Since Moorgate, as an i n t e r i m measure, te r m i n a l s t a t i o n ends have been protected by:- l ) ensuring t h a t a t r a i n t r a v e l l i n g i n t o a t e r m i n a l dead-end platform stops at the l a s t (or next to l a s t ) s i g n a l before proceeding i n t o the platforr:i„ 2 ) the i n s t a l l a t i o n of 10 raop.h, speed r e s t r i c t i o n signs at the approach to the platform ( s ) concerned. 3 ) I n a d d i t i o n to the f i x e d red l i g h t t h a t has always been i n p o s i t i o n , two fvirther red l i g h t s and a f i x e d t r a i n s t o p i n the upright p o s i t i o n have been i n s t a l l e d , where p o s s i b l e (space permitting) these have been lo c a t e d as f a r away from the stops as p o s s i b l e , to give a maximum safe over run» Some s i d i n g s liave a l s o been t r e a t e d s i m i l a r l y .

The i n t e r i m measures (so f a r c o s t i n g £ 3 0 0 , 0 0 0 ) a f t e r Moorgate causes delay to the t r a i n s e r v i c e , i n that a l l t r a i n s have to stop at the l a s t (or next to l a s t ) s i g n a l f o r k or 15 seconds (according to the l o c a t i o n ) and then enter the s t a t i o n at a reduced speed.

Included i n the £ 1 m i l l i o n to be spent, are f i v e f e a t u r e s which, a t the s e l e c t e d s i t e s , w i l l allow the f a s t e s t run i n t o a dead end t e r m i n a l s t a t i o n i n complete s a f e t y . A l l s t a t i o n s quoted are served by tube s i z e t r a i n s only. At other t e r m i n a l platforms served only by tube t r a i n s , adequate over run f a c i l i t i e s e x i s t , thus making these s t a t i o n s exempt from the scheme (Queens Park, Elephant & C a s t l e , Morden, Epping, K a i n a u l t , Heathrow C e n t r a l , B r i x t o n and Walthamstow),

For s u r f a c e stock t r a i n s e n t e r i n g dead end t e r m i n a l s t a t i o n s , s i m i l a r measures (estimated cost £2 m i l l i o n ) are being planned, but f u r t h e r t e s t s w i l l have to be made before the f i n a l plans are made. I t i s now a w e l l known f a c t -tfliat the Glasgovr Subway suddenly c l o s e d on 2 l s t May 1 9 7 7 , a week e a r l i e r than planned. By 2 9 t h May, the Greater Glasgow P.T.E. had introduced three bus routes f o r the duration of the Underground Modernisation works.
