Twig provides a complete range of ecological landscaping services, working with ecologists
and directly with clients. We principally undertake the physical aspects of ecological
mitigation plans for development and associated habitat creation or enhancement.
We get involved in all stages of a project, from consultation to the initial site clearance
through to final landscaping, building relationships with ground workers and other
contractors to ensure the maximum effectiveness of the measures we help to implement.
Our staff are all ecologically trained with specialisms across the full range of European
Protected Species.
As an abiding principle, Twig strives to minimise the environmental impact of works we
undertake. One of our advantages is our adaptability to tailor our methods to the specific
requirements of the site. For example, we will forego the use of large machinery, if not
appropriate, and rely on muscle power to get a job done where this reduces potential
damage to resident species. In all cases the solutions we deliver are commercially viable.

SWINLEY FOREST
Twig were tasked with the vegetation clearance and ecological works for the 5km multi-
million pipeline for South East Water though Swinley Forest in October 2014. Timelines were
exceptionally tight and required detailed planning with the clients, landowners and ecologists.
Failing to meet the seasonal hibernation time restraints would cause significant timing and
cost issues to our client. In just three weeks, Twig cleared four large Newt fenced areas and
over 4km soft vegetation, fallen timber, all by hand and under the supervision of licensed
Ecologists. In total approximately 1000m3 of material was cut and raked by hand.

In the highest risk areas our work included hand and mechanical examination of forest floor,
exposing areas that reptiles may be seeking refuge. Twig worked under extreme pressure
focusing on the common objective with its clients and ecologists, coordinating its own
teams, sub-contractors and an array of stakeholders from Crown Estates to the MoD.
All pre-construction ecological trapping and mitigation work was successfully undertaken
and completed and as summed up by South East Water; “a fantastic achievement, and only
possible due to the hard work and cooperation between all of the teams involved, well
done to all.”

CLANCY DOCWRA • DORMOUSE BRIDGES • FRISTON
As part of a new 6.4km water main at Friston the route passed through Friston forest,
an area known to support dormice. With construction traffic excavating trenches and using
the woodland rides, dormice would be stopped from freely moving through the woodland.
A series of dormice bridges were constructed to create connectivity within the wood by
crossing the woodland rides. These bridges were constructed to be high enough for excavators
to pass underneath and provide protection from predators when dormice cross within them.
These will be left in place whilst vegetation regrows and the woodland canopy
connectivity re-establishes itself.

THANET EARTH
Twig Group successfully secured the landscaping contract for the 230 acre site at Thanet
Earth. The contract involved the establishment of 15,000 trees and shrubs and 75 hectares
of grass, providing habitat for many indigenous species in decline and contributing to the
biodiversity action plan for chalk grass land.
We maintained the site and worked with butterfly specialists and Thanet Earth to improve
the diversity of grass and flower species.

supported in order to manage many
of the coppice woodlands for future

Keeping solar panels clean will significantly improve their longer term performance.
Dirty solar panels can cause a production loss of 30% or more and therefore damages
returns on investment. Solar panels are affected by both rural and urban pollutants which
stick to the panels.
Twig offers both a mechanical and hand cleaning service to cover the different layouts
installers and planners prefer. Prices and methods reflect the positioning, layout and scale
of the solar farm and is determined following a thorough and complementary site survey.
With a competitive pricing structure and the ability to clean manually and mechanically
a regular programme of solar panel cleaning can produce outstanding improvements
to investment returns.
OLD RIDES SHEPPEY
This 50 Acre 6 megawatt solar farm site on the Isle Sheppey saw Twig plant 2000 meters
of mixed native hedgerow around the site together with the planting of a 2 acre coppice
consisting of Crataegus monogyna, Acer campestre, Corylus avellana, Quercus robur and
Salix caprea.
These tasks were completed within a very tight planting window with very low failures
experienced and our client commenting that they had never seen a hedge grow so well.
In addition to the landscape features above and to comply with planning conditions log
piles, bird boxes and bat boxes were installed within the solar park and on the adjoining
farm building.

WIX LODGE
Twig undertook a program of weed spraying at this solar farm site that included the use of
specialist equipment. This ensured that the risk of damage to the solar panels was minimised
whilst significantly increasing efficiencies to the otherwise labour intensive spraying activity.
Wicks lodge is 64 acre site producing 15 megawatts of power.
Twig have bespoke compact equipment that enables spraying weeds, cultivation of the
seedbed and seeding in between the PV rows. Twig manage the conservation measures
to enhance environmental diversification.
Twig also have the specialist to equipment to mow in between the rows to keep the
areas tidy and within expectation of the sites investors.

RIVERS OFFICE PARK DESIGN
Twig liaised with Aros Architects, Berwick Hill Properties and Madlins LLP to produce
a landscape concept for Rivers Office Park for inclusion in the initial presentation to
stakeholders. The site covers 5 acres and the three buildings provide a net area of
98,910 sq ft.
After receiving positive feedback, the concept has been developed to ensure the café
and landscape design work together as a cohesive whole with the plans being submitted
for planning consent to create a ’cafe hub’. An improved landscaped environment as
a café facility was defined as key, in order to ensure the facility provides a much needed
tenant amenity.
The scheme is currently out to tender and Twig are bidding to carry out the build element
that includes the installation of semi mature trees, planting of raised bespoke bowls,
courtyard planting, hedge screening and more formal planting to the front of the site.

STANMORE COUNTRY PARK
Twig has landscaped the 70-acre extension to Stanmore Country Park, North West London.
Wood Farm was a challenging but unique site, surrounded by woodland, with spectacular
views of the capital. Twig was awarded the contract to transform this inaccessible area of
former inert land fill site, farmland, and scrub into a haven for the public and wildlife alike.

STANMORE COUNTRY PARK
The transformation included clearing of vegetation, tree work, fencing, gate installation,
seeding of grass and wildflowers. Twig installed all weather paths to enable pedestrian and
wheelchair access into the country park, along with a cattle grid and car park formation.
Ahead of the tree and shrub planting Twig installed a Ha Ha wall and supplied and spread
3000t of topsoil prior to seeding.
Throughout the park there are access points that required kissing and pedestrian gates
and multiple benches and cycle racks installed.

The skill sets used to deliver show gardens to award winning Royal Horticultural Society
(RHS) standards are the same as those that Twig use when building our clients gardens.
When building a show garden the designs have been scrutinised by the RHS, those who
write the rule book, with only the best designs approved to build a garden at the UK’s most
prestigious garden shows. The exacting standards demanded within the show garden world
require exceptional planning and attention to detail. The tight time constraints with judging
and the show opening add pressure but also illustrates our ability to work to deadlines whilst
keeping quality at the forefront of our minds.

Hampton Court Show garden - Awarded Gold
Twig designed and built a conceptual garden based on the famous poet Rudyard Kipling’s
poem “My Boy Jack”.The Kipling Garden, with its overhead sails, waves of grasses and soaring sculpted birds,
narrates a Mother and Father’s search for news of their 18-year-old son Jack, lost in action in France
during World War 1. The Father, Rudyard Kipling, tracks down soldiers asking: “Have you seen my boy Jack?”
The garden incorporated a board walk to represent his long search; grasses symbolise the sea and
France is depicted by tall slim trees, a familiar sight lining so many French roads.
