Applications: The possibilities in terms of applications is described by 8 basic samples. By using these samples, or combining them, all needs should be covered.

General comments: Ex-box:
Ex-barriers and other modules for installation in safe area may be installed in a Ex-box (part no.: 0618691-000). If one box is too small, more boxes may be used. Standard delivery includes 3 cable glands: 1 M16 for ex connection, one M20 for output to safe area, one M 12 for ground connector. Note that additional cable glands may be required, depending on the application. Refer to part numbers for box and cable glands at page 6. Note that Ex-box must be ordered separately. It is not included in the part numbers for the modules.
Uniflo 1200 option modules:
On the detailed drawings, Uniflo 1200 symbol indicates option boards for Uniflo 1200. Note the following, when used for hazardous area: - Analogue output card is available in two options: - passive output, for use in hazardous or safe area (part no. 0618630-000) - active or passive output, for use in safe area only (part no. 0618631-000)
Modems and 230 V AC power supply modules must be installed in safe area only.
Attention:
Always check that ex-limits for the option boards (refer to customer file, sections for the option modules) matches the limits for the barriers (this has been taken care of on the application samples).
Always follow local regulations for electrical installations, in particular for the hazardous area.

1. Modem, battery powered Uniflo 1200:

Details:
Communication card is installed in Uniflo 1200, and powered by battery. The battery lifetime will be reduced (approx. 50 %), because of the additional power consumption of the communication card.
Zener barrier, GSM modem and power supply for GSM modem is installed in a box, to be mounted in safe area.
Max. cable length from Uniflo 1200 to modem box is 100 m.
Attention: Be sure to follow regulations for ex-installations.

2. External power for Uniflo 1200:
Details:
This solution is used when Uniflo 1200 is mains supplied, e.g. if equipped with options requiring external power supply, such as HF board.
The zener barrier used is a unipolar positive type.
Note that Uniflo 1200 Ex power interface is isolated. Therefore equalizing safe ground for Uniflo 1200 is not required.

3. Connection to Medi Flomote:
Details:
This application is used when Uniflo 1200 must be connected to a Medi Flomote installed in safe area. The zener barrier used is a unipolar positive type.
Note that Uniflo 1200 serial port is isolated. Therefore equalizing safe ground for Uniflo 1200 is not required.

This application is used when Uniflo 1200 must be connected to an analogue input on equipment installed in safe area (e.g. a PC or a PLC). Isolating amplifier is used as safety barrier.
As isolation amplifier is used for safety barrier, no equalizing safe ground for Uniflo 1200 is required.

Details:
This application is used when Uniflo 1200 is installed in safe area, and 4-20mA transmitters in hazardous area must be connected to Uniflo (Using analogue input board). Zener barrier is used for safety barrier.
Note that Uniflo 1200 analogue input is not isolated. Therefore equalizing safe ground for Uniflo 1200 is required.

Applications for Ex-installations
General precautions
General: Installations in hazardous area must be carried out strictly in accordance to local regulations. People carrying out this kind of work must be trained in these regulations, and must follow closely the actual changes in regulations, standards etc. The following is only meant as a guideline, which is not necessarily up to date.
Standard Ex-installation:
A: Switchboard, main or auxiliary B: Measuring equipment (e.g. PLC or flow computer) C: Ex barrier (Zener barrier or. isolation amplifier) D: Process equipment (transmitters etc.) E: Process installation F: Netforsyningskabel, m. jord, el. jord via jordspyd G: Power supply cable, for measuring equipment H: Signal cable for process
Installations in hazardous area must be carried out , so local heating or sparks is prevented. This is obtained by limiting the power sent to the hazardous area. Normally, this is done by installing zener barriers, that when properly grounded, limits the current and the voltage, or by using isolated amplifiers, where the low power side connected to hazardous area, is isolated from the high power side at the safe area.

The limiting component (C) must be ATEX-approved. As mentioned, it may be a zener barrier, or an isolated amplifier. Zener barriers includes components, that will lead any voltage above the specified limitation voltage, to ground. If the voltage becomes above a certain value, a fuse will blow, and the connection to the safe area will be cut. For zener barriers, it is essential that ground at the hazardous area is the same as in the safe area, to ensure that voltage at the zener barrier at safe area, and the process in hazardous area, will stay within the specified limits. In general, all parts of the installation must refer to the same ground. The requirements for the ground connections are depending on weather the device in hazardous area is isolated by e.g. optocoupler or not. Isolation amplifiers never require this equalization ground, as the high voltage at safe area is isolated from the low power circuits at hazardous area, by the amplifier. When the safe ground is established, zener barriers are relatively easy and cheap to install. However, the safety ground may some times be difficult or impossible to establish.
