create your evaluation using Prezi, PowerPoint, word, a blog post, a pod cast, a vodcast, powtoon – it’s up to you!

• Your evaluation should be at least 600 words or approx 2 minutes long and include:

• Part One (Step by Step)

• How did you decided what area to do your exhibition on? (think about your research and practice photos)

• Where did you get inspiration from? (websites, photographers?)

• What equipment did you use to create your project (camera and settings etc)

• Did you edit any of your photos? If so how?

• Have you learnt any new skills or used any tools you haven’t before?

• Include pictures (step by step) to get a higher grade

• Part Two (Evaluation)

• What are the strengths and weaknesses of your photographs?

• Are you pleased with them?

• Has it turned out the way you planned?

• How you improved as a photographer?

• What would you change or do differently if you did this project again?

INTRODUCTION

• For Unit 9 the primary task was centred around Photography. We learnt about many

different interesting types of photography techniques. These were, Macro, Portrait,

Architectural and ABSTRACT.

• Out of all the possible camera techniques and brands to use, I decided that Abstract

Photography would be a thoroughly enjoyable yet challenging Photography type to tackle.

This evaluation will explain why I chose this bizarre type of photography and how I went about

doing it, I think, to a high level.

WHY I CHOSE ABSTRACT PHOTOGRAPHY

• I chose this type of photography because I loved the sheer randomness, enthralling

nature and purely bizarre subjects it focused on in every single image I saw. After taking

images containing all 4 possible options, Abstract stood out to me quite profoundly and I

found that it was the more gratifying type of photography to shoot.

• I found inspiration from my fellow students and images on the internet. One particular

image of a dried paint handprint on the school premises, was an image that had been

taken previously by a class mate and I liked it enough to take the same image but with my

own hands.

• While taking these images my philosophy was almost the stranger yet simpler the better.

A ball in a puddle, a flag waving, a lonesome red flower amongst greenery.

EQUIPMENT USED

• 1 CANON EOS 6D

• My Plan Camera Settings

• Black and White for 2 photographs

• Remaining 4 in colour

EDITED PHOTOGRAPHS

I edited this image

because I felt it was

slightly bland and too

simple for Abstract. The

initial un-edited

photograph was less

interesting to me without

a more bright and glaring

texture to the lighting.

Not much was done to

this except for altering

the lighting and

saturation which in my

opinion worked brilliantly

and fits Abstract well.

MORE EDITED PHOTOGRAPHS

These photographs were simply

given a Black and White face. I

did this to give not just a dark

look, but a darker tone altogether.

Being in black and white these

images help give the viewer a

sense of freedom to establish

their own opinion on the meaning

behind the image, which is a

theme that lingers throughout all

Abstract Photography.

ANY NEW SKILLS?

• In terms of knowledge on Photography, I have grown extensively. I have learnt to see

meaning in photographs whether they're apparent or not. Also delving deeper into an

image to pick out the tone, dark or light.

• Also skills on editing photographs. Primarily the saturation and lighting on my previously

evaluated ‘Handprint’ image. Here are both the original and final edited versions.

MY STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES

• STRENGTHS

• My reading of pictures meaning/tone

• Identifying alternatives

• Variety

• Editing

• WEAKNESSES

• Understanding fully the difference between Macro and Abstract

• Alternate angles

• Sticking to plan (in some ways)

Page 10: Unit 9 Evaluation

ARE YOU PLEASED WITH THEM?

• I am very pleased with my final photographs as I believe they exhibit Abstract

Photography soundly. Overall they are entertaining and follow the rule which all Abstract

images must inherit, being beautifully bizarre. One way to improve for next time would

be to exploit differing camera angles and types. For example more long shots, extreme

close ups etc etc. Also I didn’t precisely follow my picture plan but then again being

sporadic is an advantage as you cant always plan what you’ll see when shooting.

MY QUESTIONNAIRE FEEDBACK

• Overall my feedback was fair, justified and incredibly helpful for the post photography

stage. The overriding and general room for improvement answer was to exploit different

camera angles and take more time editing my images. I personally agree with both and as

a result will strive to make my future photography better with these targets in mind.

• The same with the positive side of the questionnaire, plenty of good feedback that taking

the images I believed were going well and that made my images more interesting and

certainly more Abstract.

FINALLY…. HAVE I IMPROVED AS A PHOTOGRAPHER?

• I strongly believe that I've made great progress throughout Unit 9 and have thoroughly

enjoyed it. My knowledge has increased as has my photography and editing skills as a

whole.
