Content Development

Approximately 5 days should be spent on students representing numbers flexibly in more than one way to deepen their understanding of place value and the relationships between the places in the base-ten system.

In the base-ten system, each place to the left is 10 times greater than the place to its right.

Instruction should focus on helping students to choose the most efficient representation of a number to solve a given problem.

different ways. Examples:

Day 4 The focus of Day 4 is for students to find patterns to solve real

world text problems.

The students extend their understanding of place value to 5- and 6-digit numbers.

If students have a difficulty reading 6-digit numbers, have them put a sheet of paper to the right of the comma. Read the number like ay other 3-digit number and say thousand at the comma. Then read the rest of the number.

Students should not be using the word “and” when reading a whole number. “And” is used when reading fractions and decimals.
