UNDERSTANDING DENTAL
SPECIALTIESBy Ferber Dental Group
Understanding Dental Specialties
The American Dental Association officially recognizes nine dental specialties, which require dentists to obtain significant post-graduate training. Many patients will eventually need the services of two types of specialists in particular - endodontists and periodontists.
Understanding Dental Specialties
Endodontists diagnose and treat conditions and diseases of the inner tooth, which includes the pulp and the tissues surrounding the root. They most commonly perform root canals, which remove decayed or infected pulp and nerve, as well as surgical procedures, such as root-end resection, extraction and reimplantation, and exploratory surgery.

Periodontists diagnose and treat diseases that affect the periodontium, which are the specialized tissues that support the teeth. This set of diseases is collectively known as periodontitis or gum disease. Periodontists provide a variety of treatments, including scaling and root planing, which cleans the infected surface of a root, and root surface debridement, which removes damaged tissue. They also perform a number of reconstructive procedures, such as soft tissue and bone grafting, soft tissue recontouring or removal, and hard tissue recontouring. In addition, periodontists are trained to place and maintain dental implants.
