The Standard Occupations Classification

Page 3: Unit 4 research

In media , why might we group or classify audiences in this manner?

• So we know what target audience

we have to aim at for example

if we wanted to make a high end

magazine with would what types

of people would be looking at

it so it would be grade B and

near the top. This table shows

us the target market and the

categories of wealth.

How is audience research used in relation to new media products? (e.g. rating, BARB, focus groups, questionnaires)

• They will need to use barb,

focus groups and questionnaires

to make sure the magazine will

sell to the right people.

Having people comment on what

your new magazine is will help

to achieve sales.

Using the classifications table and the BARB website, what can you tell us about your chosen industry and your product from Unit 21?

• The chosen industry is magazine

editing and magazine page

layouts. The magazine industry

can vary throughout the

classification table from grade

A, to grade E. Depending on

what you do and who you aim you

magazine at can determine where

you are on the table from a-e.

What constraints, codes of practice, and or regulations does

your chosen industry/must your product follow?

• I have made sure that my

magazine is fit for purposed.

It has got nothing

inappropriate and the text has

no swearing or offensive

language. I also asked

permission to use photos of the

chosen models from her parents

as she is under 18.

Create an avatar of an ‘average audience member’ that your Unit 21 product is aimed at. Consider age, gender, clothing style, musical tastes

The outfit is

colourful and up to

date showing the

audience age for my

magazine. Also the

make up is age

appropriate. The

avatar looks young

so in my magazine

age range.

Look at your final product and list the ways you have aimed your product at your target audience. Consider content, genre, language

used, narrative, visual images, graphics, fonts, colours etc.

My magazine would fit in near

the middle, around grade c. My

magazine is not high end but its

not cheap so I would put it in

grade c because mine middle
