Greetings to All of Our Members: I want to take this opportunity to give a heartfelt “Thank You” to all of our volun- teers who with their generosity of time and abilities have made the Union County Sportsmen’s Club the wonderful facility it is today. We hear it time and time again from visitors to our facility, how much they admire what we have, what we do and how friendly we are here. Our volun- teers and our members make it all hap- pen. Since our Spring Newsletter we have had a very hot and dry summer but that is sort of becoming the norm isn’t it? Just think about the drought in the mid-west and we really came through it quite well I guess. Here at the Club, our kitchen remodel- ing has been completed including a new outdoor freezer, some new equipment, new floor plan and new floor. Our kitchen is ready for many years of good service and will enable us to continue to deliver a great product. We try hard to keep our menu in line with what our customers want but we really would like to hear from you as to what you would like to see on the menu that we don’t have now and comments on how we can continue to improve our service. From the French Fries in the Bar Side to the Steaks in the Dining Room, we want to deliver food that you will drive to the “West End” to enjoy. This year’s Fishing Derby was another success. I think everyone caught some- thing and some went home with trout that their family and friends could only dream about. Thanks to everyone who made the day a success. June 23rd was the date of our Second Annual U.C.S.C. & A.B.A.T.E. Gun Raffle and Picnic. Last year’s event was a suc- cess and we were hop- ing to match that this with this year’s event. Wow! Did we ever have a great event! Thanks to all of you who sup- ported the event by purchasing tickets that we mailed to you and then again at the Club. We had around 1,700 folks attending and indeed had a very successful event. A Gun Safe was raffled off and prizes were awarded to many of you. Like I heard someone say, “Where else but in the U.S.A. can you get all you can eat and drink and win a gun for $10?” The weath- er could not have been better and the gathering of that many people came off without a hitch. Thank You! We are going to do it again next year so mark your cal- endars. Be sure to visit our website at www.ucsc- pa.com to keep abreast of happenings at your Club. There is a lot of information on the site. Want to know the weather in Weikert, the condition of Penns Creek or coming events? With a visit to our site you can find that information and so much more. All is not well in one area of the Club however. The Hunter Safety Course was cancelled this year because of lack of stu- dents. It is a symptom of our times that fewer youth are interested in or provided the interest to the enjoyment of the out- doors that is found with hunting in Pennsylvania. If we have an increase in interest we will again provide the course. Please keep us informed if you know of potential participants. The Union County Sportsmen’s Club along Penns Creek. It is very relaxing. We will be expanding the area in the spring. It has two pic- nic tables and two fire rims. Remember, you must be a member to camp or pitch a tent. It is only $5 a night per tent. Come and enjoy. Hunter’s Safety Course: We will no longer host the Hunter’s Safety Course due to lack of interest. Hunting license sales are decreasing and the younger generation has other inter- ests and is no longer interested in hunting. Annual Shareholders Meeting was held onSaturday, July l4th (the first Saturday after thesecond Monday). Attendance was good with allchairs and tables filled by Shareholders. Withthe Election and no nominations from the floor, the Officers and Trustees of 2011 were retainedfor 2012. We on the Board truly appreciate yourconfidence and will continue to do our level bestto make the best decisions for the Club. Therewere several suggestions from the floor and wewill give them all due consideration. It was niceto not have to turn off the air-conditioners inorder to hear ourselves think! This is the secondyear we enjoyed this and that means our geot-hermal system is working well. The system runsso quietly and so well that it is easy to overlookthe job that it does.I’ll conclude my comments by again thanking

all of you for all that you do. Thanks to ouremployees our volunteers, members and guests.Enjoy what is left of summer and enjoy a beau-tiful fall and winter. Have a successful and safehunting season and we’ll see you at the Club.

TROUT NURSERY NEWSCharlie Klauger, Nursery Mgr. It is again time for the fall

Newsletter. The weatherthought about cooling, butmust have realized it was tooearly and after a couple ofdays it warmed up again tothe eighties. Cool nights are

here again and WELCOMED, to cool the waterin the raceway for our fish. The oxygen in thecooler water helps the fish to feed more aggres-sively and add flesh to go into winter. We bought and stocked 3,500 fish in October

last year. That was purchased by your club forthe last seven years. Our trout raised at the club were stocked on

March 27th and May 16th. We did a split stock-ing this year but we may not continue to do so.All fish were 11.5 inches with 30 hold over’s 14to 17 inches. These remained after the chil-dren's fishing derby. The Derby was well attend-ed again with children having a great time. Thanks to Tim Zimmerman’s organization. In 2010 we received a grant from the co-op

nursery to surround the raceways with con-crete. This is now completed with some terrac-ing around the lower raceway. This was donethat topsoil could be added to reduce the inclinefor safer walking during inclement weather. Theconcrete walkways will aid in snow removalfrom the raceway lids, grass intrusion in sum-mer, and safer walking area while feeding thefish. Thank you co-op nursery, Bear, andgrounds committee and all who helped this tocompletion. This is the fourth grant approved bythe co-op.Our new fingerlings arrived June 2nd and we

had a week to clean the raceways between thechildren's fishing derby and their arrival. Allmaintenance was completed during this weekwith lots of helpers. With our new feeding schedule for 2013, we

will have 13 feeders, stockers and other clean-ing volunteers to keep our fish healthy. Thisyear we have had a problem with a bacteria callICK. We lost 500 fish but caught it early enoughto medicate and save the remaining fish. Thanks again to our nursery partners for sup-plying themedication. In May we hosted a tour for The Lower Penns

Creek Water Shed Association and answered allof their questions and then had lunch at theclub.Your club has supported the fish program for

the last eight years with supplying fish food andother expenses. They also buy the trout for thefishing derby, fall stocking, and the pond. Please continue to buy the FISH BUTTONSwhich helps to support the program.Today we have a 4-foot brown trout that was

carved out of a tree stump next to the raceway. This was done by Bernie Schmader, an out-doorsman and animal activist. It still needssome preservation against insects. It looks greatthank you Bernie and all who help the club bethe success story it really is.

UNION COUNTY MUZZLELOADER’S CLUBMark Wehr

The Union County Muzzleloader Club con-tinues to be a small but active group of blackpowder shooters, campers and re-enactors. Wehave 21 members. Current officers are: MarkWehr – President 966-2304; Cliff Bowersox –Vice President 713-5431; Steve Pletcher –Secretary/Treasurer 966-0649. We would wel-come any questions or comments about ourclub. Except for three weekend events we have

monthly shoots on the first Sunday of eachmonth except May. In May we do a Saturdayshoot which is the second Saturday. Ourmonthly shoots start at 9:00am and wind uparound noon unless there is a really goodturnout then shooting may continue into theafternoon. Shoots may be steel silhouettes, awoodswalk, paper, or novelty targets. We shootmuzzleloaders with open iron sights of eitherflint or percussion ignition styled on pre-1840rifles. Although many club members do dressin period attire it is not required. Club mem-bership is not required to participate in any ofour shoots. We welcome interested muzzleload-ers as new members. Our three weekend events consist of the

Frozen Toe shoot the first weekend of March, the June Invitational, and our Rifle Frolic onLabor Day weekend. The Frozen Toe includescamping for any hardy soles and a variety ofshooting matches. The June Invitational is aperiod correct event for 18th century re-enac-

tors. It is run by Steve Pletcher and DaveAucker. Give either of them a call if you havequestions or interest in this event. Our biggestevent is the Rifle Frolic over Labor Day week-end. We just concluded this year’s event. There

were 52 shooters and 24 camps. All of ourshooting facilities were used during the week-end; woodswalk, silhouettes and paper targetswere shot. Also, we had primitive archery andtomahawk throwing. We have primitive andmodern camping areas. The primitive campingarea takes a step back in time to 18th and early19th century time period. Our club hosts thisevent for muzzleloaders from other clubsaround the state. Also, day shooters are wel-come as well as visitors who just want to seewhat burning black powder is all about. The muzzleloader club is grateful for the facil-ity the Union County Sportsman Club providesfor our use. Come join us at one of our shootsand share in the sport of muzzleloading.

The children participating in this year’sderby arrived, rods and bait in hand, and leftwith as many fish as they could catch and theirparents were willing to clean and prepare. TheClub purchased and stocked over 300 troutranging from nine to thirteen inches in size, along with several trophy sized fish. The derbywas held in the creek and raceway immediatelynext to the Club’s parking lot, and is part of theClub’s renowned Trout Program. Among otherthings, this program encourages our youth tobecome engaged in outdoor sporting activities, promotes the responsible stewardship of ourstreams and each year raises fingerling trout forrelease into Penn’s Creek. This is all made pos-sible by those of you who have purchased UnionCounty Sportsmen’s Club Trout StockingProgram buttons and through the strong sup-port of the Club’s Trustees. This event took a lot of help and planning

and so many people graciously contributed theirtime and talents to insure that the childrenwould have a positive, memorable experienceand leave our Club eager to return. There are somany people to thank for the success of thisyear's event, and it’s not possible to mentioneveryone who lent a hand. But certainly, a hugethanks goes to Charlie Klauger and LynneLowry for arranging the purchase and deliveryof the trout, Baker Hollow Taxidermy inMifflinburg who kindly donated a fish mount forthe largest trout caught, even though no verifiedtrophy trout were presented this year. Jack’sMountain Riders, ABATE of Pennsylvania, notonly donated a lot of very cool fishing rods, tackle boxes and nets as door prizes, but alsolent a huge hand in organizing and assisting theday of the event. It looked like they had just asmuch fun as the kids, and many, many thanksare directed to them for their generous help. Avery special thanks goes out to Leon Carvell andthe good folks at McClure’s Veterans SwimmingPool who donated fishing rods as door prizes forthe children. And to those who registered thechildren, kept everyone fed, baited hooks, untangled lines, ferried ice, sold trout buttons, and set up and removed sand bags - thank you! This day would not be a success without yourhelp. It was again a great feeling to be a part of

this year’s event; to see our Club actively pro-mote sportsmanship and to actively engage ourfuture Club members, to hear the giggles andsee the smiles on little faces is something thatwill not be forgotten and is certainly something

that all the Club’s members can be proud of.The tradition will continue next year, with thedate of May 18, 2013 selected for the EighthAnnual Children's Fishing Derby. Like thisyear’s event, the Derby will be open to all chil-dren 10 years of age and under. And, there justmight be a few surprises in store for next year’sDerby…Stay tuned for more details in the Spring

newsletter, and until then - please continue topractice and encourage others to “catch andrelease.”

GAME COMMISSION REPORTDirk B Remensnyder, WCO

3-60-1 • Union Co.As another hunting season approaches,

sportsmen around the Commonwealth arestarting to gear up for it. Sporting goods storesare offering sales on equipment, hunting licens-es are being purchased, antlerless license appli-cations have been filled out and sent in, newhunting gear is purchased and old gear is dust-ed off, and preseason scouting and spotlightingactivity is starting to increase. With all thiscomes a responsibility from the sportsmen to sitdown and take the time to read your new hunt-ing digest and understand any changes thathave been implemented since last season. A brief highlight on some of the changes are:• Hunters and Trappers are no longer

required to display licenses.• Adult hunters may transfer a fall turkey

tag to a mentored youth hunter.• WMU 2G and 4D are open to Fisher trap-

ping.• Permits are now required for individuals

who do not possess a valid PA Hunting or furtaking license to use Game Lands shootingranges. A permitted person is allowed oneguest.

Reports coming in from sportsmen for theupcoming hunting season seem very encourag-ing for Union County. Small game huntersshould be highly successful in their pursuit forrabbits and squirrel. Pheasants have beenreported being seen throughout the summerand successful chick hatches have been seen.Their population will be complemented with thePGC’s and the Union County Sportsmen Club’sstocking programs. Turkey hunters should haveno problem locating a flock. On a positive notesportsmen report seeing more deer than in past

years and farmers working their fields havereported seeing more fawns this year.Numerous trail cam pictures have been shownto me of some exceptionally large racked bucks. Finally, Bear hunters take note that Unioncounty is again near the tops of the NorthCentral region in bear complaints received thisyear. Bear are everywhere with some exception-ally large ones that have been seen and onesthat I have trapped. A tip for bear hunters isdon’t discount hunting in small woodlots nearfields as some bear will be staying near thesefood sources. There are quite a few 4-600 poundBear running around Union County. The Game Commission has a new class of

Cadets training in the academy and the Cadetswill be on field training assignment with sea-soned field training officers throughout thehunting season, many of you will have theopportunity to meet some of these Cadets atclub meetings or public events. On a final noteplease be sure of your target while hunting. Weexperienced a few hunting related shooting inci-dents three seasons ago in and around UnionCounty, which are never fun to investigate andprove to be very traumatic to all involved. It ismy hope each and every one of you have anenjoyable, successful and safe hunting seasonthis year and I look forward to meeting you andlistening to your hunting stories.
