PLANNING ON PLAYING SOCCER IN COLLEGE?

IT’S COMPLICATED!NCAA… D1… D2… D3… NAIA…

Most high school athletes recognize the acronyms and know what they mean. What’s complicated is knowing the ins and outs of the rules and regulations of the college recruiting process, and what to expect once you’ve signed.

Heat United high school players were fortunate to find out more about how the college recruiting process works on Monday, March 3, when Northern Illinois University Men’s Head Soccer Coach Eric Luzzi and Women’s Head Soccer Coach John Ross gave a presentation at Union Special.

In addition to the logical things like the importance of a GPA, and the difference between an “official” and an “unofficial” college visit, the coaches touched on subjects

that sometimes get overlooked when it comes to finding the right fit for a college athlete: How often should you contact a coach? When can you contact a coach? When can a coach contact you? How important is input from a club or high school coach? Do you want to have a social life in college, or do you want soccer to be your social life? Is your preferred college on semesters, quarters or trimesters? How important is climate? Is there academic help readily available for student athletes who might need it? Are student athletes required to live on-campus, all together in the same housing? How important is coming home more than once or twice a year to visit Mom and Dad? How much playing time will you really get as a Freshman? Does an extremely talented player with a so-so GPA have an advantage over a “brainiac” who might not be as talented?

These questions and many others were answered in an entertaining two-hour session that provided insight into some of the real-world questions every prospective college athlete should consider before signing a letter of commitment.

TIME AND TALENTREMEMBER | All families are required to complete 6 hours of Time and Talent for the Club: 4 hours at the Summer Heat Challenge, and the remaining 2 hours at other times throughout the year. MEET IYSA VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR DAN LOPRIENO When Heat United Soccer Club was formed in 2004, Dan Loprieno was there to make sure the program started off on the right foot. “We started out with all parents coaching,” said Dan, one of the original organizers of the program.

And although his background is in wrestling (see sidebar), Loprieno has been a driving force behind the growth of soccer in the Northwest suburbs during his time with Heat United Soccer Club. His dedication to the game and the commitment to the Heat contributed to Loprieno being named an Illinois Youth Soccer Association Volunteer of the Year for 2013.

A former president of the club, he is currently serving as vice president, coach and Mr Fix-It, which includes doing everything from lining fields to moving goals and cutting grass. Dan’s handiwork includes assembling the new trophy displays at the east end of the indoor practice field at Union Special.

Oh... add tournament director to the list of Dan’s accomplishments. “We’re not really training to win,” says Loprieno. “We’re training to develop soccer players… and when you do that, one of the by-products is that you win a lot.” As Heat United got larger, the club started attending more tournaments, seeing higher

levels of competition. The success in those tournaments prompted Loprieno to pursue his idea of Heat United hosting a tournament on its home fields. 2014 will mark the third year that the club has hosted the Summer Heat Challenge. The second annual tournament saw significant growth from the first, and this year’s tournament, slated to be held from August 15 – 17, promises to be even larger, with many of last year’s teams already committed to attend.

Dan is currently head wresting coach and a professor of Mathematics at Harper College,

where he started teaching in the fall of 1991. He lives in Algonquin with his wife, Heidi, and their three children: Haley, Delaney and Luke.

Success on the MatsIn his 14 seasons as head wrestling coach at Harper College, Loprieno’s teams have won three national championships, in 2001, 2006 and 2010. Along with three titles, Loprieno’s teams have finished second in the nation three times, third in the nation twice and fourth in the nation once. In addition, Loprieno has guided the Harper Hawks to ten Regional titles and runners-up in the region twice.

Under Loprieno, the Hawks have been the top non-scholarship school at the national meet three times. Loprieno has also coached four national champions: Josh Kratovil at 141, Mike Rio at 149, PJ Starnes at 157 and Curtis Blaydes in the heavyweight division.

In 2011-12, Loprieno was named Coach of the Year. His team included ten national qualifiers for the national meet, an individual national champion (Blaydes), three All-Americans (Blaydes, Charles Argue and Chris Gonzalez) and 11 members of the Academic All-Conference team.

Loprieno was inducted in the NJCAA Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2008. He was the NJCAA Wrestling Man of the Year in 2009, and in 2010 Coach Loprieno was inducted into the NJCAA Region IV Hall of Fame.

NEW TIME AND TALENT OPPORTUNITY! Heat United Soccer Club Scholarship CommitteeHeat United is looking for a few good men (and women) to serve on a committee that will establish the criteria, review applications and award a $500 scholarship to both a graduating Senior boy and graduating Senior girl Heat United player who will be continuing his or her soccer career at the college level. To avoid any conflict of interest, we ask that the committee is made up of 3 or 5 parents with players that will NOT be eligible for the scholarship while they are seated on the committee. If this sounds like a good fit, contact Time & Talent Coordinator Genevieve Hochwarter to find out more.

HUNTLEY YOUTH SPORTS ORGANIZATION is a not-for-profit group of local volunteers dedicated to the development and enrichment of youth sports teams within the village of Huntley and Huntley Park District boundaries. Founded in 1999, the HYSO has raised and donated over $150,000 to local youth sports teams through local event fundraisers and with the support of area volunteers. Heat United

Soccer Club was the beneficiary of a $5000 donation that was used for our indoor soccer field at Union Special.

Upcoming fundraisers include the HYSO 10th Annual RUN THRU THE SUN that will be held at 7am on Sunday, June 1, 2014. The race includes both 5k and 10k courses that take runners through Del Webb, Sun City neighborhoods which feature beautiful landscapes, wide streets, good pavement and minimal traffic. It features a USATF certified 5k and 10k race course (5k: IL-12078-JW, 10K: IL-12077-JW) with bib chip timing for instant, accurate results. The Run thru the Sun includes a1-mile run and 100 meter dash geared specifically towards children. FREE post race entry to Stingray Bay Aquatic Center for all participants and their families! In addition to the Run thru the Sun, the HYSO hosts an annual golf outing in August at Pinecrest Golf Club in Huntley. To learn more about the HYSO, visit www.huntleyyouthsports.org.
