Agenda

• How to build your K-N-D Chart to begin brainstorming ideas for your topic.

What do I Know about this issue, before researching?

What do I Need to look up in order to better make my argument?

What do I Do to get this information? (Research Plan)

Type ANYTHING you can think of, here, that you already know (or think you know) about the issue. It can be ideas that the opposition might use to argue their side, or ideas you have about arguments for this issue, any facts you know, or anything at all about this issue as a whole.

This is a good place to start asking questions. It’s a good place to start asking Who, What, When, Where, How, Why questions.

Who does it affect? Why is it happening?

You can even divide this into questions for each point in your “know” category.

This is where you’ll start thinking about how to get the information you Need to know. It’s a research plan, and not a solution list. You’ll do that below, in the third part of the assignment

2. Two of the biggest questions I have that might best be the focus of this paper: 1. (Insert one possible question that could guide this paper) 2. (Insert another possible question that could guide this paper)3. One possible solution: (Insert paragraph)

What do I Do to get this information? (Research Plan)

-We know that homelessness costs our society a lot of money-We know that there are inadequate facilitates to shelter the homeless most communities.-We know that the number of homeless families continues to increase each year.-We know that both Liberals and Conservatives, Democrats and Republicans have made efforts to address the situation of homelessness is American-We know that the economy, unemployment, and inflated housing costs are three contributors to the problem of homelessness in the United States.-We know that statistics are unreliable regarding the problem of homelessness.-We know that most members of our society agree that we are obligated to find ways to end homelessness in our country.

-We need more reliable statistics regarding homelessness.-We need to know more about the differences between chronic homelessness and those who are homeless due to temporary setbacks. Those addicted to drugs or alcohol need a completely different approach to the problem. -What percent of our homeless are drug addicted, mental ill, or physically disabled?-What resources are available, at both the state and federal levels, to homeless individuals and families. Is job training available? What are we doing to transition the homeless back into homes?-We need to know the most cost effective way to manage the problem of homelessness...shelters vs subsidized apartments for example.-We need to know what strategies have been most effective in solving the problem of homelessness in American.

I will search online for some programs, websites, organizations that exist to help fight homelessness.

I will research to see what government organizations exist to help the homeless.

I will call some local shelters to find out how they receive their funding.

-Research into the causes of homelessness is necessary before recommendations can be made.

-Find information on the real cost of a homeless individual.

-Interview the formally homeless and discussing with them the causes of their homelessness and their journey from homeless to home-owner could give us critical insight into the problem.

Start working on this NOW as you search for sources. When you find a source you like, build the citation, and write a little about what the source is about, and how you might use it. Paste in any quotes you think you’ll

use from it. I color code the quotes and the APA citation so I know what quotes came from which source, if I happen to

accidentally forget quotation marks or a parenthetical citation. If I have a blue sentence, for example, in my

paper, I know exactly who to cite by looking back at my working bibliography.

You will be submitting an assignment that takes this form, and contains 5 sources (all with the APA citation, paragraph explanation, and potential quotes you may

use)

Working Bibliography

Possible quote:“The fairy tales […] admit Life—that is, the fallen world—into their charmed circle, but they refashion and recreate it and never allow it to get the upper hand. They are an assertion of childlike purity” (Nassar, 1974, p. 35).

Source:Nassar, C. S. (1974). Into the demon universe: A literary exploration of Oscar Wilde. London: Yale UP.

This book discusses Wilde’s short stories and is a well known source among Wildeian scholars (my audience). I will use this book as a source of opposition. He opposes my argument (as will many of my readers), so it may help readers to see that I understand their perspectives. I will then refute his ideas by pointing out that rather, that the world is fallen precisely because it cannot understand, as Wilde has said, the highest form of love..

Nassar suggests, “The fairy tales […] admit Life—that is, the fallen world—into their charmed circle, but they refashion and recreate it and never allow it to get the upper hand. They are an assertion of childlike purity” he argues that the tales are centered on the perfect love (of Christ) in a fallen world (Nassar, 1974, p. 35).

I leave the quotes color coded so that when I put them into my paper, I know which source it came from, and can be sure I give

credit accurately.

In these stories, Wilde has de-centered the enforced binary, natural/unnatural love, by creating a free play between the terms/emotions, privileging what the church would call “unnatural,” and deprivileging the Church’s “natural” love; he accomplishes this by making the Church’s natural seem unnatural on the basis of its dependence upon the purpose of procreation. Christopher S. Nassar suggests, “The fairy tales […] admit Life—that is, the fallen world—into their charmed circle, but they refashion and recreate it and never allow it to get the upper hand. They are an assertion of childlike purity” he argues that the tales are centered on the perfect love (of Christ) in a fallen world (35). It is evident throughout Wilde’s stories that the world is fallen precisely because it cannot understand, as Wilde has said, the highest form of love. As seen in these stories, Wilde truly believes that the love that is perfected by death is the deepest and purest form of love.

How to determine if the sources are credible:

How do I know if it’s credible?

Evaluating Sources How do we know if the source is a QUALITY source?

Books published by university presses, and publishers of scholarly books, professional organizations are trustworthy.

Newspapers, general magazines and websites that do not carry a published affiliation are to be skeptically evaluated.

Websites ending in .edu, .org, .gov, .us, or .uk are usually reliable.

However, .com sites are to be carefully examined. Always check to see when the site was last updated.

How do we know if the author is an expert?

Check name in search engine. Check to see if they actually attended the school they are claiming as their affiliation.

Is the source current? If you run a search and you receive several hits, try limiting it by year.

• Quick note: this student is using “First,” “Second” “Third” for her current topic sentences for the main points. This marks her as a “novice” writer and we want to use stronger transitions and transitional phrases instead of these to progress our arguments.

Note: These transitions are fine for speeches, but not for college-level formal arguments. You CAN do this internally in a paper to make a series of points for one thesis point, if need be, just not as your primary organization following the thesis statement for the “main” points.
