Unit 1 – What is Esports?
P1,P2,M1,D1 – Understand the organisation of esports and traditional sports
industry’s in the UK and globally
Esports is the act of playing games at a professional level in organised tournaments and games in
order of the purpose of entrainment but also for financial gain though sponsorships and tournament
winnings. This is a sector that the UK government has seen potential in and thus has seen it fit to
develop this sector within the UK as there is potential for the UK to become world class in another
area of the world. Due to the potential that Esports has for the UK back in 2016 the BEA or British
Esports Association that is a non-profit-organisation was founded in order to help popularise as well
as manage and supply Esports competitions and teams around the UK in order to develop the sector.
The BEA mainly focus on smaller start up teams in order to help diversify and expand the industry
with such endeavours to encourage the creation of Esports teams in schools and colleges across the
UK and to host tournaments for them to compete in in order for players and organisations to be able
to make a name for themselves with the chance that they will be scouted for Esport teams and
potentially even Teams that are managed directly by the UK and compete in events against other
nations like Germany, the United states of America and south Korea just to mention a couple
nations. The DCMS or the Department for Digital, culture, media & Sport is responsible for the
cultural development of the UK for a governmental standpoint and so due to Esports being
commented on by the government as “Esports has the potential to develop as an area of real
national strength in the UK,” this means that the DCMS is invested in the further development of
Esports within the UK As if the government is interested in it so is the DCMS. The main issue with
Esports in the UK is that fact that is still not considered a Sport but is considered a Game and so this
really doesn’t benefit the UK Esport scene.

The association for UK interactive Entertainment UKie
Ukie or the UK interactive Entertainment is a trade body that has the goal of making the UK the
centre of the games industry with game creation, playing and selling being the highest across the
globe. UKie was originally known as ELSPA and is the longest running games trade body in the world
and it primary focus is the expansion of Games industry with the UK at the centre of that expansion
and it has assisted in this goal with accolades such as helping with the development and the
introduction of the PEGI age rating system in order to make gaming more accessible and help
remove the idea that all video games are simply violent shooters with the creation of the age rating
system to showcase that games are suitable for all demographics this links to Esports as with the
expansion of the gaming industry so does the interest as well and this can lead to more people
knowing and caring about Esports and this can only be a good thing as there will be more money
allocated to the Esports industry and ultimately there about everyone benefits as prize pools would
become larger with more completions being host allowing for more opportunities for players and
teams to get their name out there and get the recognition they deserve.

The National University Esports League NUEL
NUEL or the National University Esports League is a organisation that has the goal of getting
university’s across the UK&I to compete in Esport completions in order to expand the industry but to
also showcase how accessible Esports really is as well as get as many people involved as possible as
there are as little entry requirements as possible and those are just as long as the people on a team
have to be from the same university. They are in partnership with major companies in the industry
such as Intel and steelseries and are associate with Amazon though Twitch Students as game and
completions are often streamed. This is good for Esports as this only helps increase the awareness of
Esports but also the people directly involved in it and this can lead to even greater opportunities for
people to enter and get involved in the industry as a whole.

sector in the UK as a result of this and globally this is good as this creates more awareness for
Esports as a whole and this can only be a good thing considering the larger Esports gets the more

industry globally as well as in Japan as the JESU pushed for a way to increase the potential of prize
pools as due to a Japanese law called the Penal Code that is used to heavily limit the act of gambling
and so that affects the prize pool to so though the development of a Pro gaming licenses this allows
people to take part in tournaments to earn cash.

Esports in China
China has a very large population who are interested in Esports due to the popularity of game such a
Free Fire in china that is a Battle Royale game that has done a lot better and has been very
successful in Asia but hasn’t really taken of in the west compared. One of the biggest names in
Esport is Tencent a Chinese company that has influence in a lot of different company’s but for
Esports Tencent owns Riot games created of League of Legends currently the biggest Esports title in
the western market as well as partially owning Activision Blizzard creators of publishers of
Overwatch and Starcraft 2 both of which have been successful Esport titles.

Esports in Sweden
When it comes to Esports in Sweden it has been an interesting journey for it as it has been very
popular in Sweden with well-known teams like Ninjas in Pyjamas originating from Sweden but
despite this until recently didn’t recognise Esport as a sport until recently where they changed the
status of Esports into a sport. Esports in Sweden are managed by the SESF but when the
International 10 was set to take place in Stockholm but was refused as Esports then was not seen as
a professional sport and so was not allowed to take place in the Avicii Arena SESF was unable to act
to try and allow for the Event to still take place as the government still had the final say and SESF had
to try and gain popular support from the Swedish people in order for the government to reconsider.

to the people of Australia though the wide spread of Esport based media as well as the hosting of
Esports tournaments. Their primary goals are to help prove how inclusive an activity Esports really is

Esports industry.

USef – United States eSports Federation
USeF or United States eSports Federation is responsible for the governing and management of
Esports inside of the USA. This is a non-profit organization that has been established in order to
make sure that the Esports market in the United States expends and the this only benefits the
industry as with more awareness and positive news around it can only improve the image of Esports
making it easier for teams and players to get recognition that they deserve. The USeF has a program
they refer to as “Armour On” and so this is a method they go though in order to try and protect
Esport players though carful management for mental health and anti-doping as well as other areas
that are meant to make sure the Esport professionals are performing as well as they possible doing.

Organisation and structure of traditional sports in the UK
When it comes to the structure that is a part of more traditional sports in the UK a good way to
describe it is through the use of a hierarchical chart. The lowest tier of this hierarchy is known as
Foundation and this would relate to things such as doing PE lesson’s in school as this level of Sport
almost everyone has experienced this and so on a list of being disinterested or a novice at sport or a
select sport as a whole.
The next level of this Hierarchy is known as Participation and a lot of people reach this level but at
many as foundation as this is it taken to a newer level as this would include doing extra curriculum
activates involving PE like joining the school’s football team or partaking in sport for the purpose of
fitness and this could include things such going for Runs or actively visiting the Gym or any other
place for the same purpose.
The Next tier up is known as Performance and this level consists of people who take sports and
physical activities seriously and this could be showcased in a manner of way some of those could see
in a change in diet in order to make sure they are eating correctly in order to develop themselves in
order to make the activity easier and allowing them to perform at a higher level than before. This
level also implies a certain amount of natural skill and ability as in this level players would start to
take part in low ranks of professional sports for example in a football team like a city club like Exeter
Football Club.
The final and highest tier on this hierarchy would be Excellence and this level is where very few
people make it to as this is where people in this tier take part in high level competitions and their
name and brand are almost known in every household even if just in their own country. At this tier
people would be on strict diets in order for them to perform at their best ability as a lot of money
would be offered to them in order to play to the best of their abilities.
Within the United Kingdom sports is represented in a multitude of ways throughout the country and
at many different levels of administration. This is showcased by that fact that sports can be managed
by the public though the playing of sport without the need of any legislation and this would also go
under voluntary but also in the private sector with private sports teams run by organisations.
Primarily with major teams and sports there are teams that represent the country as well as city
teams that are managed by the city’s local council but all of these report to a governing body in their
part of the county like the Sport of England department or Sport Scotland as to give an example of
governing bodies of sport in the United Kingdom. This Point here is where traditional sport and
Esports differ as for British Esports the main body that helps run the event is known as the BEA or
British Esports Association and the important thing to know about the BEA is the fact that it is not a
governing body but a national body so it has less influence over Esports than if a governing body was
established by the government as the BEA works with the government but isn’t a part of the
government.
https://www.brianmac.co.uk/structure.htm
Global organisations and bodies involved in Esports
When it comes to Esports one of the most important people in the industry if not the most
important are the Game Publishers. Important examples of game publishers for Esports could be
Daniel Mountford
Daniel Mountford
Riot games and Activition Blizzard. Though both game publishers main Esport title that they support
are different both of these publishers share ties to a global company known as Tencent. Tencent are
a tech company that have investments in all theatres the internet but them having control over riot
games and a significant amount of Activistion blizzard this gives them a large amount of control over
global Esports as Riot Games major title League of legends is the current largest Esports title and so
this shows just how important and large of an impact that Global organizations and companies have
over the Esports industry as unlike a traditional sport like football where no company or government
owns the idea of football when it comes to Esports it is always going to be a game created by a game
publisher that is being played competitively and so this will make sure that individual company’s will
have a large amount of control over this industry. Activistion Blizzard’s Overwatch made an
important and large empathies on the fact that it is a competitive team based shooter and so this
naturally allowed it a place as a Esport as it is so competitively based and due to its simple format of
2 teams going against each other over a common objective as a core game play feature that makes
Overwatch an easy Esports title for people who don’t know much about Esports or gaming as a
whole to watch and start to understand as although Overwatch is a high skill and complicated game
due to its simple looking gameplay it makes a good Esport to watch.
Another important company in the Esports industry is Twitch. Twitch is the largest streaming
platform for liver performances in the world as well as for Esports as whenever there is an event like
an ESL championship there are often thousands of viewers watching the event on Twitch live as it
happens. Due to the large usage of Twitch in Esports this gives great opportunities for twitch to get
large advertiser partnerships and due to the size of Twitch as a platform can charge a large premium
for any advertisements that could be displayed on their site.
Instead of just having International companies involved there are also involved in Esports. One
example of this is the ESIC that was previously known as the Esports integrity coalition that is now
known as the Esports integrity Commission. The idea behind the ESIC is to make sure that
competitions are fair and that no cheating is taking place but that isn’t just strictly about cheating in
the game with the use of aim bot or wall hacks but also the idea of rigged matches due to bribes as
well as to reduce the chance that illegal substances are being used in order to gain an unfair
advantage otherwise known as Doping.

Evaluation
In Evaluation to the question of understanding the organisation of Esports and traditional sports
industries in the UK and globally it is very interesting seeing the vast amount of different global
opinions on Esports and its place within the Sports industry as at its current rate of growth and
recognition globally is making it quickly become one of the largest entrainment mediums. For the
Evaluation of Esports inside of the UK in recent years there has been a large increase of attention to
the Esports scene in the UK especially during the first year of Covid 19 during the lockdown’s with
more people becoming interested in Esports generally across the globe this also means more people
are getting interested in Esports in the UK. A response that the government made from a report
from the DCMS about immersive and addictive technologies Esports was mentioned in that report
and the government’s response to that question with it viewing it as a potential “area of real
Daniel Mountford
Daniel Mountford
national strength in the UK” indicates the interest of the government for the Esports industry to
expand within the UK but despite this interest the fact that Esports is still considered a game legally
and isn’t under the same regulation’s and support as sport this hinders the expansion as this limits
the funding that is available for Esports and due to it not being considered a sport this also means
that most thing related to Esports in the UK are non-profit organizations that work together but due
to their being little government intervention besides the BEA that is still limited in its power
comparted to the sport departments in the UK. Overall when it comes to the structure and
organization of Esports within the UK while I feel that the early steps have been taken successfully
for the foreseen expansion of Esports I still think that a lot of work is required if the Government
wants the UK to take a leading position in the Global Esports Sphere of influence.
When it comes to evaluating the Global structure and organisation of Esports I found this topic
rather interesting to research as it is nice to see the wide variety of nations and city states around
the globe that are seeing the potential of Esports and are taking the necessary steps in order for it to
continue to grow at an incredible rate. When it comes to nations that are heavily involved in Esports
it is nice to see the wide range of country’s and all of them not being nations you expect to see with
nations like Denmark, Poland and Singapore taking the necessary steps to further Esports inside of
their countries with Denmark doing particularly well with the development of their Esports industry.
The main thing that needs to happen for the popularity of Esports to further increase is to make the
viewership of Esports more accessible as this is one of the main issues that Esports has in a large
majority of countries like the UK compared to south Korea and the USA as Esports has been televised
in these counties before as I have even seen Esports on TV when I went on holiday to the States and
this was the Overwatch league being televised and it was refreshing to see.
As on overall statement on the current situation regarding the structure and organisation of Esports
in the UK and globally I feel that a lot of nations are making good steps in the development of the
industry but in some nations like the UK the issue of what to classify what Esports is and it not being recognised as a sport is really holding back the expansion of industry in those selective nations.
P3,P4,M2,D2 – Examine genres of esports games titles played by professional
and grassroots esports teams and tournaments
Esport Teams
London Spitfire is a Overwatch professional team who’s most documented success was their victory
in the first Overwatch league tournament that earned them a reputations for being a well-oiled
machine of a team but after the first Season of the Overwatch league sadly London Spitfire were not
able to keep their victory’s coming and so only did alright admittedly and that for the mean time has
been their performance ever since as the players that previously brought them success went ahead
and joined different teams by around the 2 Season really none of the original members of London
spitfires remained and this has been reflected in their performance not matching their reputation.
For an example of a grassroots team inside the UK a particular team in Exeter college is showing
great potential being called Centurian.eXe as this is a team that I am personally involved in as it is
one of the Exeter college Overwatch teams. With two main tournament games played and with
these two matches being victories for Centurian with the first gaming being 3 : 1 and the second
game being a 3 : 0 this sets up Centurian on a good path for successes as these victories have done
nothing but brought the team closer together and improve their ability to work together as a team.
Daniel Mountford
Daniel Mountford
When it comes to an example of a Globally based team a good example of a very highly rated team
is that of Astralis who are mainly known for their CS:GO victories of which there are many. Founded
in 2016 after being rebranded from Team Questionmark. Astralis wins their first major competition
the following year after coming so close to victory many times with their 2 -1 defeat of Virtus.pro in
the Eleague major and from their go onto win again in 2018 in the grand finale of FACEIT and then
even more winning two separate competitions in 2019 both of them being 2 – 0 victory’s.
https://liquipedia.net/counterstrike/Astralis
https://cloud9.gg/teams/london-spitfire/
https://liquipedia.net/overwatch/London_Spitfire
Due to the previously mentioned teams I feel it is only right to discuss the structure of the
Overwatch league. Overwatch league is done by having all teams that compete go against each
other to fight for positions in two divisions and then teams compete in those divisions where they
can be eliminated. In total for a season 20 teams are put into Division 1 or division 2 depending on
how they did in the matches prior.
Esports tournaments
When it comes to typical Esport competitions that are streamed or televised are often played LAN or
as it’s known as Local Area Network and this is achieved through the use of connecting the PC
together or to a local server with Ethernet net cables and this allows for the fastest connection
between PC as there is no need for the game to connect over the internet as this could result in ping
issues but this might be needed for online tournaments like the games the BEA set up as with this is
done online as it is a country wide completion this is required for it to work. The issue with online
tournaments is that it requires every player to have a similar internet speed as if a player is lagging
this can completely loss the match for them in a game like overwatch where everyone has to be
playing to their best ability.
When talking about Esports championships and tournaments it would be wrong to not mention the
League of legends world championship as this is the largest Esports event in Esports at least in the
west. The way that the league of legends tournaments work is enough though two formats those
being a Single elimination match so the idea that what every team loss a match they are then out of
the competition or a Round robin system.

Genres of Esport games
When it comes to Esports there isn’t just as select type of game that is used In order to be a
standard format for Esports but instead there are a wide array of title’s available of for People to
partake in as well as to watch.
A Genre of games that are more often seen as a typical video game is that of the FPS genre or First-
Person Shooters. This is the type of game that most people associate with video games as they are
often depicted as violet shooters but for all FPS that isn’t true. When it comes to example of Esport
titles that are FPS there are quite a few to mention but some of the important ones to mention are
Overwatch as well as Call of duty with their COD league. Firstly, Overwatch is a 6 vs 6 Competitive
team shooter that sees these two teams fighting over control of an object in the competitive
matches and this could be one of three types of matches that is entirely dependent on what map is
being played. The three games modes are Payload where a team has to move an object across the
map on a set path by standing next to it as the defence tries to stop this from happening and the
goal of defence is to run the timer down and make sure that the offense don’t push the payload to
far. The Second object type is Capture point where a point in the middle of the map is fought over
for control as when a team capture’s a point it they start gain percentage towards 100% capture
progress as if a team gets to 100% they take a win on that first object. Lastly there is the
appropriately named Hybrid maps that contain a mixture of the previously mentioned game modes
with often a point to capture first that then leads into a payload section of a map. For another
example of an FPS game that has an Esport competitive scene is the Current Call of Duty game at the
time of the competition. Due to a new Call of duty game being released yearly the game that COD
league is played on often changes but due to all COD games being very similar to each other it still
works as a format. The game mode the recent COD league have been is that of Search and Destroy
and this means that one team has to plant a Bomb on one of two objects whereas the other team
has to stop the bomb being planted or defuse the bomb after it has been planted. Both teams can
win by simply eliminated the opposite team as in this game mode each player has one life unlike
other game modes in Call of Duty.
Another type of game that is played in Esports is that of MOBA’s or Multiplayer Online Battle Arena
is the genre of game that League of Legend’s is the current largest Esports title. This genre of game
often involves players before a match picking a character that in these types of games there are
often a lot of these characters in MOBA’s and after this they are put into a match where they have
to kill NPC or Non player controlled enemy or players if the situation arises in order to level up their
character for that match as well as gain currency in order to by items in order to enhance or provide
ability’s to them and this is where some of the skill of MOBA’s are highlighted with the construction
of “builds” that are a combination of items that work really well together. The way that MOBA’s are
won is by destroying an item in the opposing teams starting area but in order to achieve this teams
have to forge a path through to the enemy’s bass though the destruction of defensive fortifications
and turrets that is required to be destroyed in order to damage the final objective and win the
match.
When it comes to legislation and in particular the Content and age rating system of video games is
an important part of the industry as this is a safeguarding tool in order to help advise people and
importantly parents about content of a given game before purchasing it as well as the recommended
age for a player of that game though the age rating system isn’t law and is advisory but when
purchasing a game on a online store like the Microsoft store depending on what settings are applied
to that account changes if people can make purchases on a online store like having an age limit on
Daniel Mountford
Daniel Mountford
an account to limit what age rating of games they can play and purchase with that account and this
is an effective way of making sure that under aged children shouldn’t be able to access content that
they shouldn’t be able to. This is a form of safeguarding as you don’t won’t a young child playing a
game like Grand theif auto 5 as this might not be the right form of content as this game Is known for
containing sexual content that shouldn’t be viewed by the under aged.
When it comes to the Demographics of Esport players the general idea that all Esports player are
young guys from Asia this statement is incorrect as when it comes to the country or region that
Esports players come though they can come from any place on Earth as long as they have the
abilities required to become a Esports player and a team notices them and they are able to secure a
way to live in the area that the team is based in. When it comes to age then this is wear it becomes
similar to other Sports as with this it really does depend on the ability of the player in question as if a
player becomes older but still plays the same it would be a bad idea not to keep that player and so in
Esport’s as long as a player is still performing well due to age having less of an impact compared to
other sports. For Gender due to Esports inclusive nature there isn’t such things as only men’s teams
or females teams league besides certain event to try and help more females take an interest in
Esports but to also help prove that only Guys play Esports as this is simply not true. When it comes
to the technology of Esports most Esport titles are run through the Use of a PC as this is the
strongest device for running games currently but the typical types of input isn’t just limited to
keyboard and mouse as for games like Rocket league a controller typically an Xbox controller is used
as for the movements in this game the controller is a lot better for the use.
In conclusion to the question of explaining genres of Esport games that are played by professional
and grassroots Esports teams. Compared to other sport’s like football where there is no variation as
football has very hard and set rules as this is how it is established and is managed but compared to
Esports that due to it nature the rules besides those of cheating cannot be the same as rules differ
from game to game as a rule that might apply in League of Legends might not be applicable in
Overwatch. The diverse nature of Esports in only really a benefit for the industry its self as it allows
every more people to be interested in Esports as a Game like Rocket league potentially a different
audience compared to a game like overwatch or League of legends.
When it comes to the efferent expansion of the Esports industry it is important that any
international body’s have a good working relationship with Game publishers as ultimately they are
the ones that can decide to pull a game from the Esports industry despite doing that action would
cause a large wave of negative press as well as the loss of face and finance it is still a potential thing
that could occur and so it is still a thing to consider for the Esports industry.
Overall the Tournament structure of Esports is very similar to the sports industry and this is defiantly
due to the new nature of Esports and the fact that sports like football have had little adjustments to
their rule and this is well understood only leads to the natural progression of a sports like
management of the industry as it is the closest thing in relation to it.
