For the last fifty years Cuba hasbeen so close but so distant!Many changes are underway,and we’ll witness them first-handon this week-long journey. Joinme in April to discover this

island nation past and present. Spend severaldays in vibrant Havana; then set out to visit threediverse smaller cities and some extraordinarynatural sites. Board your flight to Havana’s José Martí InternationalAirport, where you will be met and accompanied tothe city center. A panoramic tour will introduce youto landmarks including the Plaza de la Revoluciónand the Malencon, the esplanade along the sea wall.Havana is arguably the best-preserved Spanishcolonial city in the Americas, with many of its statelypalaces now housing museums. Since Old Havana(Habana Vieja) was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, many buildings have beenrestored and others are in progress.

We’ll drive to the small town of San Francisco dePaula, about ten miles from Havana, to see FincaVigia, Ernest Hemingway’s beloved home from 1939to 1960. Lunch will be at a paladar, one of the privately-owned restaurants now permitted in Cuba.Then visit a garage devoted to maintaining theU.S.-made cars of the 1950s that have served Cubansever since. They are emblems of style and of ingenuity,having been preserved and adapted over a half-centuryeven though U.S. car parts were unavailable. We’llalso enjoy a performance by dancers and musiciansfrom Habana Compás Dance, whose choreographycombines contemporary styles with Latin Americanfolk dance, flamenco gestures and all the rhythmsources at hand.

After breakfast, take a walking tour of Old Havanato see the beautiful baroque and neo-classicalmonuments, arcades and balconies around the mainsquares. The buildings that line the Plaza Viejaspan four centuries. Among the highlights are theCatedral de San Cristóbal, the Governors’ Palacethat is now the City Museum, the St. Francis Basilicaand the National Theater. Nearby is the fortressbuilt by Spain in 1558 to repel pirate attacks.

Visit the seaside barrio of Jaimanitas to see thework of artist José Rodriguez Fuster. His ceramictile roofs, walls, doorways and benches so define

the neighborhood that it’s called “Fusterlandia.”The exuberant style of his ceramic and other workis inspired by Gaudí and Brancusi, with the powerfulstamp of Picasso hovering in the background.

Lunch today will be at a different paladar. We'llvisit The-Merger Art Studio, where the focus is on steel-and-plexiglass sculptures that draw onpopular culture. The three artists who formed

The-Merger in 2009 now work “across the divide,” twoin Havana and one in Miami. Later we’ll have sometime to wander the San José Arts and Crafts Market,Havana’s major market for art and decorative objects,which occupies an 1885 warehouse near the pier.

VIÑALES VALLEY • VISITS TO TOBACCO FARMAND ORGANIC FARM • LUNCH AT ORGANICRESTAURANT • ARRIVE AT MARIA LA GORDA

Note: Before disembarking you will need to pack anovernight bag or backpack with whatever you need throughtomorrow afternoon. While the ship follows the coast

around the west end of Cuba to Maria la Gorda, we willdrive through the beautiful Viñales Valley with time for activities as described below, and will spend the night at theHotel Maria la Gorda. The hotel, used primarily by divers,does not offer luxury but does provide a clean room and essential services. We think you will prefer this itinerary to spending almost 24 hours on board.

Drive southwest through the Viñales Valley, whereundulating karst landscapes are dotted with rockyoutcroppings, small towns and villages, interspersedwith farmland. The vernacular architecture, traditionalagriculture and striking terrain have earned the areaUNESCO World Heritage status. Visit a tobacco farmand talk with farmers about the production of Cuba’sfamed cigars. We will have lunch at an organicrestaurant before visiting one of Cuba’s many organic farms.

The organic farming program began in Cuba in the1990s, after the dissolution of the Soviet Union,when the island had to feed its population andmaintain its farmland. Farm staff will elaborate on this initiative during your visit.

From the Viñales Valley we’ll drive to Maria la Gorda,a settlement at the southwest corner of the islandbest known as a diving center. We will check in atthe Hotel Maria la Gorda for the night and meetPanorama here tomorrow. B/L/D

Tuesday, April 11

VISIT RURAL SCHOOL • GUANAHACABIBESNATIONAL PARK • BEACH BARBECUE • SAILFOR ISLA DE LA JUVENTUD

Drive to the village of San Juan del Valle, where wewill visit the local school and meet children and theirteachers. Take part in a people-to-people exchangeon differences between the educational systems ofCuba and the U.S., especially in rural schools.

We’ll visit Guanahacabibes National Park, part ofthe Biosphere Reserve established in 1987 on theremote Guanahacabibes Peninsula. It is a complexlandscape of mangroves, woodlands, reefs, beaches,scrubland and evergreen forests, home to manywildlife species including iguanas and alligators, andon the migration route of over 170 bird species.This peninsula is also of interest as one of the lastrefuges of the aboriginal Guanahatabeyes, who fledhere from the Spanish conquistadors. Some 140archaeological sites in the area document theirpresence and their culture. Learn more about thisenvironment and its history in conversation withlocal people and naturalists.

Wednesday, April 12

ISLA DE LA JUVENTUD: VISIT UNIVERSITY INNUEVA GERONA • SEE PRESIDIO MODELO &MEET ISLANDERS • RETURN TO SHIP & SAILTOWARD CIENFUEGOS

Enter the Bay of Singuanea on the west side of thissmall island and moor in front of the Colony Hotel,where Christopher Columbus is thought to havedropped anchor in 1494. After breakfast, disembarkon the beach and drive to Nueva Gerona, the island’scapital city. Visit the University of the Isla de la Juventud, founded in 1973 and named in honor of Jesús Montané Oropesa, a leader in the CubanRevolution. Engage in a People-to-People conversationabout the centrality of education to this island.

Then take a panoramic sightseeing tour of the islandand see the Presidio Modelo, where Fidel and RaúlCastro were held from 1953 to 1955 along with manyother opponents of the government. Castro closedthe prison in 1967, declared it a national monument,and “repurposed” the island, the southern portionas a national park and the rest an area to be newlypopulated by young Cubans. We will meet some ofthe islanders before returning to Panorama for alate lunch.

Enjoy breakfast onboard in beautiful CienfuegosBay before disembarking in the city fondly knownas “The Pearl of the South.” The limestone fortressat the entrance to the bay, the Castillo de Jagua,was built by Philip V of Spain to protect the areafrom pirates. However, it was a group of French

settlers from Bordeaux who founded the city andcreated its distinctive layout. Cienfuegos became asignificant port for trade in sugar, tobacco, coffee,mangoes and other products of the fertile regionthat surrounds it. The city received UNESCOWorld Heritage status in 2005 for the treasuredneo-classical, art nouveau and art deco buildingsthat line its squares and boulevards.

Among the distinctive buildings are the domedGovernment Palace (City Hall), the cathedral with itsasymmetric red bell towers and stained glass

work, the Colegio San Lorenzo and Teatro ThomasTerry, the Spanish-Moorish Palacio del Valle and thePalacio Ferrer, along with many charming housesand shops. Our walking tour will take in some ofthe highlights of the city’s architectural heritage.

In addition to the architecture, the seacoast, the beautiful José Martí Park and an outstandingbotanical garden, Cienfuegos also offers abundantarts activity. We will visit the Graphic Arts workshopfor discussions with local artists about their workand lives, and stop at the Benny Moré School ofArt, where students prepare for careers in music,dance and the visual arts. Lunch in one of the localrestaurants will feature typical Cuban dishes andlilting music. In the afternoon we’ll attend a concertby the Chorus of Cienfuegos or a string quartet, andhave a chance to speak with the performers.

Return to the ship, gather for one more lively discussion with Diane Rehm, and join the Captainfor a special Farewell Dinner this evening. LaterPanorama cruises east to Casilda, the port ofTrinidad. B/L/D

TRINIDAD: WALKING TOUR WITH CITY HISTORIAN’S OFFICE REPRESENTATIVE •VISIT ROMANTIC MUSEUM • LÁZARO WOODCARVING STUDIO • DINNER &OVERNIGHT ON BOARD

After a relaxed breakfast onboard, disembark to visit Trinidad, which lies between the sea andthe Escambray Mountains. This meticulously well-preserved Spanish colonial city, founded in 1514, is aplace of cobblestone streets and plazas, neoclassicalpalaces and beautiful wrought-iron balconies. Theprincipal church, Santísima Trinidad, is the oldestchurch in Cuba. The city and the Valle de los Ingenios(Valley of Sugar Mills) around it are designated aUNESCO World Heritage Site. We’ll take a guidedwalk through the town and meet some residentsalong the way. We’ll also visit the Museo Romántico,a collection of 19th-century paintings and decorativeobjects housed in the palacio of the sugar baronNicolás, Count of Brunet.

After stopping for lunch, visit the studio and galleryof Lázaro Niebla Castro, known in Cuba simply asLázaro, who creates bas-relief portraits in wood.

His work was recently shown at a Minneapolisgallery under the auspices of the US Cuba ArtistExchange. We will return to Casilda to boardPanorama, celebrating all we have experienced anddiscovered. The ship will remain in the harborovernight. B/L/D

Saturday, April 15

DISEMBARK PANORAMA • TRANSFER TOCIENFUEGOS AIRPORT • FLY TO U.S. GATEWAYAND CONTINUE HOMEWARD

Disembark Panorama after breakfast and drive toJaime González Airport in Cienfuegos, about 1 1/2hours away. Part of the route runs between a naturereserve in the Sierra del Escambray and the azureCaribbean. Board the flight to your U.S. gatewayand continue to your home airport. B

Note: Cuba is still developing its facilities for visitors. Thestandard for accommodations, meals and road conditions isnot yet what U.S. travelers are accustomed to. The sailing yacht Panorama is a modern three-masted sailingship that fosters a congenial and unhurried cruise experience.Launched in 1993, it has been renovated several times,most recently in 2014.

The ship provides aspects of the traditional sailing experience, enhancedby teak decks and gleaming nautical trim, though it carries motors so isnot subject to the vagaries of wind and sea. The interior of the ship is fullyair-conditioned and features a lounge on the Main Deck with a small libraryand full-length windows, and a spacious indoor and outdoor bar-loungearea on the Upper Deck with large windows that provide ever-changing views.

All cabins are outside, Category A cabins on the Upper Deck with windows,Category B cabins on the Main Deck with windows, and Categories C andD cabins on the Lower Deck with portholes. The cabins are decorated inwarm, light colors with nautical dark wood trim and are furnished withdouble beds or twins (See Deck Plan and cabin descriptions). All cabins areequipped with individual climate control and have TV, a mini-refrigerator,direct-dial internal-use telephones, safe boxes, hair dryers, and bathroomswith showers.

During the day life on board centers on the outdoor areas, the Sun Deckand the shaded exterior deck on the aft of Panorama. The swimming platformat the stern enables guests to swim when weather and anchorage conditionspermit. Snorkeling equipment and inflatable kayaks are available.

The light-filled dining room within the ship accommodates all guests inone dinner seating, with cuisine reflecting local and international influences.Meals may also be served outdoors. Generous breakfast and lunch buffetsare provided, and most special dietary requirements or preferences areavailable if arranged in advance.

ParticipationGroup IST has been issued a license (#CT-2014-309395-1) by the Departmentof the Treasury, Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) authorizing themto organize and operate People to People exchange program, one of twelvecategories of travel U.S. citizens are permitted to undertake to Cuba. Tocomply with the terms of authorization, participants are expected to attendthe exchange events (barring illness or physical limitations).

Passport and visaYou will receive instructions on obtaining your visa. At Cuban Immigration& Customs, you will present your passport and your visa. If you hold a U.S.passport, the officer will stamp both portions of the visa and return oneto you, which you must submit when leaving Cuba.

ItineraryThe itinerary is at the discretion of the captain, who may make changes inconsideration of sea and weather conditions or other factors. Since spaceat the dock in Havana is severely limited, this itinerary may involve havingto transfer to/from shore by tender instead of docking at one of the twopiers. Onshore programs may be changed because of factors beyond ourcontrol. Your days will be filled with enlightening experiences, thoughsome may differ from those described here.

Dietary needsSome dietary restrictions can be accommodated on board, though somefoods are not available or plentiful. Paladores are small, family-ownedrestaurants that may not have a wide selection of dishes available. RESERVATION, DEPOSIT REQUIREMENT & FINAL PAYMENT SCHEDULE The quickest and best way to make a reservation is to call us at 1-800-491-1148 between 9:00 a.m.and 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday. You may also request a reservation online atwww.ccjourneys.com or www.smallshiptravel.com.Early registration is strongly recommended for thefollowing reasons: Group size is limited (24 on Culturaland Family Journeys; 20 on President’s programs);we use small-ship cruise lines with a small numberof cabins—choice cabins ALWAYS sell out quickly;single accommodations are subject to availability;some trips require additional preparation time andairlines restrict seat inventory.

PRIVATE CHARTER PAYMENT SCHEDULE:

Initial deposit: $1,000

Second payment: 50% of the cruise price at 225days prior to departure

Final payment: 180 days

Your deposit can be charged to a MasterCard or Visacredit card or paid by check. If you make your reser-vation after the final payment date, payment in fullwill be required at the time of the booking. Finalpayment for land tours is due at least 95 days prior todeparture. Make your check payable to “Cross-CultureJourneys” and send it to: 12 White Pine Road, Amherst,MA 01002. The final payment for small-ship cruisesis due at least 120 days prior to departure. If finalpayment is not paid when due, Cross-Culture reservesthe right to regard the reservation as cancelled. If thetrip is fully booked when we receive your deposit, wewill return your payment, or with your authorization,we will retain your deposit and place your name on apriority waiting list in case other participants cancel.

CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDSIf it becomes necessary for you to cancel your trip (orany portion thereof), you must notify Cross-Culture inwriting, by e-mail, or by fax immediately. The effectivedate of your cancellation will be the date that we receive your notification. Cross-Culture will assess acancellation charge to cover loss of nonrefundableadvance payments we may have made on your behalfto including, but not limited to: ground operators;cruise lines; airlines; government agencies; communi-cation expenses; and the loss of time. The cancellationcharge applies regardless of the reason for cancellation,such as State Department travel warnings. Cancellationcharges per person are as follows:

Name changes are considered a cancellation, and theabove-listed charges apply. If you are a no-show, ifyou cancel your trip after the departure date, or if youleave a trip already in progress, you will not receiveany refund for any unused portion of your trip. Note: Air refunds, if any, are determined by the individualairlines. Cross-Culture, may, in order to take advantage ofschedules and competitive pricing, purchase airlines ticketsin advance. These tickets are non-refundable within 95 days of departure.

Cross-Culture does not accept any responsibilityin your failure to secure the necessary documentationfor your trip.

HEALTH & WALKINGParticipants in all Cross-Culture programs shouldbe in good physical condition and prepared to enjoywalking, often over uneven cobblestones. We ask youto appraise your own capabilities honestly. And, weask that you be considerate of the other group membersand do not delay the scheduled group activities. Wedo not provide assistance if you require the use of awheelchair or have other personal needs; in such casesa companion who will assist you must accompany you.Cross-Culture reserves the right to decline to acceptor retain any participant should such person’s healthor deportment impede the operation of the trip orenjoyment of any other participant. If Cross-Culturedecides not to retain a participant during the trip,Cross-Culture assumes no financial responsibility forany unused portion of the tour or for any incidentalcharges therein.
