Insight from Leadership

5

We are on a quest to understand and

improve our world, a world full of miracles

where life is both fragile and yet sometimes

shockingly resilient. When a spindly, wobbly

newborn giraffe pulls itself up to take its first

unsure steps; when a baby orangutan grips

tightly to her mom as she climbs high into

her nest; when a dolphin calf rises, nudged

by his mother, to the surface to take its first

breath, we witness how spirit and willpower

can overcome uncertainty and frailty.

Positive change — particularly in today’s

fast-paced world — requires vision, a clear

plan and a fair amount of that spirit and

willpower. Indianapolis Prize Winner

Dr. Carl Jones noted that progress comes

from “people with drive and vision, who can

work with others and develop collaborations.”

Dr. Jones reminds us that small steps can

be the start of a great journey. That’s certainly

been the experience of the Indianapolis Zoo,

and our odyssey has taken many remarkable

twists and turns as we have grown from a

young and fragile Indianapolis nonprofit to

a globally important and significant wildlife

conservation organization. And 2016 was

a year during which we saw many of our

dreams mature and bear fruit.

In 2016, your Indianapolis Zoo announced

the sixth Winner of the Indianapolis Prize —

the world’s leading award for animal

conservation — in London, 4,000 miles

away from the city whose name the Prize

bears. In 2016, your Indianapolis Zoo made

headlines across the globe when orangutan

Rocky astonishingly redefined what we

know about the evolution of speech through

his mimicry of human sounds. In 2016, your

Indianapolis Zoo celebrated the birth of a

rare Sumatran orangutan … a new Hoosier

redhead who has won hearts and inspired

change during her first year of life. And

in 2016, your Indianapolis Zoo Board

enthusiastically directed staff to bring

another baby orangutan (and his mother)

to Indianapolis because he needed our

expertise and resources in order to flourish

and thrive.

In 2016, your Indianapolis Zoo built a

stronger global conservation community by

establishing and implementing a new field

conservation grant program that supports

critically important initiatives throughout the

world. Those programs will play a key role in

determining what our world looks like years

from now for macaws in Costa Rica, for

Amur tigers in Russia, for moose in Minnesota,

and for dozens of other species critical to

the biodiversity of our ecosystems.

Today’s conservationists are literally defining

the world we will live in tomorrow … but so

are you. As we prepare for that future we

do so with joy, enthusiasm, and confidence.

We are making a difference for wildlife. We

are turning our vision into reality. We are

defining and rewriting the future, because

we — and you — are the Indianapolis Zoo,

and that’s just what we do!

Indianapolis PrizeThe world’s leading award for animal conservation

A love of the world’s wild creatures often starts at a young age. The small child whose parents take him to the Zoo and let him gaze into the eyes of a lion cub, marvel at a majestic elephant, and watch in awe at an orangutan traveling overhead — that makes a lasting impression and hopefully a lifetime of connection to wildlife conservation. The same is true for 2016 Indianapolis Prize Winner Dr. Carl Jones. At six years old, his earliest dream was to have his own zoo with every species of animal in the world. The realization that he couldn’t manage his youthful dream led Carl to a new goal which turned into a lifetime of saving species.

Carl won the coveted Indianapolis Prize, the world’s leading award for animal conservation, because his lifetime of work exemplifies what it truly means to save a species from extinction. In a first for a Winner announcement, the Prize team left American soil to reveal that Carl Jones had won what has been referred to by many as the “Nobel Prize for animal conservation.”

A humble Welshman, Carl noted that he stood on the shoulders of those who inspired and mentored him, people with a common message. According to Carl, “Individuals can, and do, make a difference. It is not committees and organizations that create change but people with drive and vision, who can work with others and develop collaborations.”

It is with remarkable collaboration and support from Eli Lilly and Company that the Prize has flourished during the last decade since its inception. And Cummins Inc. has made it possible to present a glamorous Gala in Indianapolis where Carl accepted his award and closed his acceptance speech with thoughts from Welsh poet Dylan Thomas who penned these encouraging words for his own dying father.

Do not go gentle into that good night,Old men should burn and rave at close of day;Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Thomas’ message serves as a metaphor for Carl in his fight to save species from extinction.

The 2016 Indianapolis Prize achieved 2 billion earned media impressions — a record number for the Prize. In other words, the Prize achieved an impact equivalent to reaching one out of every four people on Earth.

“The Indianapolis Prize has grown in stature and in impact, and we are confident that it will continue to identify, recognize, and reward the conservation champions who are not merely striving but actually succeeding.” Karen Burns, Executive Vice President, Indianapolis Prize

Famed and award-winning actress Sigourney Weaver humbly accepted the Prize’s Jane Alexander Global Wildlife Ambassador Award at the Gala in Indianapolis. Best known for her portrayal of conservationist Dian Fossey in “Gorillas in the Mist,” Weaver says that role transformed how she sees everything.

“Our children and our fellow creatures deserve to live on a peaceful and verdant planet.” Sigourney Weaver, Global Wildlife Ambassador

Weaver noted that it was a privilege to add her voice and support to the world’s real conservation heroes who do so much. Grateful for her opportunity to lend her celebrity status to advancing animal conservation, Weaver said, “If countries and politicians can focus attention on the great apes and their habitats, then there is hope that gorillas, and all of our precious wild friends, will be with us for generations to come.”

The Prize team produced and published an innovative and informative guide connecting readers with the people on the front lines of animal conservation. Champions for our Planet: The Indianapolis Prize Guide to Animal Conservation Giving serves as a roadmap for giving purposeful gifts that foster and sustain endangered species and ecosystems.

Also during the Indianapolis Prize celebration weekend, the Indianapolis community had a rare opportunity for girls interested in a science career to meet and learn from the world’s leading female conservationists saving wildlife worldwide. Participants got to spend time with 2014 Prize Winner Dr. Patricia Wright and 2016 Finalists Dr. P. Dee Boersma and Dr. Amanda Vincent. The young budding scientists learned about saving endangered animals like lemurs, penguins, and seahorses.

Groundbreaking Research The Indianapolis Zoo and the Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center made international headlines when groundbreaking data released through Durham University offered clues into the evolution of human speech. Research conducted with orangutan Rocky revealed a previously unknown level of vocal learning for orangutans and we quickly discovered that the world wanted to know about it.

Rocky can accurately mimic the pitch and tone from a human demonstrator, which is a first for an orangutan. In the study, Rocky mimicked more than 500 vowel-like sounds. This provides new insights as it had been thought that apes were not able to control their voices and make new sounds.

Zoo Director Dr. Rob Shumaker (a co-author on the study) was interviewed by multiple news agencies, including The New York Times, BBC News, Washington Post, CBS News, and much more. International coverage was highly concentrated in the UK but also spread to India, Australia, Austria, and beyond. NBC’s The Tonight Show host, Jimmy Fallon referred to Rocky’s abilities in his monologue on July 28.

“It really redefines for us what we know about the capabilities of orangutans. What we have to consider now is the possibility that the origins of spoken language are not exclusively human and that they may have come from great apes.” Dr. Rob Shumaker Director of the Indianapolis Zoo

Changing Hearts and Minds Living upstream from the wild dolphins that inhabit the Gulf of Mexico, Hoosiers have a lasting impact on the health of the Gulf and the dolphins who live there. Through a partnership with The Nature Conservancy, the Zoo has helped increase public awareness of the courageous people creating change in order to ensure wild dolphins thrive in a healthy environment.

In an effort to connect hearts and minds, the Zoo’s dolphin pod now helps educate the public on the amount of toxins in the Gulf that flow from Indiana. The Zoo launched an all-new dolphin presentation using a contemporary, high-tech video screen and sound system in the dolphin pavilion. Even more remarkable, the new presentation has made a strong impact with the public, creating a powerful connection between dolphins and humans.

Sirih and MilaWith each birth at the Indianapolis Zoo comes a miracle and great cause for celebration. The birth of a rare Sumatran orangutan (pictured below) was the start of an enduring journey for mom and daughter. Baby Mila will stay close to mom Sirih for many years to come. She will also inspire millions of people to find out more about her critically endangered species.

Kim and MaxThe Zoo took action after an emergency outreach request to assist with the declining health of a newborn and his mother. Based on the reputation of the Zoo’s veterinary and keeper staff, management philosophy and state-of-the-art facilities, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums requested that Kim, a 38-year-old orangutan, and her baby, Max, be moved to the Indianapolis Zoo. At 9-months-old, Max showed signs of slow development and Kim was overweight with limited mobility.

Since arriving, due to expert care and nutrition, Kim steadily lost weight and her mobility increased. The veterinarian staff also worked diligently to care for Max, and he responded well with a marked increase in appetite, activity and coordination. Everyone is very pleased with his progress. Health experts from our community partners at Riley Hospital for Children and IU Health also assisted in Max’s diagnosis and care.

MshangaoA dramatic decline in population throughout the last few decades put one of the world’s most iconic animals in the spotlight. Per the International Union for Conservation of Nature

(IUCN), giraffes are now threatened with extinction. Late in 2016, the IUCN adopted a resolution to ease the decline in the species.

The Zoo welcomed a newborn giraffe — an ambassador for his kind in the wild. Mshangao (Ma-SHAN-goe) is much like his dad, Majani, curious and independent. He likes to explore his habitat as long as he can keep an eye on his mom, Takasa.

Jelani and TootsieTwo new kudu calves joined the herd. Jelani and Tootsie were both

born in the summer and like to stay close together.

IvyThe Indianapolis Zoo provided a home for a stranded sea lion who could not be rereleased into the wild. Ivy had been rescued multiple times by SeaWorld Animal Rescue Center in San Diego. She is around 2 years old, very active and is easily identifiable as the smallest sea lion.

INSPIRING CHANGE IN OURSELVES AND OUR COMMUNITY

Page 13: UNDERSTANDING OUR WORLD SHAPING OUR FUTURE€¦ · and our odyssey has taken many remarkable twists and turns as we have grown from a young and fragile Indianapolis nonprofit to a

We are very grateful to the Indianapolis Zoo for much needed support. This year, with generous support from the Indianapolis Zoo, we successfully conducted tiger surveys using camera traps across a 2,000 km2 area in Lazovsky Zapovednik (LZ), Zov Tiger National Park (ZT), and Medved Hunting Lease (MHL) for the 9th, 6th, and 4th years, respectively.

We set camera traps to conduct tiger surveys from January to April 2016: 60 pairs were set in LZ, 26 in ZT, 25 in MHL, and we expanded our surveys with eight additional pairs set in Golden Valley Hunting Lease (GVL). Some camera traps were left in LZ and ZT following the end of the survey period in April to record supplemental information about resident tigers, including site persistence, body condition, and evidence of reproduction (cubs or lactating females).

In 2016 for LZ and ZT combined, we identified 15 adults: nine females and six males and six new litters of cubs, all less

than 1 year of age. Litters of cubs were identified by camera trap photographs of mothers with cubs (rarely), tracks in the snow of family groups (more common), or photographs of lactating females. While the news of cubs is always good, the litter born in ZT is especially significant because the mother “Anna” was born in LZ in 2013 and confirms that LZ is serving its designated purpose as a core breeding area to provide a source of new tigers into outlying areas with available habitat.

Sadly, we were unable to locate one resident female “Dasha” and suspect she was poached. Her territory was overtaken by a new adult female. These results show slightly fewer adult tigers but good reproduction compared to previous years.

Top left Resident female “Anna” with her first litter of two cubs (top right) at a scent-marking tree in ZT. Anna’s mother and grandmother to these cubs is “Lena” (bottom left) whom we have monitored since 2008. Anna was born in LZ and dispersed to reside in ZT. Also daughter of Lena, resident tigress “Leslie” (littermate to Kimberly) was born in LZ and dispersed to ZT in 2015 when she was two years old. In February 2015, she had normal eye shine at night (bottom left), but later lost function in her left eye from an unknow trauma, as evidenced by lack of eye shine (bottom right). Even so, we continued to photograph her in 2016. Tigers can function in the wild with one eye. Resident male “Yasha” is healthy and has survived with no eye shine from his right eye since we first photographed him in 2009. Below Sub-adult male Amur tiger “Roger,” estimated age 20-22 months old, photographed using camera trap in LZ, December 2016.

COMMITTING TO SUPPORT GLOBAL CONSERVATION EFFORTS

We’ve been working on two projects: The first is a social study of attitudes toward macaws and their conservation across the Nicoya Peninsula, Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The project is ongoing, but we hope to wrap it up very soon. We are working with a young dedicated conservationist named Albert who is traveling to other villages in the area and interviewing people in a more informal way in an effort to get correct information. We’re trying to find out which demographics of the local communities are aware of the conservation challenges of macaws and how they feel about these birds. The results from this study will give us important insights that will help us direct our ongoing education, which in turn will help ensure the macaws we reintroduce to the area are safe and respected. It’s an investment but it will allow optimal use of our limited resources in the future. Our second project is also ongoing but progressing every day. We are building a veterinary treatment room so that our 100 captive macaws at the breeding center will get the best veterinary care. We are an eco-conscious organization, and this is a marvelous eco-build. We’ve recycled sidewalk that was being dug up in the next village and used it to make the foundation. On top of that, sits a hand-built rock wall that incorporates rocks from the immediate area, and then the walls are made of cob: a mixture of clay, stones, and straw. Cob is similar to adobe, and the walls are built by hand. So every afternoon, once the macaws are fed and cared for, the entire volunteer team is involved in working the cob mix into the layer added the day before. Slowly but surely the walls are growing. Initially we were set back by lots of rain but the team is making up for lost time, and we hope to have the room done very soon, complete with images of flying macaws sculpted into the outside walls!

COMMITTING TO SUPPORT GLOBAL CONSERVATION EFFORTS

CheetahsIn 2016, Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) made great strides by extending its Future Farmers of Africa livelihood trainings into the rural communal lands adjacent to CCF’s Centre as part of its Greater Waterberg Landscape (GWL) project. The trainings reached the most remote of Namibian farmers with key conservation tools and strategies to help improve their livelihoods and become stewards of the cheetah and their shared environment. CCF also placed more than 50 Livestock Guarding Dogs with Namibian farmers, many in the GWL conservancies, bringing the total to more than 700 since the program began.

CCF rescued eight orphaned cheetah cubs after their mothers were killed late in the

year. The cubs were brought into CCF’s cheetah sanctuary and plans were developed for re-wilding them as adults. Hundreds of young learners from Namibia traveled to CCF’s Field Research and Education Centre to participate in educational programs, and more than 10,000 tourists from around the world visited CCF to learn more about the cheetah and its natural environment. CCF’s Founder and Executive Director Dr. Laurie Marker gave more than 75 presentations promoting awareness for the cheetah and encouraging conservation action on three continents.

With support from the Indianapolis Zoo and other members of the “Gorilla Council,” the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund reports a very successful year protecting gorillas in Africa in 2016. The Fossey Fund’s gorilla trackers and scientists successfully monitored half of the mountain gorilla population in Rwanda, protecting them from threats, such as snares, and continuing the decades-long collection of information about them. Fossey Fund staff also played a major role in carrying out the latest full count — or census — of the mountain gorillas in 2016 and continued to expand their conservation education and health programs for local communities.

Fossey Fund scientists also helped get the nearby Grauer’s gorillas, found only in the Democratic Republic of Congo, listed as “critically endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. A fourth Fossey Fund team was added in Congo to help monitor and protect these gorillas, with a fifth team in development. Fossey Fund staff are providing the only protection for these gorillas outside national park areas and are searching the core of their range to identify remaining Grauer’s groups in need of protection.

In addition, the Fossey Fund began a yearlong celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Karisoke Research Center in Rwanda, which was founded by Dian Fossey in 1967 . This included creating and opening a major new public exhibit on gorilla conservation at the center and expanding scientific expertise.

COMMITTING TO SUPPORT GLOBAL CONSERVATION EFFORTS

The ongoing goal of the Goualougo Triangle Ape Project (GTAP) is to improve the conservation status of African apes by addressing a myriad of threats to their survival and building local capacity to protect these species. Through the Indianapolis Zoo’s support, GTAP focused on identifying high conservation value forests based on apes’ ecological needs, exploring health threats related to human- ape overlap, and advancing the professional development of its Congolese staff. Additional aims included suggesting evidence-based refinements of Reduced Impact Logging practices and providing enhanced surveillance and protection of at-risk ape populations in and around the Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park. Perhaps most notably in 2016, GTAP scientists increased their understanding of the direct and indirect impacts of mechanized logging on gorillas and chimpanzees. With the assistance of Olam International, Ltd., the region’s largest logging company, they found a clear relationship between logging times and locations on great ape distribution. The GTAP team confirmed that logging company data can reliably predict where apes will be, and will now extrapolate these findings from the study zone throughout the area’s logging concessions. This data will be used to inform conservation strategies over a broader regional landscape. Furthermore, GTAP’s evidence of the feasibility of this approach will also be used as leverage to encourage additional timber companies and conservation partners to take a similar approach. As such, this discovery could have a tremendous impact on great ape conservation throughout all of Central Africa.

ElephantsOver the last 10 years and with the Indianapolis Zoo’s assistance, the International Elephant Foundation (IEF) has supported the construction of nine ranger stations — both land and marine stations — in Murchison Falls Conservation Area (MFCA) in Uganda in an attempt to take back the park from poachers. Where ranger stations have been established, wildlife is returning to the area, demonstrating the positive impact armed rangers have on the protection of wildlife. One of the most important reasons to establish these ranger stations, aside from catching ivory poachers and the transport of the ivory to other countries over land and waterways, is the ranger’s ability to find and remove snares and leg hold traps, which are decimating many animal populations, such as lions and antelope, as well as maiming and killing animals, such as giraffe and elephant.

This park maintains the largest population of endangered Rothschild’s giraffe in the world and a large number of these giraffes have leg injuries due to snares. In just one herd of about 40 elephants, there are three females with amputated trunks due to snares; one with almost no trunk at all. Surprisingly this young elephant is in relatively good condition due to the lush habitat and availability of water in MFCA, but her future is dim. The number of snares and traps collected by rangers in just one year can fill a 40’ x 60’ room and new snares are added by poachers to unguarded park lands daily. New ranger stations are constructed of cement and concrete block. The snares and leg hold traps are used in the construction as addition to rebar to help reinforce the concrete. This prevents the snares and traps from ever being used again and solves the problem of how to permanently destroy these horrible devices. In addition to building more ranger stations in 2017, IEF is initiating a project to study and monitor the elephants who leave MFCA and migrate north into public lands. IEF wants to know why and where these elephants are going in order to develop a conservancy approach to their protection modeled after the gold standard of community conservancy programs, Northern Rangelands Trust in Kenya. None of these efforts would be possible without the generous support of organizations like the Indianapolis Zoo. IEF is proud to have the Indianapolis Zoo as a founding member of its board of directors.

The generous support from the Indianapolis Zoo has enabled the Species Survival Commission (SSC) Chair’s Office to provide the means that the SSC network needs in order to deliver the program. Significant progress has been made on: expanding the number of species assessed on the IUCN Red List; enhancing the work of the Amphibian Survival Alliance and the Asian Species Action Partnership; policy development (including on species’ vulnerability to climate change, confiscated animals, recreational fishing, de-extinction, oil palm expansion, trade and use of species threatened with extinction, and use of traditional knowledge in Red List assessments); high-level conservation interventions (for example on turtle dove hunting in Europe, river dolphins in India, an invasive toad in Madagascar, fruit bats in Mauritius, the hooded grebe in Argentina, and crocodiles in Indonesia); developing new conservation standards (most notably the Key Biodiversity Area Standard was finally adopted); addressing the illegal wildlife trade through some major initiatives (especially through engaging local communities in combatting wildlife crime, and advising the CITES Conference of the Parties); and continued enhancement of capacity in red listing worldwide through the increasingly successful deployment of the online training course.

2016 has been another difficult year for orangutans, including those in Kutai National Park. The El Niño that started in 2015 grew into one of the most severe on record and lasted until mid-2016.

For orangutans and their forests, El Niño causes severe, prolonged drought. And droughts are typically accompanied by forest fires. Droughts don’t cause forest fires — people do, often deliberately — but they create forest conditions in which fires are easily started and spread fast and far. Orangutans mainly feed on plants and travel in the trees, so drought and fires, for them, mean vanishing food supplies and brittle travel supports.

Since the drought’s end, our Kutai National Park team has been transplanting seedlings of orangutan food species into the badly drought damaged forest. We transplant only 20-30 seedlings at a time but doing so regularly will eventually lead to large numbers of new trees. We also progressed in finalizing a long-term collaboration with the park authority for orangutan conservation, as well as research; included is a multi-year forest enrichment project funded by the Indianapolis Zoo.

The Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP) has been studying a small population of the critically endangered Sumatran orangutan since 2012 within the Sikundur Orangutan Monitoring Station, which is located in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Despite Sikundur’s tainted past of 30+ years of timber extraction, SOCP sees their study of these shy apes in this degraded habitat as a necessity for the improvement of current and future conservation strategies. SOCP’s work includes monitoring habitat threats, the study of climatological and phenological patterns, and how these aspects impact orangutan density, distribution and behavior. The 2016 field season at the Sikundur Orangutan Monitoring Station was tremendously successful for SOCP. In

addition to a total of 224 full-day orangutan follows, we contacted two new adult female orangutans, one of which has a small dependent infant. This has brought our total of habituated animals to 20, including seven independent females, nine independent males, and five infants/juveniles. One of the key findings from Sikundur is that Sumatran orangutans are able to cope with low levels of preferred fruit availability by switching to a lower quality diet of leaves, bark, and piths/stems. This is extremely important, as it suggests that the large expanse of degraded regenerating habitats in Sumatra can be key habitat areas for Sumatra’s orangutans, provided that they are not degraded further. In addition to our key focuses, the SOCP hosted two international (Master’s and Ph.D.

As part of an ongoing commitment to saving species, the Indianapolis Zoo became a Visionary Founder of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums SAFE program. SAFE stands for Saving Animals From Extinction and combines the efforts of zoos and aquariums across the country to support and spread the word about animal conservation.

SAFE combines the power of zoo and aquarium visitors with the resources and

collective expertise of AZA members and partners — all focused on saving species. Our collective action will help save vulnerable wildlife species from extinction and protect them for future generations.

Degree) and one Indonesian student researcher (Bachelor’s Degree) at the Sikundur Orangutan Monitoring Station, so that they could complete data collection necessary for their theses. The topics included the importance of lianas in orangutan diet, the density and distribution of gibbons and siamangs, and the importance of microclimate on local primate populations. The work over the past year resulted in four presentations at last year’s International Primatological Society Congress, which was held in Chicago, IL. Lastly, SOCP unfortunately detected a number of forest disturbance sites within proximity to the Sikundur Orangutan Monitoring Station. As a proactive measure, the SOCP initiated

a conservation education program within the area and at the end of 2016 has already visited a total of 12 villages in the priority area. During each visit, SOCP staff met with villagers and discussed the importance of their local forested lands, both degraded and not, also trying to establish greater local collaborations, a key component to the survival of the Sumatran orangutan and their unique rainforest habitat. Thus, SOCP’s work at Sikundur is transforming our understanding of Sumatran orangutans and highlighting new pathways to their conservation.

The Tarangire elephant population has been lucky to escape the ivory poaching that has drastically affected other parts of Tanzania. Much of this protection can be credited to the dedicated and effective law enforcement of the national parks authority and the community anti-poaching teams outside the national parks. Our Village Game Scouts continue to monitor and patrol the community areas outside Tarangire National Park, and this year they were trained in “SMART” technology — a leading software tool to help with law enforcement monitoring. With our local partners, we have helped conserve an additional 96,000 acres of critical wildlife corridors in the Tarangire ecosystem using a Certificate of Customary Right of Occupancy (CCRO), which is proving an effective model for protecting communal lands for wildlife and livestock.

Our work in southern Tanzania is focused on protecting a land corridor linking Ruaha National Park with Katavi National Park. Our Ph.D. student, Alex Lobora, has spent several years researching wildlife movements and land use patterns in the area and has identified a corridor of land that, if protected, would likely be the larger elephant corridor in Africa. The Indianapolis Zoo was a critical supporter of this work by providing a generous grant from the Super Bowl funds (2012), which allowed us to put radio collars on elephants to track their movements and determine location and frequency of use in the corridor. An additional grant from the Zoo in 2016 assisted us to remove the radio collars and host a series of meetings with local communities and government officials to discuss how best to protect the corridor for elephants.

With millions of parrots taken from the wild annually for the caged bird trade, and logging of primary forest habitat increasing rapidly, parrots are among the most threatened groups of birds in the world. The blue-throated Macaw, pictured above, is one of the most critically endangered. An estimated 125–200 birds remain today, scattered widely in fragments of gallery forest in central Bolivia. Despite protection from international trade, the species is barely hanging on.

The Indianapolis Zoo is helping save this species by investing with the World Parrot Trust in a blue-throated Macaw rehabilitation and breeding facility in Bolivia. This facility will be releasing young birds into the wild to bolster natural populations. Those efforts are paired with restoration of critical forest habitat, protection of nests and young in the wild, and education of local communities to promote awareness and protection from trapping.

It is the long-term vision and dedication of the Indianapolis Zoo, working with others, that will give future generations the chance to see, and enjoy, spectacular birds like the blue-throated Macaw in the wild.

A message from the Chairman of the BoardWe inspire, we build community, we celebrate success, and we contribute to global conservation efforts because we know that strengthening our future is not an option, it’s a must. If we want to see giraffes thriving in the wild instead of declining in population, we need to be at the forefront of animal conservation. If we want our grandchildren to live in a world with elephants, orangutans, dolphins, and rhinos, we need to cultivate a love of wild things and wild places. The Indianapolis Zoo’s mission leads to a true connection to nature — a connection that needs to be transferred from one generation to the next. I have been bringing my family to the Zoo for many years and have witnessed true commitment from the staff, volunteers, and generous donors. They are a big reason why I was honored and eager to become the Chairman of the Board. Wildlife conservation done the right way can be accepted and embraced by all. While the future is difficult to know, we do have the confidence that we can make it better than it is today. Mike Bosway2015–2016 Chairman of the Board of Trustees
