Cultural NotesCultural NotesReceptionisReceptionist The job of a hostess is to greet and seat guests when they arrive. The following details should be kept in mind when arranging seats for guests: 1. Ask if the guests have a reservation. 2. Confirm the number of guests. 3. Ask the guests’ opinions as to which tables they would like. 4. If the restaurant is full at the time they wish to dine, ask the guests to wait, or suggest room service if they are staying in the hotel. 5. Never forget to call the guests on the waiting list the moment you have a vacant table. In most hotels, the hostess is also responsible for presenting the menu to guests. When the guests are leaving, the hostess should also thank them and ask them to come again. The hostess, however, is not the only one who greets guests and sees them off. The restaurant manager sometimes also welcomes guests and bids them farewell. When many guests arrive at the same time and there are not enough hostesses to greet them, the waiters and waitresses may also have to help.
