• Continental Shelf: Part of the continental crust; the area of
seabed around a large landmass where the sea is relatively
shallow
• Continental Slope: the slope between the outer edge of the
continental shelf and the deep ocean floor
• Continental Rise: found between the continental slope and the
abyssal plain

• Abyssal Plains: Generally between the continental rise and a mid-ocean
ridge; smooth flat regions
• Mid-Ocean Ridge: Underwater mountain range formed by plates diverging
• Trench: Underwater trenches formed by convergent boundaries; deepest
part of the ocean
• Facts:
• The average depth of sediment is 0.3miles
• Sediment consists of rock particles and organic remains (dead stuff)
• Scientists use sonar to investigate the bottom of the ocean

• When salts dissolve in water, they separate into particles called Ions• Example:

• Most parts of the ocean have a salinity of 3.4% -3.7%• Near the ocean surface, rain, snow, and melting ice lower salinity
• Why?
• Hot/dry climates can increase salinity• Why?• Red Sea: 4.1%

Effects of Salinity
• Salt water freezes at a lower temperature• Salt interrupts the water
molecules and keeps them from forming a solid
• Salt water is more dense than fresh water• This effects buoyancy (causes
things to float easier)

photosynthesis• Oxygen more plentiful near the
