Here is a group of girls going to school. In Yemen, this quite unusual. Girls in particular don’t go to school. The situation is especially serious in the countryside. Parents keep their daughters at home because boys and girls are not allowed to sit in the same classroom. There is also a shortage of female teachers. More than seventy-five percent of the women in the countryside are illiterate. In five rural provinces, UNICEF has set up a program to stimulate education for girls. UNICEF is also working to train female teachers and drawing more attention in the media and politics for girls’ education and for the rights of girls and women. The result? In the five districts with child-friendly schools, more children — especially girls — are going to school. All in all, about twenty thousand children are benefiting from UNICEF’s educational program. Three-hundred thirty-seven women have been trained as teachers. Every child has a right to primary education, no matter where they live. This principle is laid down in the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Education is an indispensable precondition for a safe future. Even so, a fifty-seven million children of primary school age around the world do not attend school. Girls in particular miss the chance to be educated. Why? Tuition fees are often an obstacle. UNICEF has made an appeal to do away with tuition fees and uniforms. And many countries are taking the idea on board. Sometimes children have to work. Sometimes the distance to school is too great, or there are no books, or there is war, and children can’t go to school. Here, too, UNICEF goes in search of suitable solutions, for instance, with the School-in-a-Box. In emergency situations, at disaster areas or refugee camps, we distribute School-in-a-Box kits. This is a box filled with school materials with which a teacher can start a school to teach as many as forty pupils. Especially in emergency situations, it’s so important to get children back into their daily routine. The lessons also make ample time for trauma counseling. �Girls account for more than half of the children who do not attend school. Many parents give their sons priority treatment. In 1960 just forty-eight percent of all children went to school. By 2009 the number had risen to eighty percent. Since 1990, fifty million more children are going to school.

The No Lost Generation initiative was launched in October 2013 backed by numerous partners from UN and international agencies, donors, governments and NGOs. It underlines that strategic investments in the education of children affected by the crisis in Syria can provide children with the skills and sense of civic responsibility to help rebuild their society. And helping that generation to overcome the psychological distress and trauma caused by the conflict, and reducing the potential for replicating the hatred and violence they had experienced, requires an equal investment in repairing the less visible damage to children’s minds. There is a compelling and immediate need to increase strategic investments in education and protection for children living through this emergency.
