Unit 4:1.2 – Challenging Behaviors
in the Workplace
Overview We all face challenging issues from time to
time in life, but they’re different in the work place.
Overview They need to be approached with
professionalism and with regard to others.
Example #1: Being late (or repeated lateness)
This creates a problem because it shows a bad punctual attitude and will affect your reputation and future opportunities.
Example #1: Being late (or repeated lateness)
It shows the company that you’re not as committed to them as they thought you were and it looks very bad on your part.
Example #1: Being late (or repeated lateness)
In some companies, this lateness policy is extremely strict, and you can be dismissed if you are late even twice.
Example 2: Attitude toward others Having a bad attitude is a terrible thing to
have, especially towards co-workers.
Example 2: Attitude toward others If your attitude is very bad and it starts
affecting your work as well as others’ work, your position in the company may be put in jeopardy.
Example 2: Attitude toward others As well as this, people may start to think
differently about you, and let’s face it…it’s always good for people to like you, and to have friends.
Example #3: Out-of-work issues Sometimes people are affected by things
that happen outside of work.
Example #3: Out-of-work issues Allowing these issues to penetrate through
to your workflow (and attitude) can severely damage your work life.
Example #3: Out-of-work issues If your emotional problems become visible
to others, they may feel sympathy or empathy, but either way it is not who you are supposed to be at work.
This, again, can put your employment in jeopardy.
Example 4: Not completing tasks This is probably the most important part of
your job, isn’t it? Doing what you get paid for, what you’re supposed to be skilled at.
Example 4: Not completing tasks If you go to work, and leave work, without
completing tasks, what is the point of going into work in the first place?
Example 4: Not completing tasks This is the thing that, if comes most
obvious, is what will make you lose your job.
Summary These are few examples of challenging
behaviours in the workplaces. We have looked at some of these issues and how to avoid them.
These rules and ways of life in work may differ from industry to industry.
