    About the digital security code

    This cordless telephone uses adig i t al secur i t y code t o

    prevent unauthorized accessto your base uni t . Thissecurity code prevents othercordless handsets from makingcal ls through your base uni t .A random security code wil l be

    Setting up the PhoneDo the following steps:

    I NSTRUCTI ONS. Here are some impor t ant gui del i nes you shoul d consider:

    The locat ion should be close to both a phone jack and a continuous power out letwhich is not switchable.

    Keep the base and handset away from sources of electrical noise such as motors,microwave ovens, and f luorescent l ight ing.

    Be sure there is suff icient space to raise the base antenna to a vert ical posit ion.

    The base can be placed on a desk, tabletop, or mounted on a standard wall plate.

    Avoid excessive moisture,

    extremely low temperatures,

    dust, mechanical vibration, or shock

    Avoid heat sources, such as

    radiators, air ducts, and sunlight

    Avoid television sets and

    other electronic

    equipment

    Avoid noise sources such as a window

    by a street with heavy traffic

    Avoid microwave ovens

    Avoid personal computers

    Avoid other cordless telephones

    B. Install the battery pack

    Charge the battery pack for at least 15-20 hours

    before plugging the telephone jack and start usingyour phone.

    1)Press in on the battery cover release and sl ide the coverdown unt i l i t comes of f .

    2)Connect the battery pack connector observing correct

    polar i ty (black and red wires) to the jack inside thebattery compartment.

    Do not exert any force on this connect ion. I t could causedamage to the battery or handset. Once you are certainthat you have made a good connect ion, then insert the

    battery pack into the bat tery compartment. Do not pinchthe wires.

    3)Securely close the battery compartment cover by sl iding i tup unt i l i t snaps i n t o p lace.

    4)Place the handset on the base.

    Use only the Unidenbatt ery (BT-905)supplied with your

    phone. Replacementbatteries are alsoavailable through theUniden PartsDepartment (see page8) .

    Recharge your phoneon a regular basis byreturning the handsetto the base after eachphone call.

    Batt ery use t ime ( per charge)

    Seven hours continuous use. Fourteen days when the handset is in the standby mode.

    Low battery alert

    When the battery pack is very low and needs to be charged,the phone is programmed to el iminate funct ions in order tosave power. I f the phone is not in use, Low Batteryappears on the LCD and none of the keys wil l operate.

    I f the phone is in use, Low Battery f lashes and thehandset beeps. Complete your conversation as quickly aspossible and return the handset to the base uni t for

    charging.

    Cleaning the battery charging contacts

    To maintain a good charge, it is important to cleanthe battery contacts on the handset and base unitwith a dry cloth or a pencil eraser about once a

    month. Do not use any liquids or solvents.

    The last number dialed in the redial memory and the

    numbers stored in the memory locations are retained forup to 30 minutes while you replace the battery pack.

    Place the power cord sothat it does not createa trip hazard or whereit could become chafedand create a fire or

    electrical hazard.

    C. Connect the base unit

    1)Connect the AC adapter to the DC IN 9Vjack

    and a standard 120V AC wall outlet.2)Set the base on a desk or tabletop, and place

    the handset on the base unit as shown. (Forwal l mount ing, see "Mount ing the Base Unit ona Wall" , on page 13.)

    3)Raise the antenna to a vert ical posi t ion.

    4)Make sure the status LED i l luminates. I f theLED does not i l luminate, check to see that theAC adapter is plugged in and the handsetmakes good contact with the base chargingcontacts.

    Use only the supplied AD-420 AC adapter.Do not use any other AC adapter.

    Connect the AC adapter to a continuouspower supply.

    Place the base unit close to the AC outlet sothat you can unplug the AC adapter easi ly.

    The handset can beplaced face up or

    face down in the basefor charging.

    After instal l ing the bat tery pack in the handset, charge your handset at least15-20 hours before plugging into the phone l ine . Once the handset battery

    pack is ful ly charged, connect the telephone l ine cord to the base andt elephone wal l out l et .

    Mounting the Base Unit on a Wall

    This phone can be mounted on any standard wall plate.

    1)Plug the the AC adapter to the DC IN 9Vjack.

    2)Wrap the AC adapter cord inside the molded wiringchannel as shown.

    3)Plug the AC adapter into a standard 120V AC wall out let.

    4) Plug t he te lephone l i ne cord in t o t he TEL LINEjack.Wrap the cord inside the molded wiring channel

    as shown.

    5) Plug t he te lephone l i ne cord in t o t he te lephone out le t .

    6)Raise the antenna to a vert ical posi t ion.

    TerminologyThroughout this manual, terms such as Standby and Talk Mode are used. Below isthe terminology explanat ion. Standby Mode - The handset is not in use, off the base, and talk/flash has not

    been pressed. A dial tone is not present.

    Talk Mode - The handset is off the base and talk/flash has been pressedenabl ing a dial tone.

    Direct wall mounting

    I f you don' t have a standard wal l p late, you can mount your phone direct ly to thewal l . Before doing this, consider the fol lowing:

    Avoid electr ical cables, pipes, or other i tems behind the mount ing locat ion thatcould cause a hazard when insert ing screws into the wall .

    Try to mount your phone within 5 feet of a working phone jack to avoidexcessive cord lengths.

    Make sure the wall material is capable of support ing the weight of the base

    and handset. Use #10 screws ( mini mum lengt h of 1-3/ 8 i nches) wi t h anchoring devices

    sui table for the wal l mater ial where the base uni t wi l l be placed.

    1) Inser t two mount ing screws in to the wal l , (wi th thei rappropriate anchoring device) , 3- 15/ 16 i nches apart . Al low

    about 1 / 8 of an i nch bet ween t he wal l and screw heads formount ing the phone.

    2)Refer to steps 1 through 7 on page 13 to mount the telephone.

    Setting Menu OptionsThere are f ive setup options available. They are Caller ID options [AutoTalk,

    CI DCW ( Call er I D on Cal l Wai t i ng) , and Area Code] , Di al Mode and Language.

    AutoTalk al lows you to answer the phone without pressing the talk/flash bu t ton .I f the phone rings when AutoTalk is on, simply remove the handset from the baseand the phone automatical ly answers the cal l . I f the phone rings when AutoTalkis off , you must press talk/flash to answer the cal l .

    Caller ID options

    To ch ange your Aut oTal k and CI DCW:

    1)Press and hold cid/menu. The following screen appears.

    2) Use or , or a number key ( 1 and 2) t o move t h e

    point er t o t he select ion t hat you would l i ke t o change.Press select to toggle between On and Off.

    3)Press end and return the handset to the base uni t to complete the set t ing. Thehandset returns to the standby mode.

    To enter your Area Code

    If you enter a 3-digi t area code number in the Area Code opt ion, your localarea code does not appear in Caller ID messages. Do not program this option, if

    your cal l ing area requires 10-digi t d ial ing.When reviewing Caller ID messages, you wil l see only the local seven digitnumber. For cal ls received from outside your local area code, you wil l see a ful l10-digi t number.

    1)When the phone is in the standby mode, press and holdcid/menu. The following screen appears.

    2)Press 3 or press t wi ce t o select Area Code.

    3)Press select.

    4)Use the number keys ( 0 t o 9) , #/ , */tone/ , ordelete/ch to enter the 3-digi t area code.

    5)Pressselect. A confirmation tone sounds and the displayed area code is entered.

    6)Press end or return the handset to the base uni t to complete the set t ing. The

    handset returns to the standby mode.

    When the area code has already been stored in memory, thestored area code wil l be displayed. To change it, use thedelete/ch and number keys to enter the new area code.Then press select. A confi rmation tone sounds.

    To complete the setting, press end or return the handsetto the base un i t .

    If your calling arearequires 10-digitdialing, do not programthis option.

    Choosing the dial mode

    Most phone systems use tone dialing which sends DTMF tones through the phonelines. However, some phone systems sti l l use pulse dialing such as in rural areas.

    The defaul t set t ing is tone dial ing. Depending on your dial ing system, set themode as follows:

    1)When the phone is in the standby mode, press and holdcid/menu. The following screen appears.

    2) Press 4 or press t hree t i mes t o select Dial.

    3)Press select to toggle between Tone and Pulse.

    4)Press end or return the handset to the base uni t to complete the set t ing. The

    handset returns to the standby mode.

    Setting the language

    1)When the phone is in the standby mode, Press and holdcid/menu. The following screen appears.

    2) Press 5 or press four t i mes t o select Language .

    3)Press select to toggle between Eng and Fr..

    4)Press end or return the handset to the base uni t to complete the set t ing. The

    handset returns to the standby mode.

    If you are not sureof your dialingsystem, make a trialcall. If the callconnects, leave thesetting as is,otherwise set forpulse dialing.

    If your phone systemrequires pulse

    dialing and you needto send the DTMFtones for certainsituations during acall, you mayswitch-over t otone dialing (refer to

    Tone DialingSwitch-over onpage 20).

    Adjusting the Handset Ringer and Earpiece VolumeHandset ringer tone and volume

    You must subscribe through your local telephone company toreceive Call Waiting Service.

    Flash and Call Waiting

    I f you have "Cal l Wait ing" service and a cal l wai t ing tonesounds while you are on a call, press talk/flash to acceptthe wait ing cal l . There is a short pause, then you wil l hearthe new cal ler. To return to the original cal ler, presstalk/flash again.

    Selecting a Different ChannelIf you encounter interference while using your phone, you can manually change the

    phones channel for clear operation. This function works only when the phone isin use.Press delete/ch. Scanning appears on the display, indicating the phone ischanging to another channel. For more information on interference, refer to"Precautions" on page 59.

    PageTo locate the handset (while it 's off the base), pressfind hs on the base. The handset beeps for 60 seconds.

    Paging is canceled when pressing any handset key, find hson the base or the handset is returned to the base. Paging is also canceledwhen the phone receive

    a incoming call.

    In memory dialingoperation, you mustpress a key within 30seconds. Otherwise, anerror tone will soundand the phone willreturn to standby.If you return thehandset to the base,the phone will returnto standby also.

    Storing Phone Numbers and NamesMemory Dialing allows you to dial a number using just a few key presses. Your

    EXAI 378 seri es st ores up t o 10 names/ numbers i n t he handset .

    1)Press and hold mem un t i l Memory Store is displayed.

    2)Press or , or ent er a number (0 - 9) t o select t hememory locat ion where you would l ike to store the number.

    3)Pressselect. The following screen appears and a cursorf lashes indicat ing that the display is ready for the nameto be entered.

    I f this screen appears, the selected memory locat ion is

    already stored. Then you must ei ther edi t the entry inth is locat ion, delete the ent ry in th is locat ion, or se lectGo Back to choose another locat ion.

    4)To enter a name (up to 14 characters), use number keys.

    See the Steps for Entering Names and Special Characters.(See pages 24-25)

    Use #/ and */tone/ to move the cursor to the desired locat ion. Use delete/ch to delete characters as needed. Press and hold delete/ch to delete al l the characters. I f a name is not required, go to step 5.

    To scroll between the prerecorded message or your own personal greeting, pressgreetingwhen the outgoing message is played. If you want to use your owngreeting, you may want to change your greeting to omit the prompt to leave amessage. Refer to "Recording a personal outgoing message" (Greeting) on page 45.

    You have three record t ime options. The options " 1 minute" or " 4 minutes" setthe durat ion for recording the incoming messages. " Announce only" answers the

After you play al l your newmessages, you can then play your old messages.

    The digi tal securi ty code is an ident i f icat ion code used to connect the handsetand the base unit . Normally, sett ing the code is not necessary.The first t ime you charge your handset, the security code is automatically set.(See "About the digital securi ty code", page 7.) In the rare situat ion that yoususpect another cordless telephone is using the same security code, you can changethe code.

    1)Remove the handset from the base unit . Press and hold find hs on the base.

    2)Whi le the handset is emit t ing the paging sound, place the handset on the baseun i t hold ing find hs. The paging sound stops. Leave the handset on the basefor more than 3 seconds. A new random security code is set.

    Installing the BeltclipTo attach the beltclip

    Make sure the AC adapter is plugged into the base and wall outlet.
