Opening of the main contacts
The moving part goes down thus separating themain contacts. There is no arc striking as thecurrent keeps flowing from the upper terminal tothe moving parts through the arcing contacts.During the downstroke, the moving part exert apressure on the gas housed in the lowerchamber; the pressure increase generated inthe lower chamber opens the connection valveof the upper chamber. The compressed gasflows from the lower to the upper chamber thustaking both enclosures at the same pressurelevel.
1- no leakage from the nozzle as it is blockedby the fixed arcing contact
2-no leakage from the cylinder of the movingarcing contact as it is blocked by the fixedarcing contact
3- the upper chamber is connected to themoving mechanism and its volume remains thesame during the downstroke (dead volume)
4-the only changing volume is the one of thelower chamber, whichdecreases during thedownstroke of the moving contact
5- this puffer is designed to avoid choppingcurrents by means of a “dead volume” higherthan the compressed volume. As the gas flowstowards the upper chamber, the pressure levelis equal to the ratio between the dead volumeand the lower chamber volume.

IOpening of the arcing contacts
The current keeps flowing due to the arcgenerated between the fixed and movingcontacts. The gas cannot leak either from thenozzle as the hole is blocked by the fixedcontact or from the inside of the moving contactbecause of the arc clogging effect.
The breaking chamber undergoes the followingprocess:
At low currents: as the current hits the natural zeroand the arc is quenched, the gas flows fromthe dead volume to the inside of the movingcontact. The low pressure guarantees the absenceof chopping currents and the small quantity of gasinvolved is sufficient to restore the dielectricstrenght between the two contacts by avoiding, atthe same time, the re-strike of the transientrecovery voltage
At higher short circuit currents: the pressure waveof the arc propagates like a supersonic wave, increasing the gas pressure which closes the valvebetween the two chambers. From this moment on,the device starts working as a pure “self-blast”, thegas overheating and the molecular dissociation dueto the high temperature increase the pressure in thedead volume. Said pressure is proportional to thearc and the resulting gas flow guarantees thequenching at the first passage through zero naturalcurrent.

Circuit-breaker in the open position
The arc is quenched; the lower chamber reaches itsminimum volume and its maximum pressure level, kept by the valve locked by the supersonic wave. Asthe self-generated pressure of the dead volumedecreases, due to the outflow of the gas through themoving contact, the valve re-opens. From now on, anew jet of fresh gas flows in and makes thetemperature of the contacts sink. At the same time, the gas flows through the nozzle, free from the fixedarcing contact. The “cleaning” of the arcing chamberby means of fresh gas makes the device suitable foranother reclosing and the interruption up to themaximum breaking capacity.
