What’s important in 2019?
• Be mindful that the Secondary 3 curriculum
will be challenging for the students
• Students need to dedicate time and effort to
their studies
• Students need to balance curricular
demands with co-curricular demands
• Students need good study habits, proper diet
and proper sleep
• Students also need to manage their
emotional well-being
Heart. Passion. Will
How can parents help?
• Know their timetable
• Watch out for signs of stress
• Monitor their activities after school and
during weekends
• Ensure that the home environment is
conducive for them to study and share their
concerns
• Encourage and affirm effort (article on “Why
certain types of praise can backfire”).
Heart. Passion. Will
Developing a growth mindset
in students• When talking about intelligent, the manner in
which parents offer feedback is critical.
• Feedback should gear students towards futureimprovements and not focus on pastshortcomings. This helps students understandthat every obstacle can be overcome witheffort or the right strategy.
• When cultivating interests, do not maintainclear and strict delineation between subjectsbut keep the options open.
• Parents also need to go beyond endorsing agrowth mindset to living by example.
