To produce a payout, the estimate is that Boeing’s stock must close above approximately $47 a share on June 30, 2006. With Boeing stock holding steady above $80 a share for weeks, members who participated in the full four years were estimated to earn over $5,000 each in stock. When Boeing introduced the Program in 1996, the Union ensured our members would share equally in any potential payouts. The actual amount each person will receive is not based on salary, but rather how many participants are in the program and the number of months each person par- ticipated during the invest- ment period (July 2002 through June 2006). Members should have re- ceived a letter from Boeing asking them to verify their months of participation to ensure an accurate distribution. It is well deserved for the role you have played in making Boeing successful. Members Say Union Made the Grade For any members who doubted the value of keeping our medical plan the same as the 2002 contract, they need look no further than our counterparts at SPEEA and their recent ordeal to main- tain their health care and doctors. SPEEA’s contract included a new Select Network Health Plan offered through Regence to replace Selections. This new network was also scheduled to be incorporated into SPEEA’s Tradi- tional Medical plan. It was described as a cost-efficient plan offering enhanced medical coverage with no increase in SPEEA members rally to delay implementation of new a health plan network. He stated, “It is great to see tooling involved in the new airplane. It did not look like we were going to get it. I assumed the vendors would be doing this work. It should be done by Ma- chinists Union members who are Boeing employees.” Credit goes to the Everett IAM Work Transfer Reps Don Fike and Richard Jackson, as well as District 751 President Mark Blondin who made the difference in convincing Boeing to do the right thing on this work package. Securing this work for our membership prompted several of the recent tooling recalls and should bring additional members back on the payroll. As the Aero Mechanic went to print, our members(along with other Boeing employees) were set toreceive the second payout from Boeing’s ShareValueProgram. To produce a payout, the estimate is thatBoeing’s stock must close above approximately $47 ashare on June 30, 2006. When Boeing introduced the Program in 1996,the Union ensured our members would share equallyin any potential payouts. more than capable of fulfilling the tool-ing requirements needed by the 787 pro-gram. It is a critical skill base that Boeingshould be anxious to preserve for futureairplane models.

751-Tooling member SteveWahlstrom, who gave input in the worktransfer meeting, reported, “When Ilooked at the work package, I knew wecould do it. However, at that point duringthe meeting, it seemed like Boeing was

simply collecting information and hadalready decided to use a vendor. DistrictPresident Mark Blondin did a great jobin directing them to follow the processoutlined in the contract and securing thiswork for our members.”

IAM Work Transfer Rep RichardJackson recalled, “At the end of the ini-tial meeting, the Company asked us towaive the required 180-day review pe-riod to transfer work to a vendor. We letthem know we did not have that kind ofauthority. Then they asked to meet with751 President Mark Blondin.”

After Blondin listened to the presen-tation, he firmly declared this work iscovered under the jurisdiction of ourbargaining unit. He insisted Boeingwould have to follow the process out-lined in 21.7 in the contract. He pointedout that our members’ skills are top notchand have ensured all other airplane lineshave been launched on time and metinitial delivery schedules. This recordshould have earned our members theright to 787 work. He also emphasizedthere would be plenty of opportunities tokeep these 40 members employed afterthe completion of the installation.

Yet his effort did not stop at the end ofthe meeting. Blondin called on top Boeingmanagement to do the right thing. Work-ing together, the IAM Work TransferReps, our tooling members and Blondinmade a difference and swayed Boeing tokeep the installation work inhouse.

Traditionally, our members have notonly installed the tooling for new air-plane models, but built it as well. Unfor-tunately, union efforts to secure toolfabrication work for our members didnot change Boeing’s decision. The Unionwill continue working to get Boeing todo the right thing and utilize the skills ofour members for more 787 work. WorkTransfer Reps fight daily to keep exist-ing work in-house, bring work back fromvendors and secure new work packagesfor our members.

Blondin noted, “I was glad to see ourmembers get this work, but believe weshould also be building the 787 tooling.We will continue to push to get morework on the 787. Our members haveensured the success of every Boeingairplane, and it is our members who willensure the 787 is successful, as well.”

As this issue of the paperwent to press, we are in dif-ficult negotiations atCummins Northwest in Spo-kane, Pendleton, Seattle, andPortland. In spite of thecompany’s unfair tactics, ourmembers at all Cummins locations re-main very strong. We will do what isnecessary to protect our hard won pen-sion and medical benefits.

We are facing tough negotiations atASC Tooling in Spokane as well. It willbe the determined efforts of our mem-bers and negotiating team that sees thiscontract through to a successful conclu-sion.

Our members at Triumph have com-pleted their first survey, and we havescheduled a membership meeting for

later this month. Althoughwe are nearly a year away, itwill take preparation and de-termination by the membersto get the great contract thatis deserved in this shop, aswell as for the other two men-tioned.

On the subject of surveys,I want to thank those in the

Boeing Locals who participated in thepost contract survey. As the number in-dicates, it wasn’t the perfect contract foreverybody. But, as in all contracts, it isthe membership who decides the priori-ties and the membership who vote it upor down. The job of the negotiating com-mittee is to secure the very best offerfrom the company that we can. One thingis certain: when the Machinists Unionwalked out of the Boeing factories andwithheld our work, it made a difference.

Hats off to SPEEA for protesting the

removal of doctors from the Regence plans.It should never have come to that. One ofthe reasons we rejected the contract wasdue to the costs and lack of informationprovided by Boeing in regards to this newhealth care plan. Because of the strengthand determination of the members in PugetSound, we maintained our health care plansfrom the previous agreement. We endorsequality health care at affordable prices.However, when we negotiate a plan, wewant to have all our members’ questionsaddressed.

We all have more work to do in re-gards to the next round of talks withBoeing. We have started the processwith this first survey. Those who an-swered the surveys are already partici-pating. I encourage all members to getinvolved and educate each other on theissues of importance. Although I believewe will be well positioned to secureanother good contract, it will be prepara-

tion, determination and involvement thatwill make the difference.

I applaud the efforts of our work trans-fer focals in Everett in ensuring that the787 tooling work package is performedby the IAM. Don Fike and Richard Jack-son worked hard on a business case thatshowed it made sense to do this work inhouse. We have tooling members on therecall list with over 25 years’ senioritywho will benefit from this.

Finally, if the trend continues, ourmembers and other employees at Boeingshould do quite well in the upcomingShareValue payment. This is no gift. Itrepresents your share of the profits, whichwere generated by the quality work, sac-rifices, and productivity of IAM mem-bers – the same people who led to thesuccess of the Boeing Company.

The President of Local 751-A andnew Vice President of District 751 CliftonWyatt, along with other leaders fromDistrict 751, had the chance to meet withthe legendary Georgia Congressman andgreat human rights leader John Lewis.

The sheer magnitude of the experi-ences of Congressman Lewis is awe in-spiring, as he is one of the last icons ofthe most tumultuous era in Americanhistory. He was a part of the gut wrench-ing struggles of the civil rights move-ment. Congressman Lewis, along withimmortals like the Reverend Dr. MartinLuther King Jr, Roy Wilkins, WhitneyYoung, A. Phillip Randolph, and manyothers, helped organize and successfullyexecute the 1963 march on our nation’scapitol. This was the backdrop for one ofthe most powerful speeches in the his-tory of human language – "I have aDream".

It is a dream Congressman Lewis stillpursues today. Before meeting with 751delegates in D.C., he was arrested forpicketing the Sudanese embassy to pro-test their treatment of citizens. Lewisencouraged our delegates to take backour country and stated, “It is time for us

On Wednesday, June 14th, the U.S.House of Representatives voted 291-137 to pass a transportation bill whichcontained a provision to restrict foreignownership of U.S. air carriers. In a de-bate reminiscent of the Persian GulfDubai Ports World ownership of Ameri-can seaports controversy, the “OpenSkies” proposal by the Bush Adminis-tration allowing foreign control of U.S.airlines was rejected by Congress.

This is another example of an over-reaching and out of step Bush Adminis-tration, mindless of national security andnational interests, acting with only theinterests of his investor and moneyedfriends. Ninety-seven CongressionalRepublicans joined the Democrats intheir opposition to the Open Skies pro-posal.

U.S. Airlines are an essential part ofour nation’s Armed Forces’ emergencydeployment plans. If our airlines are

to build a stronger political movement.This fall we must win Democratic seatsand take back the House. The Bush bud-get is very bad for working people, theelderly, our children, the sick and thepoor. It only benefits the super rich. Wecan do better and must get everyone outto vote like never before.”

“People who say nothing has changedshould walk in my shoes,” added Lewis.“I came to Washington in 1961 at 21years old when segregation prevented us

from riding in the same taxi or using thesame restroom. Those segregation signsare gone. Now, the only place kids seethem is in a museum, in books or videos.We have changed and must continue thefight.”

Vice President Wyatt, and 751 del-egates, will take Congressman Lewis’advice and apply it here in our District.In 751, District President Mark Blondinhas fought to ensure fairness by makingappointments based not on the color of

controlled by a Persian Gulf nation, forexample, would America be able to ob-tain their permission to use their air-planes to deploy our troops to, say Af-ghanistan? Not likely.

This month President Blondin’s re-port at Local Lodge meetings focused onthe IAM&AW International Headquar-ters’ Surge Conference held May 8th.The conference, attended by Adminis-trative Assistant Jim Bearden, defenseindustry leaders and other labor leaders,focused on military industrial produc-tion capacity. The work of the confer-ence attendees explored our nation’sability to respond to a national defenseemergency. The main question: do wehave the ability to rapidly expand pro-duction in the case of a war. The newswas not good.

Our nation is not currently preparedto meet a military crisis. A recent ex-ample of this was clearly shown whenour military discovered they did not haveenough armored Humvees after the in-vasion of Iraq. Months went by and lives

were lost because our nation could notquickly respond to this important need.There were other examples given illus-trating our country’s peril because of alack of a national industrial policy.America would have to depend on Koreafor steel and Japan for shipbuilding. Ourtanks would be delivered to the U.S.Army, if Brazil chose to produce anddeliver them. The electronics compo-nents would have to be manufactured byour friends (?) in the Far East.

The bottom line is that givenAmerica’s current manufacturing capa-bility our national defense depends onthe willingness of foreign nations to pro-

duce the military hardware and compo-nents we would need to respond to anysignificant level of national militaryemergency.

Is this acceptable? No, it is not. Wemust pressure our elected officials tobuy American when it comes to provid-ing the tools needed by our troops, sol-diers, sailors and airmen. We cannotallow our service men and women’s fateto be left in foreign hands. That is whywe must ensure the aerial tanker is builtin America, by Americans, for Ameri-cans.

one’s skin, their age or gender but thecompetency of one’s record. These arethe types of efforts that civil rights lead-ers in days gone by revel in. It gives ushope that their work in those harsh daysof prejudices, persecution, and peril, wasnot in vain. Their pain, sacrifices, hu-miliation, and agony are paying off.

We are far from where Dr. King’sdream becomes a reality, but by God weare on our way! We can readily see inthe actions of 751 President MarkBlondin and his new Vice PresidentClifton Wyatt, that color, gender, andreligious affiliation are not an issue herein District 751. As John F. Kennedystated at American University in 1963,“we all inhabit this small planet, we allbreathe the same air.”

In keeping these words in mind it isrefreshing to see us learning from Con-gressman Lewis – an icon of the civilrights movement of the 1950’s and1960’s. We can see our District embrac-ing and executing the principles, goals,and ideals of an era we should never letdie in a never ending effort to makeDistrict 751 not only one of the mostdiverse Districts in the IAM, but one ofthe best in the IAM!

cost to employees.During the May open enrollment pe-

riod our members got no surprises –same doctors, same co-pays, same cov-erage (the monthly premiums did godown). Nearly 6,000 SPEEA memberswere shocked to receive a letter halfwaythrough the May open enrollment periodtelling them their doctors were not in thenew Select Network because they didn’tmeet ‘quality and efficiency’ standards.Adding to their anxiety was the fact thatif they continued to see one of the 500doctors no longer in the network, theircoverage for those doctors would be at 0percent – basically meaning no coverageif they did not change to a Select Net-work Plan doctor.

To their credit, SPEEA did not sim-

ply accept this decision. Members madephone calls, wrote letters and attended arally while leadership pressed bothRegence and Boeing for help in resolv-ing the issue. Doctors who were sus-pended from the network raised theirconcerns about the decision, as well.

SPEEA’s activities delayed imple-mentation of the new Select Networkuntil July 1, 2007. Because of the confu-sion, Boeing also extended SPEEA’sopen enrollment period until June 16.

Many IAM members called the Unionhall during open enrollment to confirmthat our plans were not affected, andtheir doctors would remain on our plans.This same “Select Network” plan wasproposed by Boeing and rejected by Ma-chinists Union negotiators.

751 Secretary-Treasurer SusanPalmer, who served on the Benefit Sub-

committee last fall, noted, “The prob-lems that occurred with SPEEA wereexactly why this Union objected to theplans when presented at the bargainingtable. How could we recommend a newplan when Boeing couldn’t tell us eitherthe criteria for determining the doctorsor provide a list of the doctors whowould be included in the network. Wefeared that many of our members wouldbe forced to change doctors and that wasnot a risk we were willing to take withour members’ medical care.”

In delaying the implementation,Regence has said it will use the comingyear to re-measure performance and givehealth care professionals the opportu-nity to improve their ranking. SPEEAmembers will have more time to locate anew doctor or hopefully learn their doc-tor is again included in the network.

Nearly every day, members of theIAM/Boeing Health and Safety InstituteSite Safety Committees work to improveworkplace safety. Whether it is findingan ergonomic solution, researching anincident to prevent it in the future ordetermining proper personal protectiveequipment in dealing with a new chemi-cal, the Site Committee plays a key rolein resolving safety concerns.

The Auburn Site Committee recentlydemonstrated its effectiveness in con-tinuing to make changes surrounding theMazak cell operation in the 17-07 build-ing. This continual search to improveworkplace safety is what makes HSI andthe Site Committees so successful. Even

after implementing one solution, theycontinued to look for a better, safer wayto perform the work and made additionalrevisions.

The issue initially arose a few yearsback when Maintenance Mechanic RickMcKinney went to repair a tool maga-zine on a Mazak machine, a robot sud-denly whizzed by his head – missing himby just inches. He wrote a Safety, HealthEnvironmental Action Request (SHEAR)form to ensure such a near miss wouldnot happen in the future.

“When I started to work on this ma-chine, I had no idea it was a Mazak cellwhere four machines are connected. Be-cause I didn’t know this one piece ofinformation, I could have been killed. Ihad followed procedure and locked outthe machine, but didn’t know about thetwo robots that work in the cell,” recallsMcKinney.

The HSI Site Safety Committee, work-ing with engineers and SHEA, had newprotective plates installed and locks wereplaced so the person performing repairscould not possibly move into the path ofthe robots. The revision also allowed theother three machines in the cell to con-tinue working rather than taking them allout of service to perform maintenance.This solution worked until during a re-cent audit it was discovered the locksviolated the lockout, tagout process.

Again, McKinney turned to the ex-

pertise of the Site Committee for a solu-tion. Committee members John Lopez,Jeff Rose and Mark Rubadue, met withSHEA and workplace services to find ananswer. They identified the multiple en-ergy sources and updated the process toreflect when one part of the machine islocked out for maintenance. New, largerplacards were posted on the machine. Anelectrical bus barrier was also installedthat prevents anyone from reaching upand grabbing the bus bar (which wouldbe in the path of the robots). In addition,they have changed the orientation/train-ing process when people come into thebuilding so maintenance employees are

The incident occurred when workers were takingdown a large trash chute to remove some decking. Therewas tension on the crane, and before workers could cutit loose a unistrut broke free hitting Rod Mesa, a Boeingwelder, in the head. The impact resulted in a huge gashon his forehead.

John, who worked as an ambulance driver years ago,broke his fall, helped Rod to the floor, kept him uprightand calm while using a hat as a compress. He keptpressure on the cut until the bleeding had stopped whilethe crane operator called for help. The Fire Departmentarrived three minutes later and took over.

John recalled, “Since he may have had a neck injuryfrom the impact, I kept him still. I thought he might havechipped his teeth, which often happens with a headinjury, so I had him spit to ensure he wouldn’t choke onanything. Since he is a member of the Operating Engi-neers, it was truly one Union helping another.”

Rod was thankful for the help and noted, “It gotpretty bloody, but John didn’t hesitate to help. I put himin for a Boeing 100 point award and was glad to seerecognition from his Union.”

After the incident, 751 members Todd Campbell andRon Brown, who have been trained in incident investi-gation, helped determine the root cause and recom-mended revisions to ensure no future incidents occur.

Committees Lead Continual Quest for Safety

aware there are two live robots on theMazak cell – one for pallet delivery andone for tool delivery.

“It was a simple fix that solved a mul-titude of problems. Any craft person caneasily understand the purpose of the plateand how to use it when working on themachine,” noted McKinney. “As a Stew-ard, I know safety and regularly go to theSite Committee to facilitate resolution.John Lopez and Jeff Rose, along with therest of the committee, are a great resource.HSI plays a key role in resolving safetyproblems and is the best process I havewitnessed at Boeing. They go across theentire site and do a great job.”

In an effort to create a safer work environment, IAM/Boeing Joint Programs helped develop crane training inSkin and Spar (Auburn and Frederickson). The objec-tive is to reduce ‘near miss’ crane incidents, reinforceprior training, introduce shop specific training for prod-uct lines and present safety awareness for everyone.

The training will have several phases that will bedelivered over the summer. The initial 20 participants inthe ‘pilot’ class gave the training high marks and en-joyed the combination of classroom and hands-on ac-tivity. Even the most seasoned veteran learned a fewthings about cranes.

One member noted, “Great course for both ‘veteran’and ‘new’ employees. Not everything in this classpertains to my job. However, there’s plenty of informa-tion for me to glean from and apply to my job. I think themost important thing is to think before you act. In otherwords, before you grab the crane box, think abouteverything – including SAFETY. I believe strong workhabits were also strengthened during this class. To-gether, I believe each of us from the class can share whatwe learned to our co-workers. The instructor was help-ful not only in his knowledge but left the opportunity foreach of us to add our input as well.”

Another member stated, “This class re-supplied mewith the information needed to do my jobsafer. I learned I had a couple of bad habits on riggingaspects. General consensus from the other crane opera-

tors is this training will help most of the crane operatorsdo a better and safer job. The instructor was great.”

The first phase was safety awareness presentedduring the month of May and was incorporated into theregular monthly safety meeting. It featured a video oncrane accidents and emphasized every employee mustbe aware of the cranes to ensure the crane’s horns don’tbecome background noise. They are a warning.

In June, a 2-day pilot class coveredcrane familiarization, daily inspections,control functions, hand signals, riggingand hands-on exercises. Participants werechallenged on a number of different skillspertaining to the crane. Each hands-on testwas timed and required extreme precision.

In July, they will begin peer-to-peertraining on the subject and August willfeature shop specific training.

“Overall the class is good, very infor-mative, but I would like to see more timespent on the rigging portion. In machinemaintenance, rigging is the most importantpart when removing/installing parts orspindles on machines.”

IAM/Boeing Joint Programs will con-tinue to strive to develop other such train-ing to meet the needs of our members.

As a result, a job safety analysis has been written,which put in place a process and check list before anysuch operation is started in the future. This was espe-cially important since this type of work is usually doneon weekends and requires communication betweentooling, crane operators and other employees involved.

The Everett Site Committee is submitting John for aGovernor’s Lifesaving Award for his efforts.

Every day 751 members who drive a forklift atBoeing demonstrate their skills and awareness for safety.On Saturday, June 10, seventeen members turned out totake part in the Boeing internal forklift rodeo to selectthe team to represent Boeing at the regional competi-tion.

The rodeo provided a stage to showcase their drivingskills. The event tested each driver’s efficiency withforklift operations, safety knowledge, and expertiseincluding negotiating an extremely tight and compli-cated course, load handling, backing up and maintain-ing a safe and efficient speed throughout. This year’scourse offered additional challenges, includingmanuevering the course forward and backward with anegg balanced on top of a construction cone and movingan oversized pipe through a tricky obstacle course.Besides testing their skills, participants must also battlethe clock.

The top eight participants, who will move on to theregional competition and comprise the Boeing teamare: Mike McAllister, Tim Eacrett, Doug Graham,Mike Weinman, Rob Jansen, Joe Henry, Toby Will-

iams and Theresa Doern.While only the top eight move up, all 17 competitors

were winners by demonstrating their competitive spiritand taking part in the event. Each participant should becommended on their accomplishment and recognized

for their contribution to workplace safety.Day in and day out they ensure the work-place is safe while moving various loadsthroughout the factory. Others driverssharing their skills at the event included:Jim Mercer, Jerry Wallin, John Scott,Charles David, Cedric Daniels, MikePolenski, Todd Ruthruff, Steve Barber,and Gary Neubaum.

While forklifts can be very dangerousto operate, these members demonstratedtheir comprehensive knowledge of notonly the machine, but the safety proce-dures associated with their jobs.

M e m b e r sclearly understoodthat with the sky-rocketing medicalcosts nationwide,keeping health carebenefits at the 2002level was a win –84 percent indi-cated it was a victory. Even though healthcare remains a top issue, only half of thoseresponding were interested in getting addi-tional training on medical care.

The survey showed members realize theUnion must be involved in political action –especially when it comes to protecting pen-sion plans. Too many companies have maderecent announcements to either terminate orfreeze their pension plans. Members over-whelmingly see the need for legislative ac-tion as added protection for their pension.

When asked for the area of the contract theyare most satisfied with, the Company’s with-drawal of takeaway proposals took 43.9 per-cent, followed by medical which garnered 23

percent. Pensions, team leader and wages werethe areas members were least satisfied with.

Members believe the Company could dobetter for the people who have made it suc-

cessful and will be pre-paring early for thenext round of bargain-ing. In fact, the Unionis already beginning toput together a strategyand communicationplan for the 2008 con-tract. This survey wasjust the first in many to

get members involved in the Union.A separate comments page asked members

how the Union could improve on communica-tion, strike preparation, membership involve-ment, union leadership, as well as asking whatwas done well in negotiations and the strike.The comments page also gave members anopportunity to voice ideas, concerns, opinionsor other views they might want to share.

“If members took the time to write a com-ment, we know it is important to that personand made sure to read through their input,”added Blondin.

Many members asked questions about theevents leading to the final offer, which wasratified by the members September 29.

Here is a brief review of the timeline ofthe final week, which shows things hap-pened quickly. Union gets call asking tomeet in Washinton DC with Boeing andto have former Congressman RichardGephardt act as a mediator.

• Sept. 22 - Union leaders fly to thenation’s capitol.

• Sept. 23 - Negotiators met for avery long day and traded numerousproposals across the table.

• Sept. 24 - Union negotiators preparesummary and recommendation to presentto members. Continued to talk with Com-pany officials to iron out details.

• Sept. 25 - Early Sunday morning,Business Week reports all details ofmeeting and proposal.

• Sept. 25 - Sunday Afternoon - Unionsends out e-mail to members, posts infor-mation and has printed summaries avail-able. (NOTE: The Union had planned torelease the information directly to themembers before holding a press confer-ence; however, the reporter somehow gotthe details and released them before wecould send out the information.)

• Sept. 26-29 - Summaries were avail-able for members to review. Mediadoes numerous stories on the proposal.

on September 23, no one knew if it wouldproduce a potential offer. Announcingthe meeting before it occurred wouldonly have resulted in the news mediahovering outside the meeting place try-ing to be the first to get the story. Thatwould have made it difficult to havemeaningful talks. The Union’s goal wasto resolve the strike and get the bestpossible settlement. Union leaders didnot want to give members false expecta-tions if the meeting did not go well.

When Union negotiators decide theirrecommendation it is based on what is inthe best interests of all 18,000+ Unionmembers and their families who havebeen goingwithout a pay-check. It is atough deci-sion, but onethat must bemade.

In the end, it is our members whodecided on the contract, and 80 percentsaid yes to this offer, which concludedthe strike.

Was it a perfect contract? No, but ittouched on every major issue membershad identified, and all takeaways werewithdrawn.

Since the strike ended, Boeing saleshave taken off and rates are projected toincrease – meaning good news for ourmembers that will hopefully translateinto more at the bargaining table in2008.

Boeing is having some of its best years. Wedeserved a pay raise. The fat cat execs aregetting fatter, and we are working harder.

With the 787 coming and so many orders, weneed to get more next contract.

The fifth annual “Flight for Sight” Fun Run held on Saturday, May20 raised over $11,000 for Guide Dogs of America. Thanks to theWomen’s Committee for their hard work in planning the event andadvertising at various fun runs throughout the region. Eighty bikes and over 100 riders roared downthe road for the fourth annual Puppy Putt Motor-cycle Ride to benefit Guide Dogs of America.Riders enjoyed the 88 mile route that included stopsat Green River Cycle, L&M Firehouse, Log CabinPub, Royal Bear Tavern, Hinshaw Honda and theBull Pen Tavern. Preliminary estimates showedover $10,000 was raised for Guide Dogs of Americaand money was still coming in from the event.

The state convention of the Alliancefor Retired Americans was held May31st in our Machinists Seattle Hall. StatePresident Art Boulton presided as theover 200 delegates (including about 20from our Retiree Club)participated in panel dis-cussions and consideredresolutions on Social Se-curity, Medicare and thedrug plan.

Congressman JimMcDermott spoke aboutthe importance of the fallelection and the need toclosely monitor candi-date stands on “senior”issues.

Panel members on“Health Care inAmerica,” stressed the fact that whilehealth care costs us more as a commu-nity in America, about twice as much asin other countries, the standard of carefor working Americans is lower in manyareas. Employers in our country are ei-ther requiring workers to pay a greater,sometimes much greater, share of healthcare costs or are eliminating employerpaid care entirely. Since 1993, coveragehas decreased from 60 percent of work-ers to now 30 percent and it continues todecrease.

Another panel spoke about the WhiteHouse Conference on Aging, which washeld in Washington DC last December.The Bush Administration made every ef-fort to get the delegates to endorse plans toprivatize Social Security, but the delegatesoverwhelmingly supported the present non-profit Social Security System and alsoMedicare. (This caused Bush to cancelplans to speak at the conference). Panelmembers noted this was significant as themajority of the delegates had been chosenby Republicans.

The state convention also adopted751’s resolution asking for cost-of-liv-ing in our pensions, support for the “singlepayer” medical plan, for major revisionsin the drug plan, and called for an end tothe Iraq war. Art Boulton was re-electedstate President and suggested per-capitadues (voluntary at this point) of onedollar per year was recommended tomeet the fact that our state Alliance willhave to become financially independentin the coming year. Delegates resolvedto continue to speak for seniors and towork for “senior-friendly” legislation.

Legislative Report: Carl Schartz re-ported on the Alliance for Retired Ameri-cans State Convention on May 31st. Wehad a good turnout and passed severalresolutions. Congressman Jim McDermottspoke about health care issues. We willwrite letters from this Club asking forchanges in the Medicare Prescription DrugBill so that Medicare will be allowed tonegotiate lower prices.

Carl expressed his concern over theIraq War and asked members to call for anend to the war that was entered into underfalse pretenses.

Anti-union commercials are runningon national TV. Working people shouldparticipate in determining conditions ofwork is the Union’s main message.

John Guevarra will be our delegate tothe National Alliance Convention in Wash-ington DC in September.

Members are asked to keep active andinformed as political races develop and besure to vote.

The old saying ‘it’s time to fish or cutbait’ is exactly what 751-member MikeHerman has done. Through hard work,Mike has reeled in the big one and turnedhis hobby into a second job. On May 17,he opened Herman’s Big Fish Bait andTackle Store – a full service bait andtackle shop, which includes referringpeople to a guide service for area rivers.

The store, located at View RidgePlaza, is in a prime Everett location nearForest Park at 307 W. Mukilteo Blvd,Everett (www.hermansbigfish.com or425-252-7920).

“We accommodate both the high-end and low-end fisherman – no matterwhat your budget, we can help,” Mikeexplained. “Customers tell us we havethe biggest selection they have ever seenof Berkley power bait and gulp products.If it isn’t here, we can custom order it orthey don’t make it.”

It all started a few years ago whenMike and his wife Michelle took a basic

rod building class at Greg’s Custom Rod.Before long, he began to share his talentsand build rods for others. His clientsregularly put in requests for additionalitems. Word of mouth quickly expandedhis customers until he had nearly filledhis garage with fishing, tackle and baitsupplies. When they had a garage sale aspart of Mukilteo Days, people suggestedthey open a tackle shop. After his dad Alretired in April, they decided to take thenext step and opened the store.

“Before we opened, people had to goto other side of Broadway for bait andtackle,” added Mike. “We are on the wayto the Mukilteo launch and some peoplego by on the way to the Everett launch.”

The store carries a wide variety ofproducts including crab pots, shrimpbuoys, steelhead gear, buzz bombs, spin-n-glow, flashers, tackle boxes, nets, rods,reels, Gamakatsu hooks, Eagleclawhooks, Lamiglas rods, Shakespeare rods,Okuma reels, Shimano reels, Pflueger

reels, Daiwa reels, Berkley power baitand gulp and other assorted bait andfishing tackle. The store is featured onthe Boeing Rod and Reel Club website,which has helped attract additional cus-tomers.

Over the years, he has caught every-

thing available on the West Coast fromMexico to Canada giving him lots ofexperience and fish tales to share.

Now, after Mike puts in a full day on the747 wing majors, he joins his father atHerman’s Big Fish Bait and Tackle. Thestore is open Monday through Saturday.

Throughout the Puget Sound region,751 members have helped make lifeeasier and better for those in our sur-rounding communities by volunteeringtheir time.

The Volunteer Recognition Program(VRP) banquet held on June 3rd honoredour members and their families who havedonated their time and participated inthese worthwhile projects. In the year2005, our members took part in 101different events – nearly two per week-end. A video showed a brief overview ofthe scope and nature of these projects,which included preparing and servingmeals at area missions 56 times and

building 24 wheelchair ramps/home re-pairs. We have also collected contribu-tions for the Salvation Army, assistedwith a fun run to benefit Guide Dogs ofAmerica, sorted food, cleaned up roads,and rallied with other unions - to namejust a few of the projects. The impact ofthese activities on the community cannotbe measured.

Representatives from United Waycomplimented 751 on its commitment tothe community. However, our membersare not the only ones giving back to thecommunity. Entire families are involved– teaching children the importance ofhelping others and volunteering theirtime. Awards were given in three cat-

egories to the top three volunteer mem-bers, Stewards and Officers (see chartleft).

The highlight of the banquet was thepresentation of the “True Trade UnionistAward” which is given to an individualwho demonstrates the characteristics ofa true trade unionist whether it be volun-teering or going beyond the call of dutyas a Union member. Garth Luark waspresented the “True Trade UnionistAward” for his tremendous volunteerefforts on community service and otherUnion programs. In 2005, he volunteered188 hours – an impressive number.

August is the month for members of the EmployeesCommunity Fund (ECF) of Puget Sound to apply to runfor a position on the board of trustees. Four positionswill be open in January.

Trustees administer the general fundto help the community. The employeeand manager must make a two-yearcommitment, the length of the trustees’tenure. Trustees carry out ECF businesspart-time on-hours, although some off-hours work isnecessary. Required business skills include organiza-tional skills, the ability to communicate verbally and inwriting, analytical skills, computer skills and the abilityto critically evaluate complex information.
