Health experts say that attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is commonly a behavioral disorder that starts during childhood. However, it does not only affect children - people of all ages can suffer from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Psychiatrists say attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a neurobehavioral developmental disorder.

My motivation for starting Focus Here and Now was to help others who also struggle with

ADHD, as I have during the course of my entire life. ADHD usually starts at a young age

but eventually children with ADHD become adults with ADHD and ADHD in adults can

present a whole other level of challenges.

An individual with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) finds it much more difficult to focus on something without being distracted. They typically have a greater difficulty in controlling what they may be doing or saying and less able to control how much physical activity is appropriate for a particular situation compared to somebody without ADHD. In other words, a person with ADHD is much more impulsive and restless.

Health care professionals may use any of the following terms when describing a child (or an adult) who is overactive and has difficulty concentrating - ADD, ADHD, attention deficit, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, hyperkinetic disorder, hyperactivity.

North Americans commonly use the terms ADD (attention deficit disorder) or ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). In the UK hyperkinetic disorder is the official term - however, ADD and ADHD have become widely used.

ADHD in children is completely different from normal childhood excited and boisterous behavior. Many children, especially very young ones, are inattentive and restless without necessarily being affected by attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Parenting ADHD children can be very difficult. Fortunately, there are more options

available to parents of ADHD children than their used to be. There are now resources, coaching programs, strategies, and tools beyond typical ADHD prescription medications available to parents struggling with their ADHD child.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that approximately 4.4 million children aged 4 to 17 have been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in the USA by a healthcare professional. As of 2003, two and a half million American children aged 4 to 17 are being treated for ADHD with prescription medications. The CDC adds that in 2003 7.8% of all school-aged American children were reported to have an attention deficit hyperactivity disorder diagnosis by their parent. However, prescription medications are not the only way to treat a child or adult with ADHD.

Here’s the deal:

Sometimes ADHD can also be associated with other mental health disorders and/or symptoms. It is more common than you may think for a child or adult struggling with ADHD to also go through other intense emotions and anger. Be sure to read this article about the Intense Emotions and Anger that Can Be Associated with ADHD Symptoms.

What Causes ADHD?

Unfortunately, we do not have as direct of an answer to what causes ADHD as we would like to have. There are many potential causes of ADD or ADHD. It is important to understand the definition of ADHD and the symptoms associated with ADHD in order to get to the bottom of a potential cause for the disorder. Understanding ADHD will get us closer to understanding it’s cause.

Three Types of ADHD

According to the CDC, there are three types of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). They are defined according to which symptoms stand out the most.

Predominantly Inattentive Type

The person with ADHD finds it very difficult to organize or finish a task. They find it hard to pay attention to details and find it difficult to follow instructions or conversations.

Focus Here and Now

Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Type

The person finds it hard to keep still - they fidget and talk a lot. A smaller child may be continually jumping, running or climbing. They are restless and impulsive - interrupting others, grabbing things and speaking at inappropriate times. They have difficulty waiting their turn and find it hard to listen to directions. A person with this type of ADHD will have more injuries and/or accidents than others.

Combined Type

A person whose symptoms include all those of 1 and 2, and whose symptoms are equally predominant. In other words, all the symptoms in 1 and 2 stand out equally.

What are the general signs of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children?

▪ The child is restless, overactive, fidgety

▪ The child is constantly chattering

▪ The child is continuously interrupting people

▪ The child cannot concentrate for long on specific tasks

▪ The child is inattentive

▪ The child finds it hard to wait his/her turn in play, conversations or standing in line (queue)

The above signs may be observed in children frequently and usually do not mean the child necessarily has ADHD. It is when these signs become significantly more pronounced in one child, compared to other children of the same age, and when his/her behavior undermines his/her school and social life, that the child may have ADHD.

Symptoms of adults with ADHD have some similarities but also can differ in some ways, as well. Adult ADHD symptoms can be quite the rollercoaster on their own.

So, What causes attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)?

We are not sure. Studies reveal that a person's risk of developing attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is higher if a close relative also has/had it. Twin studies have indicated that ADHD is highly heritable. We also know that ADHD is much more common in boys than girls. The scientific community generally agrees that ADHD is biological in nature. Many reputable scientists believe ADHD is the result of chemical imbalances in the brain.

Some studies have indicated that food additives, specifically some colorings, may have an impact on ADHD behaviors. This is why many put so much stress on the “ADHD diet “and daily use of certain brain foods.

In July 2008, the European Union ruled that synthetic food colorings (called azo dyes) must be labeled not only with the relevant E number, but also with the words "may have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children".

A 1984 study by Benton and team, demonstrated that sugar has no effect on behavior. A study in 1986 by Milich and Pelham, and another by Wolraich and team in 1985 also found no link between sucrose (sugar) and behavior impact on children with ADHD. However, most sugars found in sugary foods and sweets (candy) consumed by children are corn syrup and high fructose corn syrup - these sugars were not used in any of the above-mentioned studies.

Mercury during pregnancy and ADHD risk  - according to a study published in Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, mercury exposure during pregnancy may be associated with a higher risk of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder -related behaviors in offspring.

The authors added that even slight exposure raises the risk of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Fish consumption during pregnancy seems to lower the risk. Several types of fish have low or no levels of mercury. Women should focus on those types of fish when they are pregnant.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder cannot be diagnosed physically, i.e. with a blood test, urine test, brain scan or a physical check up. As most children have problems with self-control anyway, a proper diagnosis can be quite challenging.

An attention deficit hyperactivity disorder diagnosis has to be carried out by a specialist - usually a psychiatrist, psychologist or pediatrician. The specialist will observe the child and recognize behavior patterns. Data regarding the child's behavior at home and at school will also be studied. Only a specialist will be able to accurately detect whether other problems and/or conditions are resulting in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder -like behavioral characteristics.

Diagnosing ADHD with EEG (electroencephalogram)  - in July 2013, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved  the NEBA System  (Neuropsychiatric  EEG-Based  Assessment Aid) to help doctors more accurately diagnose attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children. Christy Foreman, who works at the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health, said “(the NEBA System) along with other clinical information, may help healthcare providers more accurately determine whether attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is the cause of a behavioral problem."Interesting links

When does attention deficit hyperactivity disorder start? How long does ADHD last?

According to  New Zealand's attention deficit hyperactivity disorder Online Support Group, the onset of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder usually occurs before the person is 7 years old. For about 75% of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder sufferers, symptoms continue into adulthood. However, levels of hyperactivity tend to decrease as the person gets older.

Adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

It was not until the 1970s that researchers began to realize that what we today know as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder did not always go away during a person's teen years. It was during that decade that it was also noticed that some attention deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms were identified in the parents of children undergoing attention deficit hyperactivity disorder treatment. In 1978 attention deficit hyperactivity disorder was formally recognized as a condition that also afflicts adults, and the term Adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder began - the 'H' of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder was dropped because it seemed the adults were not as hyperactive as children.

According to  uspharmacist.com, approximately 8 million adults in the USA have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. An adult with attention deficit hyperactivity

disorder who is untreated will tend to have a chaotic lifestyle - they may seem more disorganized compared to people who are not afflicted with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Healthcare professionals believe there are millions of adults who have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder but do not know and remain untreated. Studies indicate that adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder benefit enormously from a combination of medication and behavior therapy.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a common condition that affects children and adolescents and can continue into adulthood for some.

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) estimates that 3% to 5% of children have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Some experts, though, say attention deficit hyperactivity disorder may occur in 8% to 10% of school-aged children. Some experts also question whether kids really outgrow attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. What that means is that this disorder may be more common in adults than previously thought.

Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder generally have problems paying attention or concentrating. They can't seem to follow directions and are easily bored or frustrated with tasks. They also tend to move constantly and are impulsive, not stopping to think before they act. These behaviors can be normal in children. But they occur more often than usual and are more severe in a child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

The behaviors that are common with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder interfere with a child's ability to function at school and at home.

What are attention deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms in children?

Symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children are generally grouped into three categories: inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness.

Inattention - A child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder:

• Is easily distracted• Does not follow directions or finish tasks• Does not appear to be listening when someone is speaking• Does not pay attention and makes careless mistakes• Is forgetful about daily activities• Has problems organizing daily tasks• Avoids or dislikes activities that require sitting still or a sustained effort• Often loses things, including personal items• Has a tendency to daydream

Hyperactivity - A child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder:

• Often squirms, fidgets, or bounces when sitting• Does not stay seated as expected• Has difficulty playing quietly• Is always moving, such as running or climbing on things (In teens and adults, this is

more commonly described as a sense of restlessness)• Talks excessively

Impulsivity - A child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder:

• Has difficulty waiting for his or her turn• Blurts out answers before the question has been completed• Often interrupts others

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Treatment

Treatment of  attention deficit hyperactivity disorder helps control the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms, including inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Consistent attention deficit hyperactivity disorder treatment can improve the ability of the person with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder to function better in school, at work, and in social situations.

Treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is multifaceted. It consists of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder  medications, supplementation, or behavioral

modification therapy or both. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder treatment should be tailored to meet the unique needs of the child or adult who has attention deficit

hyperactivity disorder as well as the needs of the family. There are also some natural

ADHD treatments that can help children, teens, and adults.

What kind of treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is recommended for children and adolescents?

Studies have established the safety and effectiveness of using stimulant medications, supplements, brain foods, other drugs,  and behavioral therapy. These treatments do more than simply relieve the symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. They also improve the child's ability to follow rules and to improve relationships with peers and parents.

There are two treatment strategies that have been shown to be effective for elementary-school-aged  children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The first is a closely monitored medication treatment program. The second is a program that combines medication with intensive behavior therapy. In a large study, nine out of 10 children improved substantially with one of these two treatment strategies.

The most effective approach to treatment for children and adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a multidisciplinary approach. This approach includes multiple elements that work best together and support each other. The components of a multidisciplinary approach to treating attention deficit hyperactivity disorder include:

• Education for both parents and child or teen about diagnosis and treatment• attention deficit hyperactivity disorder medication• Behavior management therapy• School teacher involvement• School counselor involvement

Which medications are used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children?

The primary attention deficit hyperactivity disorder medications include stimulants, non-stimulants, and anti-depressants. They can also include natural supplementation.

Stimulants are the most common treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children and adolescents. They include methylphenidate  - Adderall, Ritalin, Metadate, Concer ta , Qui l l i vant XR, and Dayt rana or  amphetamines, inc lud ing

Dexedrine,  Dextrostat, and  Adderall. A newer drug,  Vyvanse, is a type of amphetamine  that’s formulated to last longer and to be less conducive to abuse or dependence than other stimulants.

Other FDA-approved drugs for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children and adolescents include the non-stimulants Strattera and  Intuniv. Strattera works on levels of the brain chemical nor-epinephrine and is quite effective at  treating and controlling attention deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms. Intuniv affects certain receptors in the brain and also improves concentration and impulse control. Both of these drugs pose a much lower risk of abuse or dependence than stimulants.

Nootropics, also known as smart drugs, are cognitive enhancers. They can boost memory and help to increase focus and attention. Memory begins to decline as early as the late teens. There are other factors also that can make memory decline faster. Stress, alcohol and lack of sleep are a few examples.

When a person learns, they require two cognitive skills, memory and concentration. Memory is the ability to remember and contraction is the power to hold your attention. When you are having problems with learning due to lack of memory and concentration, nootropics might be a good idea. Nootropics consist mostly of medications, supplements or functional foods. Here is a list of the 10 best nootropic brain supplements

we have discovered.

Several nootropics act as a vasodilator. Vasodilators are medications or other elements that will open up the blood vessels. This can improve the flow of oxygen to the brain. An insufficient supply of oxygen to the brain is the beginning of the problem of concentration lapse. Many adults are finding that the use of nootropics can help alleviate some of their ADHD symptoms.

A drug can only be classified as a nootropic if it improves overall health and mind over a long period of time. There are other meditations which provide short term mental benefits. Amphetamines are an example of this and are not technically considered a nootropic.

There are many different nootropic drugs out there and they all work in different ways.

Most people taking nootropics notice improvement in memory, mood, ability to concentrate, motivation and reaction time. How much of a difference is dependent on the person and the supplement they are taking. Most people do benefit from taking nootropics, even if it is subtle.

It is important to understand that taking these “smart drugs” will not turn you into a genius overnight. You are not all of a sudden being able to speak another language or master advanced calculus. If you stick to your regimen, you will notice a change.

Many people often ask the question “how do nootropics work”. Simply put, they affect

neurotransmitter levels in the brain. Many of the neurotransmitters act as your brain’s way of communication with itself. If your brain is communicating with itself better, brain functions improve.

When deciding how you should take nootropics, it is important to understand that if you take too much, they could have the opposite effect. If you take too little, you could have no effect at all. When taking these smart drugs, it is important to start with just one type at a time. If you start with more than one, and have a great effect, you won’t know which drug is working so well. Also, if you have side effects, you won’t know which pill is doing it. Also, you should start with a low dosage and work your way up. You will notice the change in yourself but it also a good idea to ask family and friends to pay attention to you and report any changes that they notice as well. It is also a good idea to do as much research on nootropics as possible.

Nootropics are broadly any type of neuro-enhancing drug with very low prevalence of side effects. The actual definition of what makes a supplement a nootropic is somewhat of a loose concept. The best description comes from Belgian pharmacologists S. Giurgea and V. Skondia who invented the first Nootropic –  a compound known as Piracetam  – in 1963. They established the classification of Nootropics to refer to cognitive boosting substances with extremely low toxicity that can be taken for long-term use. This highlights the fact that Piracetam and other Nootropics are able to improve brain functions without any of the negative side effects associated with brain stimulants.Piracetam (known also by the name Nootropil) is one of the best known Nootropics and makes up part of the Racetam family along with Aniracetam, Noopept, Pramiracetam

and Oxiracetam. These are all synthetic compounds that have been created in lab environments, but there are also a large number of herbal and natural nootropic supplements. For example, fish oil, grape seed extract, bacopa monnieri, yerba mate and even licorice are all natural nootropics. (Click here to see a  full Nootropics List of supplements  that are available.) You will often find these supplements combined together in a Nootropic Stack to further enhance their effectiveness.

How Do Nootropics Work? What exactly do Nootropics do? Like most “smart drugs”, Nootropics will not instantaneously give you a higher IQ or a better intellect. But they will boost your brain functions  by increasing the production of various neurotransmitters. Your brain is essentially a network of neurons connected by synapses. These neurons communicate

and work together through chemicals known as neurotransmitters. When you have a higher presence of neurotransmitters, you experience improved concentration, better memory, mood elevation, increased processing ability for mental work, and longer attention spans. With continued supplementation of nootropics, you can actually alter the permanent level of these neurotransmitters in the brain thereby causing long lasting improvement to the health of your brain.

Other Nootropics show effects of vasodilation which means they increase the blood flow to your brain. This supplies your brain with more oxygen, nutrients, and glucose – the primary energy source used by the brain during long periods of focus. By raising bloodflow and oxygenation, you will immediately experience  greater capacity for memory and focus. This type of nootropic is especially favored among students for studying as their effects are felt immediately.

Nootropics can also show signs of neuro-preservation and neuro-protection. These compounds directly affect the levels of neurotransmitters associated with slowing down the aging process. Some nootropics will result in an increase in the production of brain cells while slowing down their destruction as well. Over time, this can significantly slow down signs of aging like loss of memory and even counter the development of disorders like Alzheimer’s disease.

What are the Best Nootropics?

If you’ve done any amount of research into nootropics, you probably already know that there are countless nootropics out there. Each nootropic has its own special properties and each supports the brain in a different way. For example, vinpocetine is a nootropic that increases blood flow to the brain, helping improve mental quickness and focus. Pyritinol, on the other hand, is a nootropic that delivers antioxidants to the brain to help protect it against harmful compounds.

With so many different nootropics available, figuring out which ones you should be taking can be a bit confusing. You want to make sure your nootropic stack is delivering the ideal combination of smart drugs so that you get the best overall results for boosting your brain power.

- AddieUp - If you are looking for a supplement that claims to be a “natural” alternative

to Adderall, you may want to look somewhere else. AddieUp was loaded with stimulants that made it more like an energy pill than a nootropic supplement to

improve cognitive functioning. Check out the AddieUp review to find out why this

one didn’t quite make the grade and is a supplement we would recommend avoiding.

- Katy Love Nootropic Party Drug - Katy was a completely different kind of nootropic

- With that in mind, let’s take a look at what are nootropics and what are

some of the best individual nootropic drugs and their benefits.

Pterostilbene:  This powerful berry compound is quickly becoming one of the most popular nootropics out there today. It’s a natural antioxidant that fights free radicals, helping prevent brain fog and improve cognitive function.

L-Tyrosine: This amino acid plays a role in the synthesis of dopamine, an essential neurotransmitter that improves memory, increases physical abilities and performance in stressed situations, and elevates mood and wellbeing.

Huperzine A: Extracted from Chinese club moss plant, this is one of the most effective nootropics for increasing memory. The way Huperzine-A works is by preventing or slowing the breakdown of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter involved in brain processing and memory.

L-Theanine: This non-protein amino acid is easily absorbed into the body, and it has

been associated with stress reduction, enhanced concentration, and mental stamina.

Alpha-GPC: This easily absorbed nootropic crosses the blood brain barrier to deliver

acetylcholine, known for improving memory, sharpness, and REM sleep states.

Phosphatidylserine: This nutrient is naturally produced by the brain to reverse age-related mental decline. It has been shown to improve memory and concentration without any serious negative side effects by helping neurotransmitters communicate more effectively and reducing stress.

Vitamin B6: This highly active vitamin is involved in over 100 chemical reactions in your body. As it relates to brain power, Vitamin B6 plays an essential role in the production of neurotransmitters and amino acids.

Vinpocetine: Derived from periwinkle plant, this compound improves brain function by enhancing blood flow to the brain and improving oxygen utilization. By feeding your brain oxygen, vinpocetine helps your mind work faster and it aids in increasing focus and clarity. Vinpocetine is also commonly found in many of the pre-formulated nootropic supplements mentioned above.

Pyritinol: Protecting your brain against free radicals and other harmful compounds is important to preserving proper cognitive function. Pyritinol is an excellent antioxidant that strengthens your brain’s defenses and promotes glucose uptake for better overall mental performance.

Piracetam:  Studies dating back over 40 years have linked piracetam to enhanced

memory and effective treatment against age-related mental decline. Piracetam has also been shown to improve performance on mental tasks among dyslexic children. It’s also one of the first ever memory boosting pills to be marketed.

There's no denying that as we age chronologically, our body ages right along with us. But research is showing that you can increase your chances of maintaining a healthy brain well into your old age if you add these "smart" or “brain” foods to your daily eating regimen.

Check out our article on the best brain foods and the ADHD diet. We even discuss some of the unconventional brain foods that are good for you to consume.

The following list contains some of the best brain foods you need to start working into your daily regimen:

Blueberries

Brainberries is what Steven Pratt, MD, author of  Superfoods Rx: Fourteen Foods Proven to Change Your Life, calls these tasty fruits. Pratt, who is also on staff at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, Calif., says that in animal studies researchers have found that blueberries help protect the brain from oxidative stress and may reduce the effects of age-related conditions such as Alzheimer's disease or dementia. Studies have also shown that diets rich in blueberries significantly improved both the learning capacity and motor skills of-aging rats, making them mentally equivalent to much younger rats.

Wild salmon

Deep-water fish, such as salmon, are rich in omega-3 essential fatty acids, which are essential for brain function, says Kulze. Both she and Pratt recommend wild salmon for its "cleanliness" and the fact that it is in plentiful supply. Omega-3s also contain anti-inflammatory substances. You can also use a high-quality Omega-3 supplement into your daily routine. I recommend Dr. Tobias Omega-3 supplement.

Nuts and seeds. Nuts and seeds are good sources of vitamin E, says Pratt, explaining that higher levels of vitamin E correspond with less cognitive decline as you get older. Add an ounce a day of walnuts, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, filberts, almonds, cashews, peanuts, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, flax seed, and un-hydrogenated nut butters such as peanut butter, almond butter, and tahini. Raw or roasted doesn't matter, although if you're on a sodium-restricted diet, buy unsalted nuts.

Avocados

Avocados are almost as good as blueberries in promoting brain health, says Pratt. "I don't think the avocado gets its due," agrees Kulze. True, the avocado is a fatty fruit, but, says Kulze, it's a monounsaturated fat, which contributes to healthy blood flow. "And healthy blood flow means a healthy brain," she says. Avocados also lower blood pressure, says Pratt, and as hypertension  is a risk factor for the decline in cognitive abilities, a lower blood pressure should promote brain health. Avocados are high in

calories, however, so Kulze suggests adding just 1/4 to 1/2 of an avocado to one daily meal as a side dish.

Whole grains

Whole grains, such as oatmeal, whole-grain breads, and brown rice can reduce the risk for heart disease. "Every organ in the body is dependent on blood flow," says Pratt. "If you promote cardiovascular health, you're promoting good flow to the organ system, which includes the brain." While wheat germ is not technically a whole grain, it also goes on Kulze's "super-foods" list because in addition to fiber, it has vitamin E and some omega-3s. Kulze suggests 1/2 cup of whole-grain cereal, 1 slice of bread two-three times day, or 2 tablespoons of wheat germ a day.

Beans

Beans are "under-recognized" and "economical," says Kulze. They also stabilize glucose (blood sugar) levels. The brain is dependent on glucose for fuel, Kulze explains, and since it can't store the glucose, it relies on a steady stream of energy which beans can provide. Any beans will do, says Kulze, but she is especially partial to lentils and black beans and recommends 1/2 cup every day.

Pomegranate juice

Pomegranate juice (you can eat the fruit itself but with its many tiny seeds, it's not nearly as convenient) offers potent antioxidant benefits, says Kulze, which protect the brain from the damage of free radicals. "Probably no part of the body is more sensitive to the damage from free radicals as the brain," says board-certified neurologist David Perlmutter, MD, author of The Better Brain Book. Citrus fruits and colorful vegetables are also high on Perlmutter's list of "brainy" foods because of their antioxidant properties -- "the more colorful the better," he says. Because pomegranate juice has added sugar (to counteract its natural tartness), you don't want to go overboard, says Kulze; she recommends approximately 2 ounces a day, diluted with spring water or seltzer.

Freshly brewed tea

Two to three cups a day of freshly brewed tea hot or iced contains a modest amount of caffeine which, when used "judiciously," can boost brain power by enhancing memory, focus, and mood. Tea also has potent antioxidants, especially the class known as catechines, which promotes healthy blood flow. Bottled or powdered teas don't do the trick, however, says Kulze. "It has to be freshly brewed." Tea bags do count, however.

Dark chocolate

Let's end with the good stuff. Dark chocolate has powerful antioxidant properties, contains several natural stimulants, including caffeine, which enhance focus and concentration, and stimulates the production of endorphins, which helps improve mood.

One-half ounce to 1 ounce a day will provide all the benefits you need, says Kulze. This is one "super-food" where more is not better. "You have to do this one in moderation," says Kulze.

How does the above food affect our brain?

Almost everything you choose to consume will directly or indirectly affect your brain. Obviously, some things we consume affect us more than others. I'm going to assume that spices, plants, animal parts, drugs of any kind, coffee, tea, nicotine and chocolate are all just food and define food as anything we take into our bodies whether it's nutritious or not. In order to better understand how foods affect the brain it will be helpful to divide them into three categories.

First, those foods we consume in high doses with acute dosing: for example, coffee, sugar, heroin, alcohol, nicotine, marijuana, some spices and a few psychoactive plants and mushrooms. Their effects are almost immediate and depend upon how much reaches the brain. In this class, the most important consideration is getting enough of the chemical from within the food to its site of action in our brain to actually produce some kind of effect that we can notice and associate with consuming that particular food. Most of the time, this simply does not happen. For example, consider nutmeg: low doses will be on pies next month and most of us will not notice that it contains two chemicals that our bodies convert into the popular street drug  Ecstasy. Yet, if we consumed the entire canister of the spice our guts will notice (with a terrible diarrhea) and there is a good chance that we will hallucinate for about 48 hours! According to my students, the experience is quite unpleasant.

Secondly are those foods that affect our brain slowly over a period of a few days to weeks. This is usually called "precursor-loading" and would include many different amino acids (tryptophan and lysine are good examples), carbohydrates that have a high glycemic index such as potatoes, bagels and rice, fava beans, some minerals (iron and magnesium in particular), lecithin-containing products such as donuts, eggs and cakes, chocolate and the water-soluble vitamins. Their purpose is to  bias  the function of a specific transmitter system; usually to enhance its function in the brain. For example, scientists once thought that drinking a glass of warm milk before bed or eating a large meal of protein made us drowsy because of tryptophan loading - the current evidence does not support this but the claim makes my major point: we must get enough of any particular nutrient/chemical to the right place and at the right dose in our brain in order for us to notice any effects. Unfortunately, tryptophan has difficulty getting across the blood-brain barrier into our brain.

So, what's the scientific evidence for considering the cognitive effects of these foods?

Mostly, it's related to what happens when we do not get enough of them. For example, studies have shown that consuming too little tryptophan makes us depressed and angry and has been blamed for multiple wars and acts of cannibalism. Too little sugar or water-soluble vitamins (the B's and C) will induce changes in brain function that we will notice after a few days of deprivation. Many authors jump to the conclusion that giving high doses of such nutrients will rapidly improve our mood or thinking: sadly, this is

rarely the case. Ordinarily the foods in this category require far more time to affect our brains than do those foods in the first category.

The third category includes the slow acting, life-time dosing nutrients that have been popular topics in the press recently. This category includes the anti-oxidant rich foods such as colorful fruits and vegetables, fish and olive oils, fruit juices, anti-inflammatory plants and drugs such as aspirin, some steroids, cinnamon and some other spices, nicotine, caffeine and chocolate, the fat-soluble vitamins, nuts, legumes, beer and red wine. People who eat these foods do not report acute changes in their thoughts or moods (depending upon how much they consume!) but certainly benefit from consuming them regularly over their life span. In general, the benefit comes from the fact that all of these foods provide our brains with some form of protection against the most deadly thing we expose ourselves to every day - Oxygen. Because we consume food, we must consume oxygen. Because we consume oxygen, we age. Thus, people who live the longest tend to each food rich in anti-oxidants or simply eat a lot less food. Recent studies suggest that nicotine and caffeine may prevent the toxic actions of oxygen in our brain which is why I've included them here.

You can see that depending upon how you frame the question about foods and the brain you get a different list of foods and a different reason for consuming them. If you wish to alter your current brain function or slow your brain's aging you need to consume foods that target specific chemical processes. In truth, no one ever considers these distinctions when eating - we just eat what tastes good. Sadly, our brains powerfully reward us when we eat sugar, fat and salt; thus  there is  an oncoming epidemic of

obesity-related illnesses. Food has both negative and positive effects and it all depends upon what you consume, how much you consume and for how long.

In Conclusion

There are many different things that affect our brains as children, teens, and adults. However, we are discovering more things that we can do about it to both enhance our cognitive functioning and decrease our cognitive decline.
