Task 5: Preparing to edit : importing clips; bins; timelines; storage and folder management; online and offline editing; formats; resolution

Unit 16: Film and Video Editing Techniques

Creating Bins

By creating bins, this simply means that the promo video and clips can be stored in one place on Final Cut allowing no clips to be mislaid or mixed up with other projects. When editing creating bins allows the editor to know where clips are stored and in a professional setting if the editor is working with more than one person, the other editor will know where to find clips that they need to work with for the part of the edit they are dealing with.

Importing Clips

By importing clips all at once it allows the editor to have access to all the clips they need but also this allows them to add any clips that they have been waiting for from the animation department or any late filmed pieces. In a professional setting, some editors start editing with the director before the final scene is filmed as this allowed the director to make any chances they need to the script or add new scenes to replace old ones.

Storage and Management

Page 23: Unit 16 part 2 workbook

Unit 16: Film and Video Editing Techniques

By managing where the clips are stored in Final Cut, as this allows the editor to know where clips can be found when working on a certain part of the film. This allows the editor to be able to see their projects and locate any projects they are working on easily.

Timeline

By editing on the timeline, it allows the editor to see where each clip is located on the timeline. This also allows the editor to edit the sound along side the clips so that the two works together correct and flows more softly and smoothly.

Format

Page 24: Unit 16 part 2 workbook

Unit 16: Film and Video Editing Techniques

The format setting for the clips are important when editing as some formats do not work on some computer types like PC or Mac. MOV and MPEG4 are the two most common formats of file clips that I used as these work on a Mac and Final Cut. However there are other types of formats like WMV with is Windows Movie Video, which does not work, as it is not compatible with Final Cut.

Resolution

Page 25: Unit 16 part 2 workbook

Unit 16: Film and Video Editing Techniques

The resolution of the film is important for the viewer; the most common resolution is the 1080P, which is the progressive scan also known as Full HD. This allows the viewer to see sharp and clear images on the screen. 720P is the lowers resolution and can appear broken or unclear on the screen for the viewer. The audience is now use to seeing everything in HD and it is now expected for videos to appear in this. However as normal technology is now developing and soon videos can appear in 4K.

Video Codec

Video Codec is a type of compression that can be used to compress the video allowing the space to decrease and will vary the size and quality of the file. This can consider compatibility with hardware and software.

By compressing the file, it allows the file to be spared and send without having a large file, which can’t be shared. If the file is used on a website, if it is too large the site will not be able to embed the clip and no one will be able to view it.

Online & Offline Editing

When films were developed from file reels and tape before editing the editor would copy the original footage and then edited the copy without using the original. This style helped to not damage the original film reels, which would have meant that part of the film would have been unusable for the final edit. Once the edit was complete and approved the editor would edit the original reel of the film, as an edit decision list would have been made during film. When editing became digital offline editing was when the footage would be edited however wouldn’t change the original footage until the editor applied the online editing and

Page 26: Unit 16 part 2 workbook

Unit 16: Film and Video Editing Techniques

it is then that the software would apply the edit. Offline is known as editing low-resolution footage where storage is an issue when online editing changes it’s meaning to where the pictures are reassembled at full or ‘online’ resolution.

Task 6: PRODUCTION DIARY Date Progress Review Areas to improve30/11/15 Before starting to edit any clips I started by

creating a new library and housing the project inside that so all my clips would be in one place. After that I imported all the clips that I needed through filling out my edit decision list. Then by looking through the clips I started to create the first few moments of the promotional video by adding in the audio track and started to add the voice over welcoming the viewer to the college.

Try to cut to the beat of the song and to edit the sound around the audio so the viewer can hear the people talking

01/12/15 Working with the audio of the voice over to welcome people to the college and to dull the audio correctly so all the words can be heard. By working on placing the audio around the voiceover and the voices from the student comments

Improve text and sound of voice overs as it is still a little quieter than the audio

03/12/15 Edited scenes from art and college environment by improving the sound and the text that will appear on the clip as well as the audio with comments from student.

Completing the next section for the video

04/12/15 Client Follow up meeting – by adding interviews from students about their subjects along with he next section of clips. Also with the interviews and the voiceover working on dulling the audio.

Sound needs improving and more text on the scene with more of the voice over

Page 27: Unit 16 part 2 workbook

Unit 16: Film and Video Editing Techniques

07/12/15 Working on completing the middle section of the promo video by adding the voice over and interview clips and moving on to finishing the video

Work on the comments and how the music ends the video

08/12/15 Finishing the video by working on the music and the final part of the video. By editing the background audio, it allows the ending to flow more natural and end correctly for the viewer instead of the music just stopping.
