ESMA Academy for the first time in EnglishThe third edition of the successful ESMA Academy “Industrial Digital Printing” will be held in English on 5-8th November 2018 in Stuttgart.
The Advanced Functional and Industrial Printing conference returns to Düsseldorf on 27-28th March 2019 with an even broader approach to printing technologies which serve the production processes of today and near future. ESMA members and non-members are welcome to submit their papers and contribute to an agenda full of learning, inspiration and networking. The conference brings together OEMs, suppliers, printers, researchers and production architects.
Following increasing requests from the participants, the four-day course on theoretical and practical aspects of the piezo inkjet process and related topics such as inks, curing and colour management, is now offered in English. Organisers from ESMA, Fraunhofer IPA and Hochschule der Medien (Stuttgart Media University) are building on the success of the two German editions which provided certified know-how to forty attendees from the DACH region.
The first alumni of the ESMA Academy praised the comprehensive curriculum with a good balance between theory and practice. For the upcoming edition, the programme remains unchanged and gives an overview of both technology and its applications. Theory blocks include piezo inkjet, inks and substrates, mechatronics and electronics of the printing systems. Practical sessions, held at the work stations in the laboratories of Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation, include ink characterisation, determination of print parameters, drying and cleaning mechanisms, mechanics, fluidics and electronics, quality evaluation and colour management. After the successful completion of the course, each attendee receives a certificate.
ESMA Academy is targeted at companies who want to obtain a well-founded overview of digital printing technologies, in order to make educated decisions to what extent inkjet could be integrated into their production process. Course tutors are renowned industry and academic figures, experienced in transferring know-how, the pros and cons of digital processes.
For the detailed programme and registration please visit www.esma.com/academy. The next edition of ESMA Academy in German is scheduled for 1-4th April 2019.
Organised for the fourth time in its current guise, the AFIP conference is already an established brand on the industrial printing market and yet its formula leaves enough room for innovation and keeps on attracting many newcomers. The previous edition in 2016 provided technology insights and real case scenarios from areas such as automotive, electronics or healthcare, including a speech on printed bio-sensors for diagnostics. One of the delegates, Gregory Gentile from Apple Inc., summed up the event as “an excellent mid-sized venue that focuses on new technology rather than sale of products – a great environment to learn and exchange ideas.”
By many considered as the key contribution to their technology roadmap, the conference continues to unite representatives of various market sectors. Next to major hardware, software and ink providers from the screen printing and digital inkjet world, AFIP welcomes input from technology users, emerging start-ups and academic institutions who want to highlight the latest available solutions and the future direction their research is leading them.
At the current stage, ESMA calls for submissions preferably on printed electronics, film insert moulding, automotive, in-mould decoration and in-mould electronics, name plates, industrial fascia, membrane switches, touch panels, sensors, printed batteries, anti-counterfeit, brand protection, bio-medical, consumer goods, colour control, functional coatings, printing with graphene, technical glass printing, technical textiles, thin film applications, process control and additive manufacturing.
The first confirmed keynote speakers include Prof. Timothy Claypole from the Welsh Centre for Printing and Coating at the Swansea University and Jesper Hassel, CEO of the young Swedish company Mevia. Prof. Claypole will talk about the recent research in fine line printing of functional inks for automotive applications and Jesper Hassel will present Mevia’s “smart pill” technology which employs printing for pharmaceutical packaging.
Parallel to a conference programme of at least 20 high-level presentations, the networking part will feature 25 tabletop stands for more in-depth conversations and commercial information exchange. Among the early bird exhibitors are Adphos, Global Inkjet Systems, Grünig-SignTronic, Marabu and Pröll.
Advanced Functional and Industrial Printing takes place at the Radisson Blu Scandinavia hotel in Düsseldorf on 27-28th March 2019. The call for papers and an early bird exhibitor booking are now open and all interested companies, as well as research institutes can apply by sending an e-mail to [email protected]. For further updates please visit www.afip2019.org.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a critical substance
for the printing industry. It is used as a white pigment, producing a high degree of opacity, stability and durability. Many ESMA members will therefore be aware of the current issues associated with TiO
2.
Concern with the classification and labelling of the substance became a strong focus for industry and trade bodies, when a harmonised classification proposal for TiO
2
was submitted to the European Chemical’s Agency (ECHA) from ANSES, the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (On behalf of the French Member State Competent Authority).
The CLP Regulation defines a carcinogen as “a substance or a mixture of substances which induce cancer or increases its incidence. Substances which have induced benign and malignant tumours in well performed experimental studies on animals are considered also to be presumed or suspected human carcinogens unless there is strong evidence that the mechanism of tumour formation is not relevant for humans.”
A proposed harmonised classification is subject to public consultation and evaluation by ECHA’s Risk Assessment Committee (RAC). Once RAC have formed an Opinion, it is submitted to the European Commission for approval. If a harmonised classification is agreed, it is listed in Annex VI to the CLP Regulation. All manufacturers, importers and downstream users must comply with the harmonised classification of a substance.
ANSES acknowledge that the evidence for carcinogenicity from TiO
2 exposure in human
studies is inconclusive, submitting data from studies on rats to support the classification proposal. The studies conclude that rats exposed to significant concentrations of
TiO2 dust suffered “lung overload”, due to
low solubility and bio-persistency of the particles. In essence, TiO
2 particles remained
in the lungs of a number of the rats studied, leading to lung damage. Following evaluation of the data and information submitted, RAC decided on a category 2 carcinogen classification (H351i-suspected of causing cancer by inhalation) for TiO
2. RAC noted that the characteristics
of different forms of untested TiO2 (fibrous/
surface treated) should be subject to evaluation when placed on the market, to determine whether a higher carcinogen category should be applied, and whether other exposure routes for these forms were significant (oral, dermal).
The presence of a carcinogenic substance at fairly low concentration in mixtures usually triggers classification of the product. However, the classification decision was based on respirable forms of TiO
2. Once
diluted in liquid mixtures, TiO2 would not
be available for uptake by inhalation in dust form. This was one of the reasons that the Commission deferred action on titanium dioxide when the classification Opinion from RAC was submitted. The Commission referred the substance to another expert group, the Competent Authorities for REACH and CLP (CARACAL) to consider a number of factors including the applicability of the classification to dispersion in mixtures, and implications for substances with similar profile.
In summary, TiO2 has been challenging
for regulators. There is no conclusion yet on the Annex VI entry for the substance. Consideration of the classification of other similar substances is ongoing, as well as the impact of classification on mixtures containing TiO
2.
More to follow from ESMA on this important issue for members. Titanium dioxide regulation will also be the subject of a workshop held during the upcoming TheIJC on 15 October 2018 (see more at http://theijc.com/workshops), as well as it will be discussed at the next ESMA HSEP Committee meeting, 9 November 2018 in Leuven (www.esma.com/committees/hsep).

The ESMA pavilion is the place-to-be for all interested in the latest solutions for glass decoration at glasstec, 23-26 October 2018 at Messe Düsseldorf. ESMA members present screen, digital and pad technologies for flat and hollow objects, in applications ranging from packaging, through to architectural, automotive and appliance glass. Surrounded by printing systems, vision inspection devices, coatings, inks and other consumables, the visitors to ESMA booth in hall 12 D45 can also take advantage of expert advice.
“Since the last fair edition in 2016, there seems to be a clear revival of the glass industry and this was confirmed last year during our successful GlassPrint conference”, says Peter Buttiens, CEO of ESMA. “Printing on glass is much more than the traditional decorative processes. On one hand, special effects are pushing new limits, and at the same time, solutions for technical glass are in high demand, offering a combination of different functional printing technolo-gies for applications in smartphones, touch panels or wearables.”
All visitors to both ESMA and “Glass Worldwide” (hall 13, A40) booths can register their interest for the upcoming GlassPrint – the only conference dedicated to glass decoration. Powered by glasstec, GlassPrint offers now free day tickets to the exhibition. Glass deco-ration experts who register on time at www.glassprint.org/glasstec-tickets will receive a voucher for a one-day ticket, copy of “Glass Worldwide” with extended show guide, “2018-19 Guide to Glass Decoration” and “ESMA Newsletter”. Number of tickets is limited so the first come first serve rule applies.
