¿Quiénes son?
Remember that in Spanish there is NOT an apostrophe s ( ___’s) to show ownership/belonging -- or to
indicate how someone is related to someone else. Instead, one must use the preposition de.
When using de to show family relationship:
The de is placed _______________ the family relationship term and the person’s name (or subject pronoun).
Ejemplo: Sam’s mother ➔ La madre de Sam (the mother of Sam)
A. ¡Te toca! Translate these relationships into Spanish.
1. Rita’s aunt ____________________________________________________________
2. Mario’s cousin ____________________________________________________________
3. Paula’s grandma ____________________________________________________________
4. Pilar’s niece ____________________________________________________________
5. Felipe’s sister ____________________________________________________________
Sometimes we use TWO family terms to indicate how people are related. In these cases the preposition de is placed _____________________ the 2 family terms.
Ejemplo: my mother’s mother-in-law ➔ la suegra de mi madre (the mother-in-law of my mother)
B. ¡Te toca otra vez! Translate these relationships into Spanish using only family titles.
1. my father’s mother ____________________________________________________________
2. my grandpa’s cousin ___________________________________________________________
3. my sister’s son ____________________________________________________________
4. my cousin’s wife ____________________________________________________________
5. my nephew’s brother ____________________________________________________________
C. Now, complete each sentence by telling which family member is being described.
Ejemplo: el hermano de mi padre es ___mi tío_______________
1. El padre de mi padre es _____________________________________.
2. La hermana de mi madre es __________________________________.
3. El esposo de mi abuela es ___________________________________.

Adjective Agreement
In the ROPA unit we learned…..
• Adjectives used to describe or modify nouns, and since nouns in Spanish have number
and gender (FOL #1), the adjectives that describe the nouns must “agree” or match.
There are several types of adjectives in Spanish. We already know 3 adjective agreement patterns.
O masculino femenino
singular feo fea
plural feos feas

I can modify adjectives to agree with a noun.

La familia: Presentación
Presentación ORAL Presentación ESCRITA
Imagine that you are the circled person in one of the families shown. Prepare a presentation
with information about yourself and the highlighted family members. (in rectangles)
Note that there is one family member of the opposite gender, and two or more family members
grouped together (grandparents, cousins, etc.). The group should be discussed as a group and not
separately as individuals. (My parents are tall, They are nice, etc.)
As you describe your family, include:
- the name of the person(s) being described
- how the person(s) is(are) related to you (Skip this on the entry about yourself.)
- adjectives to describe the person’s/group’s physical appearance
- adjectives to describe the person’s/group’s personality
The highlighted people and the list above outline required content. If you would like to expand
beyond minimum requirements, you could discuss other family members and/or include
additional related information from earlier units of study.
Transitions: Include these words to help your presentation flow smoothly.
y=and o=or pero=but
cuando=when también=also
Presentations should include complete, accurately structured sentences in Spanish.
Tips for success on Presentational Assessments:
1. Demonstrate/show off what you’ve learned. Your grade is based on what you show you know. (Your work should include a wide variety of new and challenging information from the current unit, otherwise the teacher assumes you did not learn it.)
2. These assessments are open note! Use your workbook to incorporate vocabulary and grammar structures from the unit and to check accuracy.
3. Be sure to include all required components! 4. Use work time wisely. You don’t want to rush through a presentational assessment – you need to plan out your
content and pay attention to accuracy so that it is in best effort form --practiced/polished --when you submit it. 5. Brainstorm ideas and write your draft in Spanish, not English. 6. DO NOT USE A TRANSLATOR or get help from native speakers / advanced students. If a teacher suspects
improper help you will receive a zero. You cannot earn credit for others’ work.
124
Interpersonal: ¡Adivina quién!
During this interpersonal assessment, you will take on the role of one of the members of una familia
latinoamericana, using a family tree provided in class. You must ask and answer a variety of
questions (in complete sentences, and all in Spanish) to determine your partner’s identity.
At least three questions are required, but it may be necessary to ask more. A portion of the
assessment grade will be based on whether or not you are able to correctly guess who your partner
is.
Preguntas necesarias:
Do you have (children)? (a husband, siblings, etc.)
What are you like? Is your name ________?
Preguntas posibles:
Are you old/young, nice/mean, etc.? (adjectives to describe physical appearance or personality)
Tips for success on Interpersonal Assessments: 1. As with a presentational assessment, this is an opportunity for you to demonstrate what you’ve learned in the
unit being assessed. Your grade is based on what you show you know. 2. Practice ahead of time! While these are “spontaneous” conversations, you will know the context of the
assessment in advance. Being prepared will make you far more comfortable. 3. The focus of this type of assessment is on communication in Spanish. Worry less about being “perfect” than
about including the important components of the assessment. 4. Try to make your assessment as much like a real conversation as possible. Greet your partner, ask
conversational questions. Listen to what your partner is saying and react accordingly.
Respuestas completas:
Some of the questions your partner will ask may require
only yes/no answers. However, you should extend your
answers to provide additional information. This will allow
you to demonstrate mastery of a wider variety of unit
content and will help your partner determine your identity.
Ejemplo: If your partner asks if you have siblings, you might answer:
“Yes, I have siblings. My sister’s name is ___.” - OR -
“No I don’t have siblings, but I have two children.”
