Opioid Fast Facts

• A powerful sedative that relieves pain. • An addictive narcotic extracted from the poppy

plant. • Some opioids, such as morphine, percocet and

codeine, are used medically to relieve pain.

• Heroin, OxyContin, and Fentanyl are opioids. • Any opioid that is misused can shut down the

respiratory system causing death. • RCASA was founded in response to opioid-related

deaths and their impact on local families.

Opioid Addiction Prevention Bill (H.No.4056) School-related mandates

1. Create Substance Abuse & Ed. policies informed by DESE & MA Boards of Health

• School Committee Policy previously established (H.S only)

• Proposed revisions by RCASA/RPS for vaping & review for other school levels

2. Verbally Conduct Student Substance Abuse Screening

• 2016-2017: Pilot Verbal Screening Program

3. Incorporate Addiction & Substance Abuse Ed. into Driver’s Ed. curriculum & Concussion Safety Training

• H.S. Ed in compliance (M.S./E.S. –to review)

• Parent Ed. (State resources, local seasonal programs, pilot online training)
