Scene-by-scene breakdown
Scene 1
• Black Screen cuts to the camera lens getting uncovered. It is a POV shot inside a warehouse. A man in a suit approaches the camera, and starts to deliver a monologue, making it ambiguous to what he is talking about.
Scene 2
• Cut to an awkward family dinner – they are eating a very small dinner comprised of leftovers, everyone is giving dirty looks to the father.
Scene 3
• Awkward exit from the dinner table. Father goes upstairs to his laptop. He opens it up and enters an online poker game.
Scene 4
• We see a concerned look on his face as he goes bust. He slams his laptop closed as he realises he is out of money. The laptop screen is broken as he looks back at it.
Scene 5
• Cut back to the warehouse. Slowly pan around from the man in the suit to see the father sitting in a chair, looking disheveled, with duct tape over his mouth. The man tears the tape off, and asks where his money is.
Scene 6
• Father explains how he will get the money back to the loan shark, as he writhes around in his chair.
Scene 7
• Man cuts the tape that is binding the father’s arms and legs, and helps him up. He then mentions the father’s different aliases in his online poker games and states that he knows that he has no money and that he will not be able to get it back. He starts shouting, and screams that he hates a man without integrity.
Scene 8
• The man pulls a pistol out of his suit jacket, and aims it at the father’s head. He then moves it down to his chest (heart) and pulls the trigger. Cut to black.
Scene 9
• Fade in to the father standing in a dark room full of smoke (and mirrors). It is quite clear that it is purgatory, with one side of the frame having a slight blue tint and one with a slight red tint. Quick flashes to arguments with his family and moments in which he lost all of his money (these flashbacks are in slow motion).
Scene 10
• We see the loan shark’s thugs approach the body as he puts his gun away and walks off. (slow motion).
Scene 11
• We see the father glance to the red side of the room, and the red tint takes over the frame. Fade out.
