In order to enhance agriculturalproductivity and profitability, guarantee food security and

reduce poverty in the country, alecturer in the Faculty ofAgriculture,University of Ilorin, Dr. (Mrs.)Oluyemisi Fawole, has canvassedthe development of gender specificpolicies and services that aredesigned for women within theagricultural value chains.

Dr. Fawole, who is also theAg. Head of the Department ofAgronomy, made this submissionlast Wednesday (May 4, 2016) at theAfrican Women in AgriculturalResea rch and Deve lopmen t(AWARD) Role Modelling Event, which took place at the Faculty ofAgriculture Lecture Theatre.

Presenting a seminar papertitled “Advancing Women inAgriculture: Roles of Education andResearch”, the Agronomist observedthat despite the significant roles andcontributions of women in theagricultural sector, they areconfronted with socio-economiccons t ra in t s tha t l imi t the i rproductivity. These constraints, according to her, include limitedaccess to the essential elements offarming, resources and credit, information and technology, education and training, amongothers.

Dr. Fawole pointed out thatalthough “women constitute a largeportion of the farming population, women's possibilities in agriculture

are hindered by formal and traditionalrules. Existing evidence from small-scale studies across the continentd o c u m e n t s t h e n u m e r o u sdisadvantages that women face inaccessing the same resources, training, markets and opportunities asmen.” All of these, she noted, hadnegative effects on agriculturalproductivity.

In order to address thesedisparities, the 2015 AWARD Fellowthen advocated the application ofeducation and gender responsiveresearch to tackle “the barriers thathold back the productivity of femalefarmers which could enhance genderequality and usher in a broadereconomic growth.”

“Education will make womenmore equipped and able to competewith men to take advantage of thebetter income-earning opportunities”,she stressed, adding that, “to increasethe productivity of female farmers, gender responsive research that goesbeyond the farming system andexamines the entire food value chainis required.”

Earl ier in his openingremarks, the Vice-Chancellor of theU n i v e r s i t y o f I l o r i n , P r o f .AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), whowas represented on the occasion bythe Deputy Vice-Chancel lor,R e s e a r c h , Te c h n o l o g y a n dInnovation, Prof. Gabriel Olatunji,expressed delight at the substantialnumber of female academics withinthe University, saying the event was

put up to show “to the world whatwomen can do and do better.”

According to him, “theAfrican agricultural sector mustincrease its responsiveness to theneeds and contributions of women ifit is to be effective and sustainable. Itis believed that cultivation of highpotential African women scientistswill prove vital in addressing urgentneeds of smallholder farmers andthat solutions will be achieved withthe full scientific community menand women working together. TheUniversity management looksforward to many more AWARDFellows from among the femaleacademic staff seated here today.”

In his remarks, the Director,Academic Planning Unit, Prof. O.A.Omotesho said, “AWARD is a gamechanger in empowering Africanwomen scientists to accelerateagricultural development in thecontinent”, adding that, “today in theFaculty of Agriculture, we havemade significant progress in terms ofhaving about 30 female academicstaff; for a long time, it was just oneor two.”

“AWARD is out to changethe situation and empower women tocontribute more to the process ofagr icul tural development inAfrica…I want us to be able to raisemany more AWARD fellows fromamong the many academic staff thatwe have here. It is a very competitiveprocess but we can do it”, he said.

The don called for theinclusion of ICT knowledge and skillsin the curricula of all subjects taughtby Science teachers and educators, inaddition to what students are taught intheir ICT courses.

TO YOU!

Dry Eyes?If you suffer from dry eyes, up your seafood intake. Sea foods like salmon, sardines, and mackerel contain

omega-3 fatty acids, which the body uses to produce tears, among other things. Research suggests that people

who consume higher amounts of these fats are less likely to have dry eyes.

A husband comes home from Church, greets his wife, lifts her up and carries her around the house. The wife isso surprised and excited! She asked with smiles, “Did the Pastor preach on being romantic today?” Out ofbreath the husband replies, “No, he said we must carry our burdens…”

Oftentimes, I get confounded by the prevalence ofnauseating hypocrisy among the majority of people inour clime. Given the abhorrence of this moral

deficiency in both Islamic and Christian moral codes, I oftenwonder if a good number of us will qualify for the divinesalvation hereafter without an amnesty.Amajority of us contrivea false appearance of virtue while we conceal our real self. Moreoften, a majority of us find it easier to choose appearance overreality. As a result of what psychologists consider as cognitivebiases and distortions, we effortlessly perceive and condemnfaults in others while we fail to perceive and condemn our ownfaults and frailties. In other words, we might be sometimes fairlyaccurate in our perception of others, but we are normallydeliberately inaccurate in the perception of ourselves. In ourself-serving bias, we think highly of ourselves, thinking that weare the best, and that we only can do things the best way.

Of course, it is easier to put up a reputation for fairnessthan to be fair. But I do wonder oftentimes why the majority ofhuman beings are inclined to play the game of life in aMachiavellian way – survival at all costs. In our inclination forself-deception, we fail to get real evidence, rather thanfabrications, for our decision or position, while we even failmuch more to get better evidence for opposing position ordecision. In our Machiavellian nature, it is always easy for us toeffortlessly justify our selfish acts, with pseudo evidence, whilewe maintain the deceptive posture or illusion that we are betterthan others.

The above was a series of deep meditation that wereinspired in me by the dialogue/ conversations among three donsin a University I visited recently after the ugly incidence of twoweeks ago that almost disrupted the peace on our campus. Theconversations go thus:

: I learnt that National ASUU was successful inconducting an election that has now brought in a much morevibrantASUU executive at the University of Ilorin

: For where? The University lecturers resisted what theyconsidered as an attempt to impose some individuals on them.

: Are you sure the resistance was not orchestrated by theUniversityAdministration?

: Not all. I even learnt that if not for the UniversityAdministration that in its magnanimity permitted the election tohold, there would have been a violent brawl on the campus onthat day. I learnt that the University Vice-Chancellor is a paragonof simplicity and humility. While he was clearly in support ofintegration, he did not want the kind of imposition that wasintended that day- imposition that was aimed at disrupting thepeace of the University

: But I learnt that it is the same VC that the individuals thatwere elected that day as the new executive wanted to tackle. They claimed that they could make him perform better through amore radical unionism.

: I think they got it wrong. To me, we must be honest withourselves. If these guys wanted to take back the leadership of theunion at the University, it should not be for a fabricated reason ofnon- performance on the part of at least the last twoadministrations in the University. Unfortunately, the guys still

believe in the obsolete model of struggle that is causing a lot ofhavoc to the stability of other universities in Nigeria. What is invogue now, and which must be encouraged, is intellectualengagement, rather than taking pride in confrontations.

: I even learnt that the University Administration is notaverse to such radical unionism only that the University hassuccessfully laid a structure for achieving persistently a fairlyacceptable level of welfarism both for students and staff, whichmakes radical agitations unnecessary at the University

: How do you mean it? A lot of staff of the Universitycomplains silently about poor welfarism, and this is what thenew guys think they can fight against.

: I still want to say it that the new guys and the staff yousaid that are complaining silently are getting it wrong. I don'tthink they can have it better in any other University. Do youknow that it is the only University that has the most reliable, regular and consistent process for promoting or appointingProfessors? At the University, you are promoted to ProfessorCadre once you adequately satisfy the strident but attainablerequirements. This is a University where you don't need to visitany religious marauders when you papers are sent out forassessment because you are sure that the VC is not hiding thepapers in his office. Then, you all know that many universitieshave been paying half or 90% of their staff salaries since Januarythis year because they have not been getting enough from theGovernment. The same VC the guys are saying is notperforming to their desired level has been paying his staff's fullsalaries. How he has been doing this is a myth to me, but it isunfair if his staff do not appreciate this because I know how wefeel here with the non- payment of our full salaries.

: But I don't think welfarism ends with the payment ofsalary and promotion as at when due. It also entails non-infringement of certain rights.

: What right are you talking about? What kind of rightexists beside your fulfillment in getting to the top of your careeras at when due, and paying your salary as at when due. And forstudents, they do not have any cause to disrupt the peace in theUniversity because they are given minimum comfort they needto study. Unlike in many universities where students go onrampage because there is no water or light on campus, at theUniversity of Ilorin, the Administration makes sure suchessentials are not out of supply for too long. This is why theUniversity has been able to achieve rare persistent stability formore than 15 years

: I think this is what the University is jealously trying toprotect by not allowing radical unionism on the campus

: But is that not worthy of being guided much morejealously? To me, it really worth the pains. We are all justdeceiving ourselves. Inside us, we want the University to sustainthe stability so that we can have a place we can send our ownchildren to for undisrupted studies although we pretend as if theUniversity is a non-conformist.

: But there is a difference between academic stability andacademic excellence

: My good brother, let us leave the intellectual discussion

on that for some other days.
