The Gold Rush

In 1848, only 15,000 people lived in California. That year, James Marshall found gold. He didn't tell anyone about the gold. It was a secret.

But then the newspapers heard about it. Soon, thousands of people from all over the world came to California to look for gold. They left their towns, their farms, their stores and their homes. They left everything because they wanted to get rich. They came by ship, in wagons and on foot. They crossed mountains and rivers. They traveled for many months. It was a long, hard journey and many people died on the way.

At first, there was a lot of gold in the rivers of California. Some of the first gold diggers became very rich. It was exciting. Then, life became hard. People started to steal gold from each other. There were no laws and many people had guns. Life was dangerous.

The Gold Rush ended in 1870. What happened to James Marshall? He started the Gold Rush, but he never got rich. He lived in a small cabin in California for many years. He died in 1885—a poor man .
