Discussion
How would you define “beauty” – is it different for people vs. things?
“Beauty is only skin deep.” – This means beauty is only on the surface (like the skin), not underneath in someone’s heart, mind, or soul. Do you agree?
Do people (men or women) in your country change themselves to become more “beautiful”? What do they do?
Pre-Reading Skills
Check background knowledge • Complete the survey on p. 22. Do you understand all
of the vocabulary?
Predict what you are going to read about• Look at pictures and titles• Scan (quickly read) and answer the questions in Part
B. Look for adjectives and nouns as key words and
underline them Ex: Maya crossed eyes, beautiful, balls, children’s eyes
