Transcript of Unit 2 Lesson 4 Digestion in the Mouth. Mechanical Digestion: Is the process of breaking down food...
Mechanical Digestion:
• Is the process of breaking down food into smaller pieces.
• In the mouth, this is done by our teeth breaking and tearing food into smaller pieces.
Chemical Digestion
• Is the process of breaking the chemical bonds in nutrients and changing those nutrients into simple forms that can be absorbed into the bloodstream.
• It breaks down the food we eat into something the bloodstream can absorb.
Salivary amylase:
• A digestive enzyme that starts the chemical digestion where starch is turned into a simple sugar.
Conditioned reflex for digestion in the mouth:
• This is when your mouth is conditioned to something that you associate with eating and it begins to salivate.
• To salivate means that your mouth fills with saliva (liquid produced by your salivary glands).
What is a bolus?
• When food is chewed and mixed with saliva, it then turns into a moist ball.
• The moist ball is called bolus.
What is the function of the epiglottis?
• Each time you swallow, the epiglottis closes the windpipe (trachea) so the food will go down the other tube in your throat (esophagus) to the stomach.
How many tubes do we have in our throats?
• 2
• 1 goes to the stomach (esophagus), the other goes to the lungs (trachea/windpipe).
