(Contd. from front page)

Prof. Oladosu pointed out that the leaders shouldhave it at the back of their minds that their days ingovernment are limited and they should never scheme toperpetuate themselves in office.

And to the generality of the people at large, theChief Imam urged a change of attitude, saying that Godwould not change the condition of a people until theychange their bad ways.

I

ested thatindividuals found guilty of vices and acts of impunity, which thwart good governance, should be made to face thefull wrath of the appropriate law.

Prof. Oladosu also recommended that“Politicians, government officials and the public shouldbe given proper orientation and be sensitised to theingredients of good governance”. He frowned at what hecalled “the omission of God” by Nigerian leaders in thescheme of things and governance processes, saying thatthis is the root of most problems because “the fear of Godis the beginning of wisdom”.

The don said that leaders in the country, who takeoath of office, should learn to be honest, faithful, sincereand stop messing up the system as well as themselves.

He said, “To swear with the Holy Books withoutcommitment is an act of betrayal and a capital offence thatattracts the wrath of Allah! The first 50 years of ourindependence witnessed 14 regimes under Muslim andChristian leaders who took their oath of office using eitherthe Holy Quran or the Holy Bible.Yet, most of them endedup betraying their faith. This is a very dangerous omenthat should not be allowed to rear its head any more in thegovernance of this country because it only leads toperdition and total ruin.”

While proposing what the political atmosphereshould be like in the next 50 years, Prof. Oladosu urgedNigerians not to allow the election of politicians who arerenowned thieves and rogues and are ready to empty thetreasury, enrich themselves, and damn the consequencesof whatever becomes of the country. He added thatdismissed officers, as well as dubious and fraudulentcharacters should no longer be allowed to play anyleadership role in the governance of the country.

Prof. Oladosu described as unfortunate thesituation whereby the laudable vision of the country's

founding fathers that was capable of transforming it to ahighly developed nation and one of the greatest worldeconomic and political powers remains a mirage evenup till today.

He said that governance should, therefore, becharacterised by the ideals of truthfulness, integrity, transparency, accountability, kindness, equity, fairness, and justice as explained in the Quran ,verse 134 and verse 9.

Earlier in his address, the Vice-Chancellor of theUniversity of Ilorin, Prof.AbdulGaniyuAmbali (OON),who appreciated the effort of the Unilorin MuslimCommunity in promoting the core value of theUniversity, charged Muslims in the country to alwaysabide by Allah's dictates to have endless bliss in thisworld and hereafter.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the occasion,Prof. Bayo Lawal, who commended the lecturer, decried the existing gap between the activities ofMuslims in the country and the dictates of Islam, whichhe said is affecting the growth of the religion.

While welcoming guests to the lecture, theChairman of the Unilorin Muslim Community, Prof. B.L. Adeleke, said that the topic was strategically chosenlooking at the just concluded transition in the countrywith the level of expectations from all and sundry.

Prof. Adeleke said, “It is evident from our pastexperience in Nigeria that our problem as a nation canbe largely attributed to lack of good governance,”pointing out that this prompted the choice of the lecturetopic to dissect the perspectives of Islam with respect togood governance.

Among the dignitaries at the event were past andpresent executive members of the Unilorin MuslimCommunity, the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of theFountain University, Osogbo, Prof. O. B. Oloyede;

theDirector of the Centre for Ilorin Studies, Prof. Z. I.Oseni .

Also in attendance were the wife of the Vice-Chancellor, University of Ilorin, Dr. (Mrs.) HassanatAmbali, the Amirah, Unilorin Muslim Ladies Circle,Dr. (Mrs.) Alabi, the first Grand Kadi of Kwara State ,Justice AbdulQuadri Orire, the first Makama of Ilorin,Alhaji Ibrahim Oniye and a host of others from withinthe University of Ilorin and Ilorin community.

Omoniyi tasks Nigerians on inter-religious harmony

The University Librarian, Dr. Joseph Omoniyi, hastasked Nigerians of all faiths to embrace inter-religious harmony.Dr. Omoniyi gave the charge in a chat with

last Wednesday (July 8, 2015) shortlyafter an inter-religious prayer session he organised for thequick recovery of some staff members of the institution, who are currently indisposed.

Pointing out that “we have only one God, whomwe pray to, whether you are a Muslim or a Christian”, theUniversity Librarian said that the orchestrated divisionbetween Christians and Muslims in the country was borneout of wickedness and ignorance.

Dr. Omoniyi said, “We don't have differences asfar as I am concerned, we are creating the differences. Weare doing this out of wickedness and ignorance becausewe do not understand how God works; otherwise there isno need. My message to all Nigerians is that we should seeone another as one product of theAlmighty God”.

The University Librarian said, “You cannot praywithout mentioning God's name and I believe in theIslamic tenet that a prayer is more potent when said in

or congregation and that is why I organised thisinter-religious prayer because it is more potent than a soloprayer. So, I cashed in on this. And for the Christian faith, the Bible says that if anybody is sick, let the elders cometogether and pray for him; so you can see the two faiths. They come together along this line and we should thenexplore that and cry to God to heal our colleagues.”

Dr. Omoniyi said, “I am a Christian and I believein the potency of prayer and I attended a Muslim school inKano. We also believe that there is nothing as powerful as

prayer. So, when you pray and you have faith, youbelieve that that thing which you are requesting fromGod is already granted. So for me, I believe we haveprayed now and those people we prayed for havereceived their healing. I am not a prophet or a seer but Iknow that if you pray and you have faith and the personyou are praying for also has faith, it will come to pass.”

The interfaith prayer session, which would be thefirst of its kind, held at the University Library and waswell attended by staff members who are adherents ofChristianity and the Islamic faith.

Dr. Omoniyi, who told the gathering that he wasinspired by God to organise the prayer session, explainedthat there was no problem that is not surmountable withprayers.

He said, “The Holy Scriptures attest to this thatwe should pray for the sick, you are in trouble, if you arein problem. And as we have just demonstrated againstpeople who are planning to destabilise the University, itis a problem on our hands and we as human beings, if weare trying to curb this and curb that and people are notresponding, then we subject the whole thing to God inprayers and God will answer us because He says: ‘seekand you shall find, ask and you will be given, knock andthe door will be opened unto you’. So my inspirationessentially is derivable from the scriptures.”

Among those at the prayer session were theDeputy Director, Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, and the Chaiman of the Non-Academic Staff Union ofUniversities and Allied Institutions (NASU), UnilorinChapter, Mrs. Olabisi FadekeAdesina.

What makes UNILORIN tick, by VC, othersContd. from Back page

three per semester each based on the offences ofassociation with external cult groups and examinationmalpractices

During the matriculation of the 2014/2015academic session, the Vice chancellor of the university,Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali, warned the new students tomake choices carefully as their choices could determinetheir future in the university.

“Although everyone with native wisdom andgood conscience knows what is right and wrong, manypeople still find themselves on thewrong lane,” he said.

More recently, speaking onthe expulsion of some students,Ambalisaid that it was not an easy decisionasking students to leave the institution. But it is one that is taken to protectits integrity, after serious consideration.

“Management usually feels verysad when it has to resort to asking peopleto leave, but all the same, the Universitywas established to build students that arefound worthy in character and learning.Despite their academic excellence if we feel thatcharacter-wise they have refused to be molded, we areleft with no choice than to tell them to leave.

“We have about 30,000 students. When parentssend their wards to study it means that their welfare isunder our care; which means we have to monitor all ofthem and if we find one of them as a threat, we often askthat person to go,” he said.

Ambali however explained that the severity ofthe offences varies, and that the university hardly expelsstudents for dress code offenses as there are other formsof punishment adopted for less serious offences. He alsosaid details of the offenses are not made public.

“The specific offences of the expelled studentsare always released to their parents or guardians but wetry as much as possible not to publicise these in the hopethat the punishment meted on them will not affect them intrying to further education elsewhere,” he said.

Speaking on the issue, the Deputy Director ofInformation (DDI), KunleAkogun said expulsion is not avindictive exercise at the university.

“There is nothing untoward about the expulsionof erring students at the University of Ilorin. It is not inany way vindictive, as it is a way of enforcing laid-downrules and regulation.

“As a matter of principle, the University of Ilorinhas zero tolerance for all anti-social behaviour likecultism, theft, and examination malpractices in all theirramifications. Other offences, which the University

frowns at, include indecent dressing, unkempt hair style, fighting on and off-campus, rudeness to constitutedauthorities, etc.

“And all students are aware of this because one ofthe first documents given to each matriculated student onresumption at the University is the Students' Handbook, which details all the dos and don'ts on the campus. Andonce a student signs and submits the Matriculation Oath,he has elected to abide by all the rules and regulations of

the school.”Akogun said students who runafoul of the university rules andr e g u l a t i o n s a r e p r o p e r l yarraigned before the StudentsDisciplinary Committee andgiven fair hearing. If convicted, they can also appeal to theUniversity Council, within 48days of the committee's sitting, ifthey feel unsatisfied with theSDC's decision. He described the number ofexpelled students as minimal and

not one that should generate undue concern.“Probably because of the general awareness of

this body of rules among our students and the attendantpenalties against default, the frequency of default isminimal. In view of this, the number of expelled studentsis quite negligible. But even at that, it is a step that theUniversity authority takes with great pains.

Akogun attributed the stability enjoyed in theuniversity to the level of discipline of the studentsbecause the institution places equal emphasis oncharacter as learning.

“This is why we enjoy an unparalleled harmonyand unprecedented academic stability here. This is whyparents will go to any length in making sure that theirwards gain admission to the University of Ilorin. And thisis why the University has consistently led the table ofmost subscribed university by admission seekers in thecountry for the third year running now,” he said.

For students who spoke on the issue with, the rules are not too difficult to follow.A student of the Department of Educational

Technology said the strict rules have engendereddiscipline and orderly behavior of students on campus.

For another 200-level student of Library andInformation Technology, the institution has the rules tothank for eliminating cultism on campus.

“Indeed, that word cultism is alien to many of theUniversity of Ilorin students as we are not aware of itsexistence here,” he said.

What makes UNILORIN tick, by VC, others

Many Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination(UTME) candidates prefer the University of Ilorin(UNILORIN). They believe that the university gives itsstudents the best. But, students must be disciplined tocomplete their programmes at the institution, reportsADEKUNLE JIMOH in Ilorin

any candidates prefer the University of Ilorin(UNILORIN) to other universities because ofone thing: 'its uninterrupted academic

calendar'.The 40-year old university sits comfortably on

top of the list of “The Statistics of Choice of Institutions”generated from the enrolment records of the UnifiedTertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) by theJointAdmissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

It has topped the list for two years running. In the2015/2016 UTME, which was fully computer-based,107,491 of the 1.4 million candidates that took theexamination chose UNILORIN as their most preferredinstitution to attend. For the 2014/2015 UTME, theuniversity had 105,000 seeking to be admitted into theuniversity. Second placed University of Benin for bothyears, recorded about 30,000 less candidates (71, 497this year, and 76,000 last year).

Records show that the university has steadilygrown. In 2011, it was the 8th most preferred university, which improved to fifth in 2012; and second in 2013.

However, while the university is increasinglypopular with new applicants, its authorities have nothesitated in wielding the big stick against deviant anderring students.

Strict adherence to rules and regulation is

required of students. And many who have fallen foul ofthe rules have been shown the way out.

The rules guiding student activities as containedin the students' handbook states that: “A student shall notengage in any form of activity, alone or with any otherperson or group, which interferes with, restricts, hindersor adversely affects the objectives of the university; notengage in any form of activity whether alone or with anyother person or group which interferes with, restricts, hinders or adversely affects the rights of any person dulyauthorized and lawfully present on university premisesto express any view of any subject peacefully or whichprevents any person duly authorized from entering, passing through, or leaving the university premises forsuch purposes and not engage in any form of activitywhich interferes with, restricts, hinders, disrupts, oradversely affects teaching, research, study of any kindetc.”

Others are: “Every student (male or female) mustdress decently, every student must avoid any dress thatmay expose sensitive and vital areas of the body; conducthimself/herself in such a way that his/her priority is tolive a wholesome life devoid of anti-social activitiesespecially cultism; not engage in any dishonest, false orother misleading representation or activity which affectsacademic assessments or examination and to obey allexamination regulations, among others.”

Sanctions for violation of these rules attract fines,r e s t i t u t i o n , r e p r i m a n d a n d w a r n i n g ,suspension/rustication and expulsion.

In April, 13 students faced the UNILORINStudents’Disciplinary Committee (SDC); seven of themwere found to have run afoul of the university rules andwere expelled. Two were rusticated for a semester eachwhile four were exonerated.

In the last four sessions, the university hasdisciplined no fewer than 50 students. In the last sessionalone, the university expelled 11 students and rusticated
