understanding and overcoming
your dark sides
An astrological treatise by
Krishnaraj Divakaran
PREFACE
We have not seen many who have risen completely above negative emotions. (a Ramana Maharshi or a Mother Teresa or an Amritanandamayi doesn’t happen all too often!) But, we have seen people with loads of negative energy transforming into positive ones, thanks to the guidance received from within and out.
Let us list a few negative emotions: expressed/suppressed.
a) The instinct to inflict physical or emotional pain onto others/oneself or to witness it, and derive pleasure out of it.
b) Anger c) Lust d) Jealousy e) Greed f) Parasitism g) Pride, and the desire to be respectable, by any
means h) Gluttony and Substance addiction i) Laziness j) Obsoleteness(not enriching oneself and falling
into a monotonous subsistence.) As we know, the reason for all these being a simple but very deep reason: Lack of understanding about the interdependence of each and every existence in this
nature(compassion and responsibility to be fulfilling to oneself and others naturally arise out of this understanding)
This book will show you that even the most respectable of the society, the rich, the beautiful and even the greatest of saints, all have the negative traits. It just so happens that the wise ones, are in control. May be with hard effort in the beginning and later, with lesser effort. This book offers an astrological angle of the negative traits and propitiations to get over them, as much as one can.
A glimpse through these pages will make us understand that we can change our destiny of future births by prayers in this birth. Another interesting angle is that the lagna is you. 5
th is your
son. The 5th of 5
th, namely the 9
th is son’s son. The 9
th also
happens to be your dharma and father. Ie., your father’s dharma(9
th of 9
th ) will translate into your son! This shows
how much we are dependant on our fathers’ and grandfathers’ dharmas for what we are! Varahamihira has emphasized that the time of conception (adhana lagna) is the actual time of birth. The state of minds of the parents at this time plays a very important role in the formation of character of the offspring. In the modern world, when most children are just the offsprings of animal love, this awareness factor is very significant for the formation of a better future world.

Grahas Surya, Chandra and the Lagna(or the ascendant, the rising point in the horizon, at the time of your birth) are considered to be the 3 pillars of a horoscope. Surya is the natural Atmakaraka, the actual state of the self. Chandra is the Manokaraka (mind), or the signifactor for collection of emotions and thoughts. And the lagna, signifies our perception about the self, and its projections. Sukra is the karaka for sensual pleasure, while Kuja gives the drive to seek pleasure. Sani is the karaka for delays, pain and agony while his agent, Rahu is the master deceiver who lends the streak to seek the smoky zones. (Ketu, the agent of Kuja, is more of direct destruction and detachment). Budha is sarcastically witty and playful. And, Guru, is the master of dharma, the one who helps in knowing what is right and wrong.
The 12 Rasis, can be interpreted as:
Mesha- the adventurer, like a mountain goat. Rishabha- the settler, like the domesticated cattle. Mithuna- the playful, like a couple Karkataka- the withdrawn, like a crab Simha- the majestic, lion like. Kanya- the fertile, like a riverside virgin land. Thula- the measurer, symbolized by the balance. Vrischika- the self doubting, as a Scorpion Dhanus- the daring, symbolized by a Horse and Bow. Makara- the opportunist, a deer, or otherwise a crocodile
Kumbha- the seeker, like the man who bears an empty pot and Meena- the transient, as a fish couplet, in the last of the signs before the start of the next phase.
The 12 Bhavas(houses) can be interpreted as:
lagna or 1 = perception of the self and its projection, ie. the personality. 2 = speech and the family you administer. 3 = communications/expressions other than by speech(includes valour) and also indicates initiative. 4 = comforts you enjoy. 5 = your romantic nature and potency. 6 = the enmities you incur through your words and acts. 7 = sensuality and the vacuum you feel like fulfilling through partnerships 8 = your transparency, masked faces and love of the mysterious. 9 = your righteousness or dharma. 10 = karma and the esteem it generates. 11 = desire manifestation. 12 = frustrations, disgrace, loss of hope and salvation.
Purusharthas As you are aware, Dharma/philosophies, Artha/karma, Kama/desire and Moksha/salvation are the four Purusharthas. An attempt to translate them will be to the effect, Righteousness, Material resources, Desires and Salvation. In Bhavas(houses) 1, 5 and 9 represent the dharma triangle,
2, 6 and 10 – the artha/karma triangle, 3, 7 and 11 – the kama triangle and 4, 8 and 12 – the moksha triangle. Likewise in Rasis, Mesha, Simha and Dhanus represent Dharma, Rishabha, Kanya and Makara – Artha/Karma Mithuna, Thula and Kumbha – Kama and Karkataka, Vrishchika and Meena represent Moksha. In Nakshatras, the classification is as follows: Aswini, Bharani, first pada of Krittika, Magha, Pubba, first pada of Uthra, Moola, Purvashada, first pada of Uthrashada - Dharma Last 3 padas of Krittika, Rohini, first 2 padas of Mrigasirsha, last 3 padas of Uthra, Hasta, first 2 padas of Chitra, first 3 padas of Uthrashada, Sravana, first 2 padas of Dhanishta - Artha/Karma
Last 2 padas of Mrigasirsha, Ardra, first 3 padas of Punarvasu, last 2 padas of Chitra, Swati, Visakha’s first 3 padas , Dhanishta’s last 2 padas, Satabhisha, first 3 padas of Poorvabhadra – Kama Last pada of Punarvasu, Pushya and Aslesha, last pada of Visakha, Anuradha, Jyeshta, last pada of Poorvabhadra, Uthrabhadra, and Revathy - Moksha The Karaka for Dharma and Artha is Guru, Kama is Sukra and Moksha is Ketu.
Kama Desire for anything gets listed under Kama. Be it for money, sex or for Moksha! Whenever there is a preponderance of
Mithuna, Thula or Kumbha, or Bhavas 3, 7 and 11th, by
means of Lagna’s or Chandra’s sambandha(connection), the Kama factor will be very evident. It will be accented in the Kama nakshatras. Is the Kama, for sex or Moksha or what for, has to be seen from the disposition of the rasi/bhava lords and the grahas occupying them. Eg. for a Thula lagna native, whose 7
th lord Kuja is
positioned in 4th in Makara, in Uccha rasi, aspected by
uccha Guru from Karkataka, the sensual feelings will be very much within the moral boundaries. Whereas, for a Kumbha lagna native with Sukra in 7
th who is aspected by
Kuja from Rishabha, with no other compensations, will find it difficult to control his passionate desires. The general orientation of the native, is always to be kept in mind when we assess the kama aspect. Which is evident from his Lagna, Surya and Chandra. Eg. If a person has got Karkataka, a moksha sign as his lagna, with Guru in uccha and Chandra in Swakshetra posited there, even if other malefic streaks are present, his general orientation will take care of moralities, to an extent.
Artha/Karma One’s resources, inherited and accrued, and the way it builds up can be seen from 2
nd , 6
th and 10
th houses,
Rishabha, Kanya and Makara rasis and the artha nakshatras mentioned earlier. As these resources are the means by which most of the kamas can be attempted to be fulfilled, it assumes great significance in human lives. It is the karma. If a person has got predominance of Grahas in artha rasis, even if he is born in a moksha rasi, he will end up striving to
make material resources. And, conversely, if one has Artha rasi birth, but if the lord is in dharma or moksha position, the materialization of resources will be less. A comparison: Dhanu lagna, Sani in Rishabha Vs. Makara lagna, Sani in Dhanus. In the first case, even though the birth is in a Dharma sign, the second lord Sani is in an Artha sign, Rishabha. This happens to be the 6
th house, which is
an artha house, which indicates that situations will so arise that continuous effort will be made for acquisition of wealth. Whereas in the second case, the 2
nd lord, Sani is in 12
th, a
Moksha house and Dharma rasi indicating a detachment to the wealth making process. The spiritually oriented ones have always maintained great detachment to wealth as they felt that money brings chances for more attachment. So, in a spiritual sense, an ideal situation could be birth in a moksha/dharma rasi and artha house lord posited in moksha/dharma rasi/house.
Dharma Dharma, assumes maximum significance in Purusharthas as this is what will be determining the conscious attitude of the person. No matter how the Kama and Artha houses are disposed, if the Dharma rasis are strongly founded, it will ultimately lead to goodness. The first of Dharma houses is Lagna, which is the basic orientation or the way we would like to see our self. The second being the 5
th house which is the house of wise
discrimination of right and wrong. The third Dharma house in the 9
th house, which is the Upasana and the way we
conduct ourselves. The natural Dharma rasis in the Zodiac are Mesha, Simha and Dhanus. The Nakshatras involved are Aswini, Bharani, first pada of Krittika, Magha, Pubba,
first pada of Uthra, Moola, Purvashada, first pada of Uthrashada. Illustration: A Dhanus lagna native with his 7
th house
occupied by Sukra will find his desires well controlled if the 9
th lord(Upasana) Surya will occupy the 5
th house(Viveka)
Mesha, which happens to be his Uccha rasi.
Moksha The Moksha or salvation, indicators are House numbers: 4, 8 & 12, the Rasis: Karkataka, Vrischika & Meena, and the Nakshatras: last pada of Punarvasu, Pushya and Aslesha, last pada of Visakha, Anuradha, Jyeshta, last pada of Poorvabhadra, Uthrabhadra and Revathy. And, lets not forget the moksha karaka, Ketu. The study of Moksha parameters is most complex as two of the most difficult Dusthanas, namely 8
th and 12
th are
featuring in it. As a general rule, Dusthanas won’t hurt if they become inert zones. That is if they have no associations or aspects from/to other houses. A Dusthana lord will do well if he is posited in another Dusthana. This goes by the name, Vipareeta Rajayoga. 4
th house is the house of comforts. It is also the house
of simplicity or transparency you have. 8th is the house of
struggle and 12th is the house of Swakshayam or disgrace /
deterioration. A closer look at these 3 houses will show that Moksha is very much beyond contentment. An illustration: For a Meena lagna native, 4
th lord Budha is
in Thula, the 8th. Suppose the 12
th is occupied by Ketu and
its lord Sani is in 4th, we can safely predict that this person
has very less of comforts and is in a very stressed out situation. But with support from Karkataka, the 5
th lord
Chandra, and Kuja, the lord of Vrischika the 9th, this native
has got great chances for Moksha. Ie. even without peace of mind and contentment, moksha is possible. Another logical explanation could be that comfortable situations very rarely let us seek God. This is very much in contrast with the common understanding of spiritual masters’ teaching that, out of peace arises moksha.
Dusthanas- 6th , 8th and 12th houses As we have seen above, two houses involved in Moksha are Dusthanas, namely, 8
th and 12
th. Likewise Artha’s 6
th is
featuring in Dusthana, but Kama’s and Dharma’s no house is featuring. But out of our experience, we need to consider 3
rd and 7
th houses of Kama as secondary Dusthanas.
Dusthanas are houses who cause much of suffering. The show off nature and courage/timidity of the 3
rd house lands
us up in trouble many a time. So does the passionate nature of 7
th. This is why even 3
rd and 7
th are included as
the secondary Dusthanas. Through which factors life will turn desperate depends on which houses are related to these Dusthanas. If 2
nd lord is
in a Dusthana, money could be the problem or if it is the 7th,
marriage or desires could be the problem. If 9th lord is
associated with a Dusthana, we may have problems in Upasana. Imagine the plight of a person who is unable to pray too! But it is these Dusthanas which hold tremendous potential in leading us to Moksha. The Dusthanas will lead us to so much of frustration that we feel we are in no control at any point of time. We reach such a helpless level that we call
out loud to the God with no hope, and it just happens! May be this is what the masters say, Let go.
Trikonas- the goodness trine The lagna symbolizes what you are and what you look to be. The 5
th house denotes the Poorvapunnya and wisdom
and the 9th house denotes the Bhagya arising out of
upasana. 9th is also called the parapunnya or the punnya
you carry over to the next birth. As mentioned before, the lagna is you. 5
th is your son. The
5th of 5
th, namely the 9
th is son’s son. But then 9
th also
happens to be your dharma and father. Which means, your dharma will translate into your grandson! And your father’s dharma is your son. This shows how much we are very much dependant on our fathers’ and grandfathers’ dharmas for what we are! A question may arise, why this is not applicable in mother’s lineage. It is, but in a slightly material level. This could be so as Veda considers the Purusha as the Chaitanyam which sparks life in the otherwise potent but inert earth.
Significance of Wisdom A school of thought is that a strong 5
th house(wisdom) will
lead to maximum utilization of the potential available. With the support of Bhagya, the 9
th house and properly banking
on Knowledge (the 2nd
house), one can do right Karma(10th
house) which will result in Moksha(12th, the last of Moksha
houses)
Detailed analysis of negative emotions The Lagna, the Atmakaraka Surya and the Manokaraka Chandra being the 3 pillars of the horoscope, play the greatest roles in the basic orientation of the person. And, whenever there is a lack of equilibrium in the Purusharthas, or to be more precise, whenever there is an excess of Kama and Artha, it results in negative emotions. Another way of putting it is, when the Dharma and Moksha houses/signs fail to perform properly, negativity results. A word of caution here. Many a time we consider only the sthoola (apparent) and not the sookshma. Eg. we find the atmakaraka Surya in dharma rasi Mesha, its uccha rasi and pronounce the person as a very authoritative person. But if Surya’s amsaka is in a weakening sign like Thula, the person will become an egotist who would create sufferings to his associates. Or, we find a Thula lagna native with Sani in lagna, in Uccha and we pronounce him a Kroora(cruel). But suppose Sani receives an aspect from Guru in strength, he may become a very disciplined yogi too. So before jumping into conclusions we need to be aware of all angles.
1) The instinct to inflict physical or emotional pain onto others/oneself or to witness it, and derive pleasure out of it: When the lagna lord is weak and afflicted, oneself will suffer and when the lagna lord is strong but afflicted, others will suffer. Pain is ruled by Sani. It is triggerred by Kuja. Like how wind will accent fire. It has been observed that when Kuja, Surya, Rahu, Ketu and even Budha are present in the 2
nd house, speech of the
native results in hurting others. When the 10
th house is so afflicted, it is the actions that
hurt. Mars and Surya in 10th in an afflicted condition
produces tyrannical rulers, whereas a bad Sani + Rahu combination will give rise to a backstabber. Take the case of a Kumbha lagna native, with Kuja occupying the lagna and Sani in 3
rd in neecha. The 9
th lord
Sukra is in Neecha Meena and 10th is occupied by Rahu.
Guru is seen to occupy 12th Makara in Neecha. And,
imagine Chandra as without pakshabala. Here the Kama lagna with Kuja in it, and the lagna lord Sani in neecha, with no friendly support from Surya and Chandra will surely make this person negative. This negativity will be expressed out as per the situations that arise during the Dasa- Apaharas. 2) Lust: The combination of Sukra and Kuja is notorious for lust. While Sukra gives the desire, Kuja gives the drive. We need to consider Rahu, the eununchs Sani and Budha too. Sukra occupying Kuja’s or Sani’s rasi generally gives too much passion. Sukra in (mouddhya) combustion will either make
the native frigid or excessive. A subha drishti(aspect) from Guru will of course help in keeping things under control. 3) Pride, and the desire to be respectable, by any means:
True respect is a by-product of graceful actions. It can never be forced on. But, our natural weaknesses and our desire to be important drives us to do many things which make us feel like a rat later. The main villains here are the Lagna, 10
th house, 3
rd house,
Surya, Kuja and Guru. An affliction to these factors will always render the person an egoist. 10
th house being the
house of honour and esteem attains special significance. In normal cases, Guru will compensate for most of the evils. But suppose for Mesha lagna, Guru is in neecha in makara, the 10
th house, there will be many acts of pride which will
hurt oneself and others. The affliction can come from other Grahas like Rahu too. 4) Jealousy: When others have what you don’t have, or when you feel you have lesser than others, jealousy results. And a worse condition is feeling bad about other’s happiness. If Surya, Chandra and the Lagna are strong and un-afflicted, one will be content and jealousy is ruled out. Bhavas to watch out for are: Lagna, 3
rd, 5
th, 6
th, 7
th, and 12
th. As you must have
observed, too many houses are involved here that the control part gets tougher. Even Guru falls in status if he is in an artha or kama rasi. 5) Greed: Insatiable need of money, love or anything else can be classified under greed. This can turn quite negative, as this could never let you enjoy what you have as you are always in the process of looking for more. Mostly greed and
jealousy go hand in hand. If Sani takes the lead role in jealousy, it is Chandra in greed. Sukra, Kuja, Rahu, Ketu or even Surya fares bad if afflicted in Lagna, 2
nd, 3
rd, 6
th, 10
th,
and 11th which are the most important houses in this case.
6) Parasitism: Parasitism here is meant as: To derive one’s energy by sucking the life out of the host. Self is lagna. Generally, The descendant or 7
th shows our
attitude to others. 2nd
house is the house of our family we administer, 3
rd is our co-borns, 4
th is motherly relations,
uncles and relationships through marriage, 5th is offspring,
6th is the house of dependants/servants and enemies, 7
th is
your love relationships and marriage, 8th is your legacy, 9
th
is your fatherly/priestly relations, 10th is your political
relationships, 11th your elder co-borns and 12
th your
enemies relations. When the lagna has a healthy relationship with the concerned house, the relationships pertaining to that house will be good. Eg. if lagna and 5
th lord are friendly and have a
good relationship, then there will be Putra soukhyam. If lagna lord and 6
th lord are in friendly terms there wont be
much of trouble from enemies. Likewise, suppose a weak lagna or its lord is afflicting Surya or 9
th / 9
th lord, then there will be trouble to father due to the
native. So, who is the host and who is the parasite need to be seen from the lagna and the concerned house relationship and who gets weak in the process. . 7) Anger: Look out for Surya, Kuja, Sani and Rahu. The houses to be considered are Lagna, 3
rd, 6
th, 5
th, 10
th and the 2
nd.
3rd
is the house of obstinancy, courage and its expression. 6
th is the house of enmities. 5
th is the discretion and
wisdom. 10th – esteem, 2
nd is speech. Rasis to be
considered are Mesha, Simha, Dhanus and the above houses’ rasis. How cold or how volatile you will be depends on the nature of Grahas. Sani is cold whereas Rahu or Kuja are very aggressive. 8) Gluttony/Substance Addiction: It has been found that emotional factors behind gluttony and addiction are same. Depression, boredom, restlessness, and lack of outlet of creative energy. Physical factors include excess of bilious energy, indicated by 6
th house and 2
nd house being occupied by Sani, Kuja,
Sukra or Surya. Rahu in 5
th, 9
th or lagna is also a major driving factor. Guru
in 2nd
house will make one enjoy food, but one will control the intake as age progresses. One’s tastes for food can be observed from ones 2
nd and 3
rd
house’s satvic nature. More malefic influences in these houses lead to non-vegetarianism of all forms. Here 9
th
(dharma) and 5th (viveka) houses also play a significant
role. Sukra in watery signs, influenced by Kuja, Rahu or Sani is a primary factor for substance addiction. With a weak Chandra, one may not be able to come back to normalcy, if addicted. Many a time, addiction has led natives with Chandra- Sani combination to insanity and even suicides. 9) Laziness and Obsoleteness (not enriching oneself and falling into a subsistence.) Other than our basic factors, namely the Lagna, Surya and Chandra, the following factors are very important: Sani has been described as “Mando alasa:”
Kuja has been described as the Oja karaka, which means the driving energy. 6
th house(house of lack of focus and laziness), 3
rd
house(the house of drive), and the 10th(the house of
karma). People with Sani in lagna are supposed to be very slow and lazy unless otherwise fortified. Kumbha lagna people with an afflicted Mesha and Karkataka are seen to be the most lazy people. Guru in 6
th is another yogam for laziness.
Benefic grahas like Guru or Sukra coming into 3
rd, reduces
the veeryam(valour or virility) of a person.
Propitiations Normally, it is when we have the wrath of Grahas, we consult a Jyotisha. When nothing else works out, we blindly follow the Jyotisha and the Priest and do any unreasonable thing they suggest. Mostly the advices rendered will be like, “you are having such a bad period because of this and that, and there is a small chance that you may get ok if you do these propitiations.” The desperate client will do anything and everything possible as he has no other go. 70 % cases, the propitiations fail and yet there wont be much complaints, as it was previously told that it may not work due to the severity of the bad period. Or, because by this time a new problem would have cropped up! The propitiations mentioned below are inexpensive, self do-able, surely helpful in general body and mind health. And if it works for you to rectify the bad periods, it means Astrology works. Find out for yourself:
Propitiations for an afflicted Surya When Surya is afflicted, you need to do at least 20 minutes of sunbath daily. Wheat intake has to be increased. Red chilly to be avoided. (Green chilly can be taken.) Copper utensils to be preferred for cooking. Drinking water kept at least for 2 hours in Copper vessels will be very beneficial for all diseases Surya causes. Surya namaskaram surely helps. Words to be honoured, or false promises not to be given. Practice real dignity but check the haughtiness factor. Siva bhava is to be worshipped. Om Gurubhyo Nama: 1116 times is the mantra and the bhava is Parabrahma Vishnu.
Propitiations for an afflicted Sukra Treating all women like mother and keeping away from addictive substances(including food for which we have obsession) will be good for Sukra afflicted people. Simple dressing, lesser show off and learning music and art forms will help more. Vanpayar(lobia) and honey + tender coconut water are effective for virility. Annapoorna and Lalita are highly potent bhavas of Sukra. Usable Mantra: Sree devea nama: 1005 times. Propitiations for an afflicted Sani Yoga is the best for the Yogiswara. All forms of disciplined physical work would be appreciated. Cleanliness(personal as well as surroundings) matters. So does being helpful to lesser fortunate. Sesame oil application under the feet and all over the body will have special effects in taking care of alasyam.(laziness) Yogeswaraya nama: 1007 times is a miraculous mantra. Bhava is Hari Hara Suta. Propitiations for an afflicted Rahu The ultimate deceiver will do better without garlic and with lots of turmeric in food. Kadali pazham(a variety of banana) and Milk + ginger + Jaggery is another good combination which could be taken after prayers to Rahu. Other propitiations include not criticising others without real reasons, adhering to truth and nature worship. Mantra 108 times, is Prakrityae nama: and bhava is Mother Earth.
Propitiations for an afflicted Ketu The fiery Ketu, the agent of Kuja, will cool a bit if you meditate regularly. It helps if you avoid hot and spicy food. Gandhiji was born in Kanya lagna, a very fertile artha sign. It is also known for its steady, systematic, methodological nature. A notable kanya lagna physical characteristic is drooping shoulders. Gandhiji was born in the nakshatra Aslesha. Aslesha is a star known for its slow and steady entwining/influencing nature, be it for positive or for negative purposes. Chandra in swakshetra, karkataka with a meena navamsa is strong though it has the weakness of Krishna paksha. Lagna Surya which would have made him a fiery aggressive man, got tempered as it is neecha aaropi (going towards neecha in thula) and due to occupation of the cool Kanya, and the navamsa in another Budha sign, Mithuna. Being the lord of 12th, the house of frustrations and losses, Surya in lagna conferred on him the temperament to suffer and to stand for a cause. Still, one can find a kind of excessive seeking of suffering also through this combination. May be this was his moksha marga. Chandra in Swakshetra in Karakataka, with its navamsa in the Gurukshetra Meena is very favourable, especially as it is posited in the Sarvabheeshta sthaanam, namely the 11th. This favours desire fulfillment, though we can find some clouding and masking of desires due to the Rahu yoga of the Krishna paksha Chandra. This also gives a kind of Unmada yoga. (tendency for hysteria) Kama(desires): Bhavas 3, 7 and 11, the rasis Mithuna, Thula and Kumbha, the grahas Sukra, Kuja, Sani and Rahu are the key indicators of Kama. 3rd lord is Kuja, who is occupying a Kama rasi, Thula, along with Sukra and Budha. Anytime there is a relationship between Kuja and Sukra, there is an accentuation of sensual passions. Here the yoga is in both rasi as well as in navamsa which strengthens the point
further. A positive relief is that the yoga has the drishti from Guru(though he is the 7th lord) 3rd house, which shows the drive, has got Sani in it, which will slow it down, but doesn't kill it. 7th lord is Guru occupying 8th, a dusthana. This indicates the denial of a platform for sensual gratification. Guru in swakshetra navamsa makes it more satvic. 11th lord Chandra has been discussed before. The goodness trine, 1, 5 and 9: Lagna lord is Budha, who is in a favourable bhava, the vaksthaana, the 2nd. (Budha here is Karmadhipa too) He has association with another trine lord, Sukra which is very favourable. Budha's navamsa from the rasi lagna's 5th house, the house of wisdom further accents the goodness. 5th lord Sani is in 3rd house, an ishta bhava for Sani and in Swakshetra navamsa. But we need to see the negative presence of Ketu in the 5th, which ofcourse brings problems too in decision making. 9th lord, Sukra is in excellent strength by being in Swakshetra in Rasi as well as Navamsa. His yoga with the lagna and karmadhipa Budha (dharmakarmadhipa yoga) has conferred on him qualities par excellence, though the desire factor is accented by the yoga with Kuja. Gandhiji constantly tried to rise above his kamas and pursue the path of Dharma to seek moksha. We have much to learn from " the small obstinate man".

Godse was born on the nakshatra Uttaraphalguni (uthram) whose lord is Surya. Uthra is known for its commitment to causes and partnering. If it is for the wrong or for the right, needs to be seen from the nakshatra lord Surya's disposition and other combinations. In Godse's case, Surya is the vikrama lord in the house of losses, the dusthana 12
th.
Here the lagna is Mithuna. Its lord Budha is in 12th house in combination with Vikramadhipa (3rd lord) Surya and the eternally doubting Rahu. Budha being in vargottama confers on the native, many good qualities also like sharp intelligence and association with knowledgeable scholars. The lagna is occupied by Kuja, the lord of 6th and 11th. 6th house being the house of enemies, litigations and diseases Kuja gets more strength for his natural valour. Kuja in lagna aspected by Sani, the lord of 8th and 9th, gives one high inflammability. (agni- maarutha) Chandra, the second lord is posited in 4th, in Kanya, along with Guru, the karma lord forming a Gaja kesari yoga, though not in full strength. This gives leadership qualities and a strong mind. The drishti of the 5th lord Sukra in exaltation is another very positive aspect. Dharma: For a Mithuna lagna person, the dharma lord Sani happens to be the lord of 8th as well. Anytime dusthanas like 8
th is
influencing the 9th, there could be confusions/lack of clarity regarding rights and wrongs. Here Sani has gone into his neecha rasi, mesha which means chances for getting into the wrong track, for even a good reason is very high. When the 3rd, vikrama lord has also gone into dusthana the expressions of dharma also could be violent. Karma: 10
th lord, Guru is in 4
th, fully aspecting 10
th itself is good.
His association with 2nd
lord Chandra is also good. The positioning of Sukra(though duritha bhavadhipa) in 10
th is
extremely good as he is in his Uccha. Here is one man who is a perfectionist in his karma. Dusthanas: 6th lord Kuja in lagna aspects by Sani. 6th occupied by Ketu 8
th lord Sani in neecha, drishti from Gulikan. 12
th lord in 10
th.
12th occupied by 3rd lord Surya, Budha and Rahu. All the dusthanas are very active in this horoscope. Hence the suffering. It can be seen that only one Graha is in Dharma rasi. So that grahas significance is very high. Unfortunately Sani, the graha in Dharma is in neecha. In Godse's case misunderstood Dharma caused by Sani, high inflammability caused by Kuja- Sani, negative expression of valour by 3rd lord Surya in 12th etc caused the undesired effects, including the murder of Mahatma Gandhi whose idealisms differed much from Godse's.

Ramalinga Raju was born in Vrischika lagna, the natural 8th
house of the zodiac. This rasi is a moksha sign, but with a self defeating attitude. (the infamous self stinging scorpion when defeated) The lagna lord Kuja is in an excellent position, the dhana sthaana 2
nd and in the navamsa of
athibandhu Surya. But the association with the shadowy planet Rahu is not desirable. The lagna has the full aspect from Guru, which reduces the negativity of the horoscope. The manokaraka Chandra is weak and makes him dependant on others for his happiness due to Krishna paksha and the positioning in 6
th, a dusthana. The aspect of
Sani from 12th house, further accents the negativity. This
gets worse as Chandra in this case, is the lord of Upasana and Dharma also. That is when Mr. Raju gets into difficult moods, his mind doesn’t allow him to do even prayers! Being in the Nakshatra Bharani lorded by Lord Yama, there will be tremendous internal conflicts when deviating from idealistic situations. The atmakaraka Surya is occupying the 10
th
house(esteem), Swakshetra Simha and in Guru’s navamsa. This gives a subtly proud nature which desires respect more than money. The positive is that, he can derive tremendous atmachaitanyam through performing his duties. Kama /desires: 3
rd lord Sani, and 7
th lord Sukra are both in a yoga in a
kama rasi Thula. This happens to be the 12th, a dusthana.
The 11th lord, the next consideration, is also occupying the
Kama house 11th, but in Uccha wit Swakshetra navamsa.
These points coupled with the influence of a weak Dustha Chandra and Surya posited in 10
th will surely make the
person desirous of worldly respect and sensual too. The influence of Guru in Uccha vargottama in Dharma sthaana will take care of all this other than when very bad periods would run, when what is required is more upasana and sticking to idealisms.
Sufferings, the result of Dusthanas: 6
th, 8
th and 12
th are the Dusthanas responsible for
sufferings. In Raju’s case, 6th has Chandra, 8
th has Ketu
and 12th has Sukra and Sani. Which means during the
periods of these grahas he may find himself in situations which lead him to sufferings. Presently Raju is running the period of 6
th house Chandra in Rahu dasa. 6
th is more about
financial liabilities, cases and diseases. So its quite natural that he has seen himself getting into all this now. Post mortems do help. Atleast for the others around. When bad periods run, we need to depend more on the superior power and obtain grace. The goodness factors: The lord of wisdom, ie the 5
th lord Guru is Vargottama in
9th, the bhagya sthaana in his Uccha kshetra Karkataka. It
is aspected by lagna lord Kuja. As the 5th house is poorva
punnyam and 9th is the para punnyam Raju will surely
benefit from all his present birth’s struggle in his next birth. Raju is of course a worldly wise man, no matter where his Rahu dasa’s Chandra apaharam has landed him in! He will emerge stronger and wiser if he doesn’t sting himself with his self defeating attitude during the present period (upto august 2009). After June 2010, when this Guru dasa starts, Raju’s fortunes will soar high, spiritually for sure, and materially too.

The persevering karma rasi Makara is rising as lagna for Swami Vivekananda, and in it is posited, Yogakaraka(lord of a trikona and kendra) Sukra and Dharmadhipa Budha. Sukra gathers more strength as he has an Uccha navamsa also. Lagna being a karma rasi, with the lord of dharma, 9th lord, and the karma and self esteem(10th) in it, will make the person a dharmika karma yogi. Lord of lagna, Sani is in Dharma sthana(9th), in conjunction with the manokaraka Chandra. In navamsa also, Sani is in strength in mitra kshetra, in budhi sthana. Sani has given strong spiritual and yogic tendencies and opportunities to the native. Surya, the ashtamadhipa is in vargottama and in 12th forming a vipareeta rajayogam. The pitru karaka, Surya though in vargottama, as is in a dusthana, accounted for his father's not very long span of life. The same Surya being the lord of Ayu sthanam could be held responsible for Swami's short life span.(a strong lagna and 3, 6 or 11 posited with malefics normally give a long life) Krishna paksha Chandra being in 9th, the dharma sthana, in Hasta Nakshatra, with Lagnadhipa Sani makes the person sensitive and gives tremedous spiritual yearning. Karma is occupied by Guru, which is fully aspected by Kuja who is in Swakshetra in Vidyakshetram. Guru is in bandhu navamsa in 11th bhava. This favours success in karma, in this case spiritual pursuit. Kama: 3rd lord Guru in karma sthaana, 7th lord Chandra who is in dharma, the 9th and the 11th lord, being Kuja who is in a dharma rasi in swkshetra with a drishti from Guru, gave the Swami desires mainly connected with dharma. If you take the natural kama rasis also, ie mithuna, tula and kumbha they have a tremendous dharma(associations with dharma rasis/bhavas and Guru) sambandham.
Dusthanas: the lord of 6th Budha is in lagna, who is also the dharma lord. Which implies in this case, that when diseases, debts and enemies trouble, the dharma thoughts intensify. 6th lord in lagna surely gives the above mentioned problems. 8th lord, Surya gave sufferings on account of Father and diseases of the heat, whereas the 12th lord(house of restrictions) Guru being in 10th in Sukra kshetra brought much struggle and frustrations. Swami’s famous statement- “evolution through struggle..” must have been inspired by his personal experience. More on struggles: Vivekananda, before his acquaintance with Sri Ramakrishna was full of confusion. 5
th lord Sukra
though excellently posited, 5th house, the bhava of
intellect/wisdom is occupied by the most difficult of all, namely Khantakaraka Ketu and Gulika. This surely gives lack of clarity and confusions. “Expansion is life and Contraction is death” – Swami Vivekananda. Vivekananda’s lagna is makara, which is the karma bhava of the natural zodiac. And in lagna as we discussed before, the lord of wisdom, 5th and the lord of dharma, 9th is posited. The struggles mentioned above and the blocades idealism genereally brings, were eventually overcome through constant search, sadhana and ofcourse divine support. 5
th /10
th lord Sukra, 9
th lord Budha and Guru in 10
th
surely helped in this. Another notable aspect is Kuja’s drishti into 10
th, which gave him a steely resolve. (Swami’s
tremendous scientific temperament is also seen from this)

When a person has a Chandra – Mangala yoga(with the

amassed by the native. But then, when the person has
got the 10th
lord Guru in 7th
in swakshetra and in 10th
it
is Sukra in Uccha kshetra, we need to agree that this
person’s political career will be fruitful to the state
whatever be the other negatives. This is so for sure, as
this person’s Guru dasa will start from 2012 August.
Jayalalitha’s nakshatra is Makha- 3rd
pada, indicating
a nature to express aristocracy. In a right direction the
Nakshatra has got tremendous potential, but with
wrong combinations, may prove otherwise.
Her lagna is Mithuna, with the lord Budha in Bhagya
position. The drishti of Guru into the lagna makes it
stronger. Surya, is in a rather weak state, though in
Bhagya, as it is Satrukshetra in both rasi and navamsa.
Indicating, a very raw form of ego, which needs lot of
evolution. Surya’s weak positioning in 9th
, will
normally confer hypocrisy in religious expressions and
personality. Chandra is in a strong state though 3rd
house yoga with Kuja(the earlier mentioned Chandra
mangala yoga) gives excess of vikrama and
duschilkyam.A positive feature is that this combination
gets the drishti of Guru vis a vis the 9th
drishti. True,
Guru has got the dreaded Kendradhipathya dosha, but
still he is powerful enough to confer rajayogas
otherwise indicated.
Kuja is the owner of 6th
and 11th
, thus becoming a first
rate malefic. But if you take the case if Sani, who is
occupying the house of wealth, as he is in
moolatrikona navamsa in dharma from radix lagna, he
will lose much of his negative with time.
Another very intersting position is that of Rahu’s.
When the house of friendship, ie the 11th
house is
occupied by Rahu and in navmasa he is in 6th
from
radix lagna, friendships will most definitely prove to
be head aches for JJ. Likewise, the house of wisdom,
the 5th
house is occuped by Ketu, who again has got a
12th
bhava position from radix lagna in navamsa chart.
This also will give troubles in decision making.
Getting over the negatives:
9th
lord Sani in 2nd
will perform better if she observes
silence, in place of wrong utterances.
Fasting on Saturdays and Mondays also will be of
tremendous help as 2nd
house is the house of food too.
Surya needed to be strengthened through a proper,
“who am i?” enquiry and through Mahakala worship.
Guru pooja also is another method. Wrong friendships
to be avoided. Intake of lot of tumeric will
automatically set in this. Chandra mangala yoga to be
in a positive direction, she needs to do lot of writing
works. (3rd
house is the house of writing) Giving good
exercise to the hands also will help. To help her in
taking right decisions, before every decision, praying
to Ganesha will help ease the Ketu issue.
With these propitiations she can usher in more peace
and meaning into her life. And, we may see a good
leader for Tamil nadu and for India.

Sankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati, one of the most favoured disciple of the epitome of knowledge, Late Sankaracharya Chandrasekhara Saraswati got into controversy when he was arrested on certain issues. Jayendra Saraswati has Simha as lagna indicating, natural leadership qualities. The lagna lord Surya is in 12
th, the
house of frustrations and losses, and spirituality too. Surya’s vargottama surely gives strength, but the effects of dusthana position can’t be discounted for. Lagna is occupied by the 3
rd and 10
th lord Sukra, who is the
natural signifactor of sensuality. Sukra’s vargottama again adds more strength to him. We have to clearly note the drishti of Sani from the 7
th to Sukra, which increases the
sensual element. Chandra is posited in 6
th house, another dusthanam, with
the drishti of Kuja from 3rd
house. It clearly gives an aggressive temperament with mood fluctuations. Guru in 3
rd house in Sukra kshetra is again not very
favourable, but his association with Kuja, the lord of Bhagya and Dharma is auspicious. 5
th house, the house of wisdom is occupied by Rahu, who
also is in vargottama as in navamsa also he is Dhanu. But Rahu in 5
th gives a smoky wisdom, normally seen in spies
and politicians. 7
th house(Kama) Saturn in Moolatrikona is definitely good,
but the drishti of Sukra there is not very desirable. Now, what this made this person the favourite of the great Chandrasekhara Saraswati? Note the position of the strong 2
nd lord Budha in 11
th, in Swaksetra. It gives the person
extraordinary verbal skills and scriptural knowledge. In Sookshma, ie the navamsa, it may be noted that Budha is in Dusthana 6
th, along with Gulika. It may be also observed
that Gulika is occupying the 2nd
house in Rasi.
Overcoming the negatives: Lagnadhipa Surya is vargottama in 12
th, which means that
through spiritual observances of the “Arka Sambhu” can give positive results. 10
th lord Sukra as is in lagna can grant positive results if any
art forms are practised. Rahu in 5
th can be made positive by assiting to create a
more greener nature. (Dhanu is araamam too) Sani in 7
th can be made made use of in a more positive way
through yoga and silence. Chandra in 6
th can be more positive through fasting and
through liquid foods. Guru in bhagya in navamsa can be harnessed by strict adherece to conventional dharma. The Sankaracharya of Kanchi is the Hindu Pope of the region. We can never know from outside if he overcame his negatives and became the one his Guru would have wanted him to be. Lets hope for it. th amsa. Chandra’s association with Sani
who is in neecha rasi and Chandra’s neecha amsa to be noted indicating a mind frame which is very sensitive to the sufferings. The Guru drishti makes the combination a very humane one. Lagna if Dhanu, with Guru not in a malefic state normally makes a person very God fearing and humanitarian. In Mother’s case, Dhanu lagna lord Guru is in a very favourable position 11
th, with an amsa in Karkataka, its
Uccha rasi. Surya the 9
th lord in 9
th itself with another trikona lord Kuja
is a very powerful Rajayoga. The lord of Dharma combining with the lord of Wisdom makes a person very practical about carrying on with his/her Dharma.
The 3 pivotal points of a horoscope, namely the Lagna, Surya and Chandra are in Dharma Rasis. This indicates the person’s basic nature. The Karma lord Budha is in karma position itself in Uccha Kshetra again indicating the dedication to Karma. Negatives: Sani in house of budhi would surely have given lack of clarity many a time to Mother Teresa. Especially because it is afflicting the manokaraka Chandra. 6
th house is occupied by Rahu which indicates diseases due
to wrong eating habits and lack of cleanliness. (may not be apparent as Rahu is an expert masker) The 11
th lord Sukra in a dusthana, 8
th shows that her friends
may not have been as good as they aparently looked to be. (eg Charles Keating, the fraudster). Also, her understanding of sex and sexual matters would have been very ordinary. Surya in 9

The study of Madonna’s chart is very interesting as it
is a strange combination of sensuality and spirituality.
Madonna was born with the dominating Simha lagna.
The lagna lord Surya is in 12th
house, a difficult house
for Surya as the dominating nature gets a beating in the
12th
. There, Surya is in association with his enemy
Sukra, indicating the difficulties of Surya, made more
complex through Sukra’s sensuality.
Her birth star is Pubba, the nakshatra ruled by Sukra.
Sukra thus gains more relevance. And, it is in neecha
amsa. Indicating very complex issues related to
sensuality.
Chandra in lagna along with Budha and Gulikan,
accents the artistic qualities and sensitivity. Chandra
being in a sthira rasi, gives fixity in purpose, and
Budha lends adaptibility and finesse. Chandra’s
amsaka in Budha kshetra and Budha’s in Chandra
kshetra adds more meaning to this association.
The association of the Lagna lord and 10th
lord well
aspected by the Bhagya (9th
) lord Kuja, ensured
professional success though in 12th
house. May be, the
fact that there is an underlying sexual-spiritual(12th
house) theme in almost all her works, has been
instrumental in her professional success.
4th
house, the house of Sukha, is occupied by another
difficult planet, Sani. Sani occupying the 7th
house(madana) in navamsa from radix lagna, again
indicates, where the dissatisfaction is rooted in.
Her Dharma lord(9th) Kuja in 9th
itself along with
Ketu(the agent of Kuja), fully aspected by Guru, the
lord of 5th
, the poorvajanmapunnya lord, and Rahu
makes her dharma, the righteousness, very strange but
solid and working. Also, the parivartana yoga between
Surya the lagna lord and Chandra the 12th
lord, is a
very good yoga for spiritual development. We can find
the reasons of her evolution from a sensual dancer to a
Kabballah practitioner from all this.

Madana kshetra(7th) along with Sukra and Rahu.
Sukra is a very important planet in this horoscope as he
is not just the lagna lord, but as he is in 7th
, constituting
a malavya yoga(though afflicted). Also Sani, the
yogakaraka’s positioning in 9th
is very significant.
Whenever a person has a very active 8th
house, it gives
him a mystical nature, or he will researh more on the
subtleties. 8th
is not just about the death, but also about
the mystery of life. 9th
lord Budha coming into this
house of research gave him the temperament to dig
more into this.
And, when a person has Sani in 9th
, the house of
dharma, the person may not be bothered about getting
the approval of the society about his perception of
rights and wrongs or the dharma.
When there is Kuja in 12, the house of Sayana
(pleasures of the bed) and when it is in the 7th
amsa
from the radix lagna, the sexual theme is getting
accented.
Regarding their understanding of the subject, there is a
famous “A” joke about Freud and Jung. It goes like
this:
“ S Freud had a desire to mate with an elephant. He
went in search and finally found one. He finds a
ladder, climbs her up, and starts the game. Jung who
was witnessing all this climbed up a coconut tree and
started masturbating. A coconut from this tree fell on
the elephant’s head and she said “ouch!” And Freud
asked her “did I hurt you baby?”
12th
lord Budha in 8th
constitutes a vipareeta rajayoga.
If he was right or not in his beliefs, we may not know,
but we can be sure that through his research or
sadhana, he must have evolved a lot. A major fact to be
considered here is that Sani, the lord of the house of
wisdom, of 5th, is in 9th,
another trine. Sani is a
yogakaraka for Tula, and thus becoming more
beneficial. We need to remember that 5th
is poorva
janma and 9th
is the next one. Whenever there is an
benefic connection between 1, 5 and 9, the native will
be fulfilling the karmic destiny promised in the past
births.

the Karmadhipa Kuja who is in the house of Vikrama,
is in a positive form as he is in 10th
in navamsa from
radix lagna. He receives no evil aspect. We should
consider that this Kuja is the lord of wisdom too.
Had this Kuja been negative, instead of movies, he
would have used his creative intelligence in real life
situations, which could have yielded rather difficult
situations for the world.

LK Advani is born with the ascendant/lagna as
Vrischika. The lord of lagna Kuja/mars being in the
12th house, the house of frustrations, generally the
horoscope indicates hardships/struggles. The lagna is
occupied by Sani and Ketu, once again accenting the
delays and ostacles. But sani being in vargottama, as
it occupies the same rasi in navamsa also, will surely
confer good results finally.
The house of wisdom and poorva punnya, the 5th, is
occupied by Guru in moolatrikona. Guru is in Uccha
navamsa, in the 10th house from radix lagna. This
Guru is aspecting Sani, which should intensify Sani's
good results.
10th house is the house of honours and position and its
lord Surya is in 12th a dusthana. He is in Uccha
navamsa in 6th from radix lagna, which means that
power and position will be always strugglesome for
this person.
The significant thing about navamsas in this horoscope
is that Surya, Guru and Chandra have come into
exaltations in the navamsa. They are well backed up by
Sani's vargottama and Budha's swakshetra.
LK Advani will have to brave n number of troubles for
power. His health will deteriorate badly after 4 years,
and he can expect an accident too.
Overcoming dark sides:
Sani in lagna generally makes a person "alasa:"(lazy).
But in Advani's case as this Sani is in vargottama. ie in
same rasi in navamsa also and as the
Karmaadhipa(10th lord) Surya though in 12th, the
house of losses/spiritual nature, is in
Uccha(exaltation) navamsa the basic nature of laziness
will be overcome through will power, discipline
and persistence.
Chandra the manokaraka in 6th house, indicates a mind
which is sensitive.. but its occupation of the uccha rasi
in navamsa indicates, how through reflecting on ones
own limitations, he could emerge as a stronger person.
Sukra in neecha in rasi in 11th, indicates an unfair
friend circle, from where he had to face lot of
problems. But a drishti (aspect) of Guru has/will save
him from disgrace and will give him opportunities to
derive meaning out of any relationship.
To sum it up, here is a person who has acquired more
qualities than inherited.

SURYA KUJA
Paramahamsa Yogananda was born in the Magha nakshatra. This nakshatra is a strange combination of Surya, the ‘aham’ feeling, Ketu, the renunciate and Pitru, the ancestral experience. It normally makes a person in the material world do things for appreciation or atleast for a feeling of aristocrasy or it makes a renunciate who gets a taste of the higher life. Of the Gandantha trine nakshatras Aswini, Makha and Moola, Magha is the most confused and hence tries harder to dive deeper into spiritual practices. In Paramahamsa Yogananda’s case, lagna is Simha, a dharma sign. The lord Surya is posited in 5
th house, a
trikona in strength. Surya’s neechamsaka, must have been the chief worry for Guruji, as it implied that he could never exercise power in a dignified way. Chandra is also in lagna which makes all the 3 pivotal points to occupy Dharma rasis. Which indicates that the person will not move away from the dharma marga, in normal case. Well, we all expect all these beneficial positions in holy men’s horoscopes, but what interests us most is the positioning of Guru and Kuja in a dusthana 8
th house. When
9th lord occupies 8
th, it normally gives a person with a non-
conformist dharma. An experimentor. Guru, the graha of orthodoxical knowledge going in to 8
th also gives
unorthodoxical temperament. Rahu in the house of dharma accents this. Yoga is the science of life and death. And who experiments on this more than a Yogi? So, it is very natural that PY’s horoscope has a very unique and blessed 8
th house, the
house of death. Guru in 8th is in moolatrikona, along with the
dharma/bhagyadhipa Kuja. The association is fully aspected by Sani from the 2
nd.
12
th lord Chandra in lagna and Rahu in 9
th must have been
the key indicators which forced PY to seek his destiny abroad. The Vak karaka Budha’s occupation of the trikona 5
th with Surya and the aspect of 5
th and 9
th lords into the 2
nd
house which gives Sani a very changed constitution, were responsible for his highly acclaimed words.
