IntroductionIn this unit, you will develop your knowledge of rugby. You will learn the rules of the game in more detail. You will also further improve your rugby skills and tactics.

The technical skills include:

⛣ Running with the ball – Changing running angles effectively and at speed to beat opponents

⛣ Passing – Using different types of passes to move the ball quickly and well

⛣ Introduction to tag – Learning the correct position to defend and stop your opponent

The tactical skills include:

⛣ Attacking – Learning passing patterns and running angles to beat opponents

⛣ Defending – Moving as a defensive line to prevent the other team scoring a try; identifying an attack and changing tactics to prevent a try

Performance criteriaThrows a leading pass to a moving partner off a dribble or a pass in small-sided gameplay (G9.1.2)

Catches from a variety of trajectories and speeds using different objects in small-sided gameplay (G9.1.3)

Throws using the appropriate distance or power for an activity in small-sided gameplay with accuracy (G9.1.4)

Executes at least three offensive tactics to create open space (e.g. creates width, moves to open space without the ball, uses a variety of passes, pivots and fakes, uses give and go) (G9.2.1)

Passing the ball

Activity 4

You are now a coach. Have a look at your classmate. Tick what they are doing well and place an X where they could improve.

Hold the ball in two hands with your fingers spread apart.

Keep your elbows slightly bent.
