Plans for War Union leaders decided to block southern

seaports … why?- The Confederacy would not be able to trade with other countries!

● The Navy would also take control of the Mississippi River; then the Union army would attack in the East & West at the same time

South’s strategy The South decided to fight off northern

attacks until the Confederacy could survive as a separate nation

Southerners knew that many Northerners were already against the war, so if the Union lost too many battles the Northerners might give up

They also hoped for help from Britain & France because they needed southern cotton

The War in the East At the start, both sides expected a

quick victory Thousands of men from both sides

joined the armies At the First Battle of Bull Run, General

Thomas Jonathan Jackson led Confederate troops from the top of the hill. An onlooker said he looked “like a stone wall.” He became known as Stonewall Jackson.
