Unit 1 exam year 9 2014.

Make a series of revision sheets for the different sections. Include key words/diagrams/processes/create a glossary of the key terms.

1. Restless Earth

Name and draw/find an image for:

a) 4 layers of the Earth.

b) 2 types of Earth’s crust.

c) 4 types of plate boundaries.

d) 2 types of tectonic events. (Earthquakes and Volcanoes)

e) Ways we can prepare/manage for Earthquakes and Volcanoes.

Create a case study on the Japan earthquake and tsunami of 2011 on the 11th of March. You need to look at the causes, effects and response to the earthquake.

2. Climate Change

3 Natural theories to climate change. Explain each of the below in detail.

1. Eruption theory2. Sunspot theory3. Orbital theory

Explain what the greenhouse effect is with labelled diagram.

Explain how the UK will have problems and benefits if climate change causes a temperature increase.

Why plants and trees are called a carbon store?

Why might climate change impact Egypt more than other countries and explain why this is a climate change risk due to global warming? ‘Water wars are inevitable in North East Africa’ Explain this statement?

3. Biosphere- Rainforest

Explain the following key words to do with biomes:

• Latitude

• Continentality

• Altitude

• Temperature

• Precipitation

• Geology

• Relief and Drainage.

What is a good of the rainforest and give an example and what is a service of the rainforest and give an example.

Using examples explain some ways of conserving threatened species.

Page 2: Unit 1 Exam Year 9 Revision 2014

Explain how and why people cut down the rainforest. Explain which method is more sustainable.

Write a summary paragraph to explain why the worlds Rainforests could lose a lot of species because of climate change.

4. Water world

Find/Draw an image of the water cycle and explain 3 flows of this cycle. Ensure you know the Key words.

What does the term water stress mean? Explain the difference between physical scarcity and economic scarcity.

There is a decline in water availability and water quality, come up with 3 to 4 reasons why this is happening and make sure you say why.

List the causes of drought and famine due to a lack of water.

Create two Case studies on the solutions of water crisis one on large scale management and one on small scale management (immediate or appropriate technology):

1. The three gorges dam or the South to North diversion project (large scale)2. Rainwater harvesting/tube wells/well digging with example. (small scale)

5. Coasts

Explain with a diagram what a discordant coast and a concordant coastline are.

Explain what Erosion, transportation and deposition means? What landforms are created in each coastal process?

What does CASH mean and explain each of the features of erosion with labelled diagrams.

Describe what Long shore drift is and use an image/draw a diagram

Why will rising sea levels affect us here in the UK so much?

For management of the coasts, What is hard engineering and give examples of three.

For management of the coasts, What is soft engineering and give examples of three.
