Union Phone Bank to fight civil service changes

This is the body of an email I received from APT over the weekend, as a gov't worker) Dear AFT-Wisconsin members, I'm writing to let you know about some great opportunities for solidarity coming up in Madison and Milwaukee - cross-union action to protect Wisconsin's civil service system, and a South Central Federation of Labor/School for Workers session on Building Workplace Power in Madison. You've probably heard about the proposed attacks on our state civil service system, which members of the AFT- Wisconsin State Employee Council have warned will introduce more corruption into state government and make it harder to bring qualified, dedicated workers into state service. The Wisconsin AFL-CIO has organized phone banks in Madison and Milwaukee to contact voters, talk about why civil service is important for good government, and connect them with legislators to send the message that state service shouldn't be for sale. Phone banks will be held on Monday, October 5 in Milwaukee (WI AFL-CIO, 6333 W. Bluemound Rd.) and Madison (Madison Labor Temple, 1602 S. Park St. #212) from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. to protect Wisconsin's tradition of civil service. Contact Emily Mueller in Milwaukee at [email protected] , or Wendy Strout in Madison at [email protected] with questions or to RSVP. On Tuesday, October 6, the Senate Committee on Labor and Government Reform will hold a public hearing on the civil service bill. The hearing will begin at 8:30 a.m. in room 411S of the Capitol, and will continue until 6:00 p.m. with a recess between 11:50 and 2:00. If you're able, please share your testimony about why this bill is bad for Wisconsin. (If you're unable to testify, you can still register against the bill on that date.)
