• In many areas consumers do not have access to cost-effective broadband via
traditional networks, satellites and wireless networks play an important role in
rural and remote areas by reducing the so-called “digital divide”.
• Any building can have fast broadband, so long as you can position a satellite dish
so that it can see the sky.
• You don't need a phone line for satellite and/or wireless broadband, that total cost
compares well with traditional or fiber broadband.
• Merging Satellite Broadband and Wireless Broadband to provide Universal
Access (UA) eliminates terrestrial bottlenecks and poor Internet coverage.
• Economic Implications: The World Bank estimates that a 10% increment in
broadband penetration can increase Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by nearly
1.4% (in low and middle-income economies)

• Fraunhofer Institute (Germany) utilized the UBS Transmitter solution as a test bed to aid in the design of the DVB-SH Receivers.
• UBS solution was Fraunhofer’s choice at the head-end of their development trials for several reasons:
– Possess automatic “Doppler and delay” compensation providing unheard of system performance.
– Achieved “code combining and SFN Gain” in the test Receivers (summing of COFDM and TDM signals simultaneously).
– Resulted in constant 10-6 BER with SNR 5dB!!
– The UBS solution became the measuring standard during the DVB-SH development.
