About UNE Libraries
Ketchum Library
Biddeford
Abplanalp Library
Portland
Biddeford: residential, undergraduate
Students
Portland: commuter, graduate
Pre-24/5
Libraries open an average of 93 hours/week.
Students working without full-time staff evenings/weekends.
No food or drink
allowed.
Limited 24-hour space elsewhere on campus.
Student requests for longer library hours.
Students want to study in the library!
Rationalization for not going 24-hours: two libraries to staff, some campus space already
24-hours, many library resources available electronically.
“The Best Thing a Library Can Be Is Open.”
Decided to stop saying “No”
Best Practices Suggested:
Building Security
& Safety.
Available food and drinks.
Use staff members, not students.
Best Practices Suggested (cont.):
Moving forward required: Funding Presidential buy-in
University of New England President Danielle Ripich
We got both.
But … with student staffing.
Money to students for
library jobs is good for
admissions & retention.
24/5 in full swing by October, 2010, and continuing to work beautifully.
Circulation Coordinators are the keys to this success.
