A number of different methods are used. The three main methods are:

• This method involves cutting a piece of the stem with buds from the mother plant (this is called a cutting). The cutting is then placed in soil or water until it grows roots, resulting in a new plant.

Propagation using cuttings

1: A small part of the stem with buds is cut from the mother plant (a cutting).

2: The cutting is placed in soil and develops roots, forming a new plant.

• Grafts are shoots from one plant that are joined to the stem of another plant of a similar species.

• This technique is commonly used with fruit trees.

1: The stem of the plant that is going to receive the graft is split, and the stem from the donor plant is joined to this cut.

2: The cut heals and the new branch becomes part of the receptor plant.

Propagation using grafts

• This technique is used to make new plants from one of the mother plant’s branches. It involves bending a branch towards the ground until it is partially buried in the soil.

• Once the buried branch grows roots, it is detached from the mother plant, becoming a new plant.

2: When it grows roots, the new plant is separated from the mother plant.
